Stargate restoration project.
« on: November 14, 2009, 08:01:43 pm »
I just picked up a Stargate in fair condition. It powers up....for a bit. I will post picts soon. I just took a few basic ones when I got to the shop. Some one decided to put vinyl over the CPO. Should be interesting taking it apart.  Some rocket scientist decided to use the biggest sheet metal screw ever made to hold the back door on. Split the door stop of course. I will be repainting, fixing the wiring, swapping the RAM, and sorry to say to you hard core guys, but I'm ditching the linear PS for a switcher. So much less heat in the cab. Haven't checked for burn in yet, may have to swap the monitor. It has some minor water damage that should be easy to fix, and why do none of the cabs I buy have feet?!?! Are they like socks in the dryer? Is there some great arcade game food graveyard/black hole that sucks them all up? It obviously had some RAM problems at some point. One of the chips is new
I will post more picts as i start to take it apart.

Does anyone have the AI file for the side stencils? I know I have seen it somewhere but don't remember the site.

Thanks,
Mike

I haven't seen vector files for the stencils, but Zorg has stuff from localarcade mirrored:

The artwork on your cab looks pretty good, so you might not need stencils, but it you do, pr0k has 'em for sale:

If you aren't a hardcore purist and/or don't want to fight with Williams boardsets (I lost patience for those a while back), you might consider jrok's SYSFGPA board:

And, yeah, feet seem to vanish and I don't know why.

Thanks very much for the links. I am a glutton for punishment with Williams boards it seems. I just finished the board restoration on a Joust (picts later i promise) that included .... well everything. New sockets, new 4164 RAM, new video decoder chips, all board and harness connectors, re-cap, bla bla bla. The only thing i didn't fix was the linear PS. I like switchers. Less heat. But I must say the thing runs perfectly and should be good for another 20 years before the caps dry out again. I am not going to that much trouble with this cab. I don't plan on keeping it, so I will get it working reliably and sell it off.
I will have to look into the alternate boards for the Williams games though. I glanced at the site and it looks very cool.
Thanks again,
Mike

It was my Joust that pushed me over the edge -- I had a sound problem that I just couldn't fix. I finally concluded that it was possessed. It previously had some problems with displaying red and the former owner couldn't for the life of him figure out why (and he's Mike Ranger, who designed one of the first MW boards ... he, and others, tested every single trace and chip to no avail).

8 months later, jrok came out with his boards and I put one in a Robotron cab for a Williams Multi and the other, along with a new harness, in my Joust. Zero problems since and the gameplay is spot on (the only thing emulated is the sound, although you can use a Williams soundboard with it).
