TECH: anyone in MA repair LCD TV's
« on: October 12, 2006, 09:37:50 am »
off topic sort of but I'm taking the day off to get this taken care of...figured i'd post to see if any of the techs here may be familiar with this...you never know til you ask.  ;D

Westinghouse 27"LCD  32701   (just weeks out of warranty of course)

no video on any of the inputs...only flashes when first turned on then goes black.
no video for menu mode or when changing inputs (it should say the mode you are switching to).
After disconnecting all Inputs except the PC I was able to get video(in PC mode) long enough to put it in menu mode and search to see if there was a sleep mode setting...Only for it to go totally black on me again with the same results again....no video

on that note....anyone in MA/RI repair LCD tv's?

This type of monitor is specialized repair so it needs to go to a tv repair shop. Get out the wallet!

The Wallet is out. I may just buy a new one as i need something soon. This is our only TV and i am having no luck finding someon to look at it. The kids will be driving me crazy by the weekend.

I think i narrowed it down to a power inverter based on what info i have gathered so far. just not willing to open her up myself.

Because these kind of monitors have so much surface mounted components it's a specialized repair that generally only the larger tv repair shops can work on. Remember that most consumer electronics made today are meant to be thrown away as the cost of repair exceeds the price of a new device.

Just by various sights i have gone to regarding LCD repair, it seems the backlight is the area to focus on. I was brought to the sight linked below searching for info. what linked me there basically described my problem word for word.

I think i may buy another LCD for temp use in the living room while i try to fix this. "If" i ever fix it i wil move the new one to my bedroom...so it may work our better in the end.

The problem i will definitely have is getting the parts...anyone with sources???

without a doubt Ken, i agree. HOWEVER, I have saved THOUSANDS(and made thousands) of dollars by taking something a company (or resident)has thrown away because of a small flaw. I need to rule out it isn't something small before i give up.
I did get a quote for a mainboard of 500. with the local repair shops markup i am sure.

side note: picked up 5 brand new dehumidifiers that a local company threw away because they made a noise. Opened them to find the bottom mounting screw in each fan was either not installed or fell out since i found one nut in the bottom of one of them.
It's cheaper for them to throw it away then to return it to the manufacturer. It cost me about .25 and an hours time for 5 new dehumidifiers.
not the same as an LCD TV but the fact it was just something as stupid as that makes me not want to give up

on most lcd screens (computer monitors & tv's) the inverter board for the backlight is seperate to the main board. the fault you are describing sounds like the fault I had with the monitor I am sat in front of, where one of 4 inverters on the same board (4 tubes = 4 inverters) had died, this left the inverter board in a position where it would fire up (often for less than 1/2 second) and then detect the overload due to the dead inverter and shut down again.

My solution was to remove the drive transistors on the faulty inverter, end result is the bottom 2 inches of my screen is maybe 5% darker than the rest, doesnt bother me and nobody else seems to notice it.
