NOS (New Old Stock) Sideart vs. Reproduction?
« on: February 16, 2008, 08:25:26 pm »
I'm looking at purchasing some NOS sideart and a CPO.  Is there anything I should worry about with this?  My first thought is how good is the 25 year old adhesive going to be?  NOS is great because it is the real deal, colorwise and everything.

How much is a set of side art (2 pieces) and a CPO for Donkey Kong worth in near mint condition??

I'm restoring a Donkey Kong machine but it doesn't have to be museum quality because I know it's going to be used and played.  I don't want to be so anal about getting scratches on stuff, but I want it to look NICE if I'm going to restore it to it's full glory.

I'm up against an asking price of $150 shipped for the mentioned pieces.  Deal or no deal??

Thanks!

It's kind of difficult to verify NOS Sideart/CPO with DK because there are such good and accurate repros. Having said that, I'd go with "verified" NOS everytime. I've not had an issue with the adhesive from an NOS - yet. Fingers crossed.

The 150.00 does seem high for that set. I would think 100.00 - 120.00 tops, would be what I'd fork over.

I have a spare verified NOS DK Instruction Sticker laying around. Let me know - if you're that hardcore about NOS, otherwise the repro instr. sticker is just as good and would be cheaper.

When verifying the NOS CPO, if it has a Instruction Card in it. The last couple lines should be "red" lettering, not "white". Most repros have the white.

Well I'm definitely not that hardcore about NOS.  I really just want a nice looking and correctly playing donkey kong machine.  I would just buy one if it were the right price and local, but so far since January I have only found the DK3 machine.  A restore would be cool, but I keep looking for a DK machine because I could keep this DK3 as is and it's very nice.  I keep thinking it's a lot to replace just about everything, and I've actually gotten to enjoy playing DK3 - Not nearly as much as DK but it's pretty cool in it's own right.

Now that I've done a little looking at prices, 2 pieces of reproduction side art and a CPO shipped should definitely be less than $70.  Is it worth that much more for the NOS?  I'm not trying to build a museum piece so probably not.  I want to be able to play it without worrying too much about scratching some mint NOS CPO and sideart.

Thanks for the tips WunderCade.  I've been learning a lot about just Donkey Kong, and I don't think I'm really even close to being done with all there is to know about one game.  I salute all of you who really know your stuff on a plethora of old school classics.

DK - I am looking for the same parts (plus others like bezel and marque).  If you wouldn't mind, let me know who you get the parts from and how you like them.

I know mikesarcade sells most of these pieces, and there are a few Ebay sellers that sell them as well, but I have not really heard anything about these people/companies.

I really should take notes on the things I read because I've heard about the various quality of the side art from different online vendors, but I don't remember now.  It could have been in the Neilyboy DK Restoration thread...  not sure.

Oh, here's some:

I ordered the Nintendo stickers from Rikitiki. Should be here tomarrow. You got a control panel and stuff? I got my CP overlay, card and cab instructions from Twisted quarter. The cp card looks like it was just printed on a bubble jet printer. Not too happy about that one, but the sticker on the cab and the CP overlay itself looks awesome, and he had the best prices around. I might go to Kinkos to reprint the CP card.

Nostalgia, yeah I ordered my cp used off ebay (At first wanting to keep everything as original as possible) I was able to get a 'Nice' used cp and marquee for half the price of buying just a repro marquee off ebay. The instruction card is a bit different on a repro than the original. I was just going to scan my original at like 600dpi and touch it up in pshop then reprint on some heavy stock on a color laser-jet here at work. When it comes to me ordering side-art for my cab I have heard to buy from quarter arcade so I will probably spend the extra 3 bucks a side and get it from them.. My instruction sticker which I ordered from Mikes arcade came (the sticker that goes above the control panel centered to the joystick  below the bezel) and it has a huge bubble in the laminate overlay between the top layer and the printed layer. So im not sure what im going to do about that. I hate to think that I paid 12 bucks for the put your quarters in below sticker since its the only sticker out of the set that I will be using.. Quality control must have been asleep when they packaged my order up haha.. Oh well.. Well I may get some free time this weekend to mount the pcb into the cab and work on re-mounting the power supply. I like to take my time and get of the the house. Just being in the garage is relaxing so usually something as simple as re-mounting the original power supply can take me some time since I will take it apart piece by piece and clean it lol.. More updates as they come.

Neil

That should help a little!

Well I guess I might as well build a museum piece now.

I'm getting the 2 pieces of NOS sideart, 1 NOS CPO, 1 nintendo joystick in good shape, 3 new nintendo buttons, for $160 shipped.

I have a spare verified NOS DK Instruction Sticker laying around. Let me know - if you're that hardcore about NOS, otherwise the repro instr. sticker is just as good and would be cheaper.
