Monitor for gutted Centipede (atari) cab
« on: January 04, 2004, 02:02:07 am »
I'm likely getting an old gutted centipede cab, these originally came with a 19" vertical monitor.  Does anyone know if I will be able to fit a WG9200 or another 25" monitor in a horizontal position?  I have a feeling it is going to be millimeters to narrow for the monitor.  I've yet to get the cab so I can't measure it directly yet.  I see that the WG9200 is 24.390" wide (according to this

Any suggestions?  Anyone with a centipede or atari cab put in a large horizontal monitor?  Only thing I could find is this project where he crammed in a 24" TV.

Actually those games came with a horizontal monitor that was vertically mounted in the cabinet. The Centipede cabinet was designed for 19" monitors. I would not put a 25" in it.

Yeah that's what I meant by vertical (vertical mount).  Anyways I want a horizontal mount since most of the games I play are that way.

Here is an original centipede monitor layout (not mine):

there is tons of space on either side of the original vertical monitor, so if I did put in a 19" monitor and mounted it horizontally it would look something like this photoshop hack:

I'm just wondering if a 25" would physically fit into the cab since there is tons of empty space on either side of the 19" horizontal monitor.  I would of course have to just use smoked plexi for the glass (my cab doesn't have the orig centipede glass so that is alright anyways).

So anyone know the exact inside demensions of a centipede cab and just how big of a monitor I could fit in there?

Another photoshop, it looks tight and I know its not quite accurate, but I took the 19" monitor graphic and resized it by 142% which is about right for the difference of a 19" vs 27" I think.

For exact cab dimensions for the centipede cab, check out www.jakobud.com.  He has set up quite the resource for original cab drawings/dimensions.  The inside width is actually 23.75 inches.

I just bought a gutted centipede cab and the width turned out to be very importnant because I'm putting in a 21" PC monitor and rotating it.  I am still convinved that it will work (so very close to not fitting even with the case off), but I haven't started construction.  Mind you with a rotating monitor, I will need a little more width anyways.

You may want to check out the depth too.  On the cab, the monitor is mounted 3-4 inches away from the glass.  On my cab, I am going to have to bring the monitor right up to the glass.  But, this may also be a result of the rotating monitor.

Best of luck.

Sweet, looks like it may fit after all, perhaps a WG9200 is in my future :)

If that's the moitor width and the cabinet's inside width is only 23.75", then how do you figure it will work?  I think I'm confused.   ???

Don't forget that the plywood that the 19" monitor mounts to is also the main side-to-side cabinet bracing. I've flipped some Centipede, Kangaroo, and Dig Dug monitors to horizontal and I always cut a fresh piece of plywood (with new t-nuts) to make a nice clean installation of it. Remember also that a 25" picture tube neck sticks out much farther than a 19" one does and include the neckboard too. You might find that the cabinet back door can't be put on with a 25" tube there or you'll bust the neck or neckboard off!

I've got a Space Dual Cabinet, which is almost an identical body style to the Centipede, It also has 23.75" interior width. I was considering puting in my 25" monitor, and I did a few measurements to see if it would fit.
I've got a 25" Hantarex std res monitor that I measured.

It will fit, however, there are two internal supports that are used for the existing monitor shelf that would have to be moved. It was a very tight fit with less that .25 " on each side.

Hope this helps
