Broken monitor/ how bad is it?
« on: December 31, 2004, 11:43:29 am »
Well, as luck was having it I finally had the rest of the guts put together on my cab and was about to put the monitor back in for what was supposed to be the last time, when I started hearing escaping gas.  Apparently I had accidentally bent over the connector to the neck and gas was escaping.  I waited for the leaking noise to stop and pulled out the connector.  All the pins seemed fine, but slightly bent over, so I straightened them out, reconnected the connector and tried applying power, all that happened was there was a bright arching, down by the neck board that I couldn't pinpoint real well.  So is the whole thing a goner, is the tube spent, how bad is it?

On a second note, I'm apparently doing something really wrong when taking out and putting these monitors in, because I also cracked the neck board on my old,non functioning monitor when I pulled that out.  Is there any tricks to not knocking the back of the neck with your chest as you are hoisting a monitor in and out of a standing cab?
(besides the obvious one of not knocking the back against  your chest as you hoist it up)

Thanks for the help
John

Yup, you vented your tube.  The hissing sound isn't gas escaping, it's the air going into the tube.

You *must* be very careful with the neck.  It's VERY delicate (as you've found out).  I can't give you any advice, other than DON'T JAR IT IN ANY WAY.

One thing you can do is easily fabricate some handles for the front of monitor.I bought 2 simple metal handles screwed them into pieces of scrap wood and than bolted them to the frame.

Always have a helper to install or remove a monitor. NEVER EVER carry or move a monitor with the neck facing or against you. You are supposed to carry a monitor with the face (front) against your chest.

Thanks for the input all,

I'm almost sure the tube from the old monitor will not work with the rest of the new one since the old one was a 19k4961 (a WG made back in May of 1982) and the new one is the 19" 9100 (basically a WG computer monitor) so I'm guessing that  even if the neck was the same size on each, I think this replacement would well be beyond my skills. Besides I never did find out what went out on the old one, it could have been the tube, all I know was that I went to turn it on one day and it didn't work, my troubleshooting hit its limits after I traced the power to the chaise and the signal to the chaise.  But if someone could confirm that the two would/wouldn't work together I sure would appreciate it.

Thanks for the suggestions on taking out and putting in the monitor, but I think the issue is my cab itself. My cab is an old Dragon's Lair and doesn't have a monitor shelf, instead you slide the monitor on to rails from above and behind (so as far as I can tell you have to point the neck towards your  self as you lift it up to start sliding it down the rails). My inexperience with typical cabs was showing since I thought you had to put all monitors in from the back of the cab, but as I look at pictures around here of cabs with monitor shelves, it is pretty clear that you can insert these from the front of the cab.

Hope everyone had a good New Year's Eve,
John
