Mamewah, analog slider - Ikari warriors
« on: October 02, 2005, 07:35:14 pm »
I've searched out this topic and found the general response that mamewah's analog support is still under development and is imperfect.

I'm trying to use a Logitech Wingman Extreme joystick to play Ikari warriors.  I'm contemplating this joystick for a CP on my mamecab to be.  The problem I'm having is I can't tone down the sensitvity, or saturation or whatever of the analog axis.  Mamewah also totally ignores the wingman software which allows you to map keystrokes to buttons/axis.

I've been trying to use the slider to control the spin of the characters in Ikari.  The character spins way too fast regardless of adjusting the default.ini controller file, regardless of analog settings in game.  If the wingman profiler software was effectively used my mamwah, I could limit the axis settings in there.

Just wondering if anyone has found a valid solution.  I'd like to have this joystick working since it's similar to the discs of tron joy.

Could you go back and describe what you have done?

You are saying you have a problem in game with Ikari Warriors so your problem is configuring MAME, not MAMEWAH.  This is usually a misnomer, but after reading what you wrote I'm not sure if you are actually configuring MAME or MAMEWAH.

Couple more things:
1. Ikari Warriors is a little hard to configure as it is, other rotary games respond better then Ikari.  You'll be able to get it better, but may not be able to get it perfect.
2. Have you tried changing the analog settings in MAME using the Tab Menu? (Don't press Pause when you go into this menu)

I agree, this is a MAME configuration issue...the Tab menu will help here.  Also, enable joysticks in \mame\mame.ini.

Does this mean that all of the joystick configuration information for mamewah is only used in the front end?

Does this mean that all of the joystick configuration information for mamewah is only used in the front end?  just for the games list? and then when  you start a game it uses mame's setup?

Yes.

So after looking at my mame directory I find that the mame.ini file only specifies the directory ctrlr.  How do I know which controller.cfg file mame uses by default?  There was some documentation that said it used ctrlr.cfg, but I don't find one.  The next problem is going to be that I'm a programming retard.  I can write a choose your own adventure  story in basic on the c64 and that's about it, and it was when I was 10.  I am  going have a very hard time writing an xml file to work with my wingman extreme.  I don't suppose that there's a way to use other existing xml files and change them to work?  Or someone else in the world has a cfg file written for a wingman.

Just take say the 'hotrodse' example ctrlr file, and modify it.  If you can't be bothered just use the Tab menu as I suggested before.

The reason I'm so convinced that I'm going to need to write one is because the tab menu didn't help.

You didn't look in the right place then...look in 'Input (general)'.  You can achieve exactly the same as you can with ctrlr files just with this menu.

I'll take another look but doesn't the input general just configure key mappings?

I messed around in the analog controls section with sensitivity and digital speed.  I'll take a better look at the input general area.

I think it's like someone else said, Ikari Warriors is just hard to configure.  I guess I have to wait until I have a 12 position rotary and my cab is built.

No, all mappings.  You might have to enable joystick (in \mame\mame.ini) to configure your joystick before going into the Tab menu tho.

That's right, once mapped this stuff will adjust it.

Funnily enough though, MAME's Ikari support is expecting an optical-analog input (ie mouse), rather than a digital signal as per the original game (& likewise Druin's interface).  So even with a mechanical rotary joystick Ikari will not play arcade perfect, unfortunately.

That said, AnalogMAME's support might be better (I'm not sure) or as a last resort you could probably edit MAME's source...not sure if anyone has done this before (?)
