Gameroom design: Black ceiling - good idea??
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:18:24 pm »
I'd like to ask if anyone has any "before / after experience" with painting the ceiling black? Does this reduce reflections on the monitor or isn't it even noticeable?

Thanks for any input.

I would assume so. Lot's of restaurants and bars go with painting the ceiling area black, so I don't see why it wouldn't work out. But I guess it depends on the room.  *pics!*
NO MORE!!

As it seems to me that most commercial locations have black ceilings is the reason why I am asking. However, my ceiling is only about 2.5 metres high - perhaps even less - and it is a typical room. If pics help, here ya go (some of the pics are from when I just moved in last year but you'll get an idea of the room - at least I hope so ;) )

But actually I was more asking for the experiences people made who already went through switching their ceiling from white to black ;)

If it's a dedicated gameroom, black would certainly work, and I'd expect it to drop the glare and reflections quite a bit.

But getting it a consistent deep black (and them putting it back to white when you move) is going to be one +bear+ of a project. It'll likely take 3-4 coats for good coverage.

It'll also make the room feel MUCH smaller. If it's a decent sized room already, probably not a big deal, but if it's small now, it'll feel like a coffin with the ceiling black.

That said, some friend of mine painted their +living room+ ceiling black and it worked amazing well. But their house was an older home with 11' ceilings and a wall of windows on both ends.

Just a few things to consider.

Okay, sorry about the pics - they are the only ones I got atm. Anyway, I just measured to be exact and the height is indeed 2 metres 50 centimetres which converts to 8 ft 2 inches (twelve inch per foot, correct? ;) )

The ceiling is not that high so it really might shrink down the room. An alternative to painting the whole thing might be using flat panels of some sort. However - ain't there anybody out there who already made this experience by himself with a room of similar height?

instead of paint...you could use a black fabric to cover the ceiling...

that'd be super easy to return to white if needed...and it'd reflect light less than paint...!

Add some quilted tufts to that and you'd have you very own padded room  ;)

But seriously, that's not a bad idea, get some black or dark colored furniture nails ( for nailing down leather on upholstered chairs) and it could look pretty decent (and be really easy to take down).

A black ceiling will not reduce glare on monitors if the lighting is still ceiling mounted and pointed down. It would only reduce glare of any kind if you had floor lamps which are pointing at the the ceiling. (i.e. reflecting off the ceiling)
So you have to consider the lighting itself and color simultaneously.

Not a technician . . . . just a DIY'er.

but a black ceiling will reduce any light which gets reflected off the ceiling...

like ambient light that gets aimed at the ceiling from monitors/sunlight/any light fixtures in the room...
