other emu on cab?
« on: December 24, 2013, 09:49:54 am »
trying to find out what you guys do? I've done both on my cab and not really sure how I feel about it. I do have an ouya that I run emulators from and dreamcast with vga on my tv... so other emulators aren't a priority. I'm leaning toward just mame because it'll be cleaner, easier to navigate, and keeps console on tv and arcade on arcade which is where they were each meant to be played... but the idea of having an arcade with all those systems is also bouncing around in my brain... it'll be my third mame cab (sold others when i moved) so i dunno what to do. thoughts?

personally I'd put UME (MAME with all the MESS content unlocked) on and primarily run MAME / arcade titles, but also add a couple of the things that work well for a cab from the MESS side on there too, ones already suited to arcade controls (shooters, platformers, puzzle games, fighters etc.)

that way you're not faffing around configuring multiple emulators, you have a familiar environment set up already just with a bit of bonus content too, most of which will blend seamlessly with the traditional 80s / 90s arcade games in terms of style and player expectations.

that's not going to give you Dreamcast, but Dreamcast alongside what MAME emulates is going to look out of place anyway IMHO.  Keep in mind that cartridge based systems tend to work better than CD / Tape based ones for an arcade cabinet because you tend to be able to jump into the action more quickly without load times from the original games.

does mess support atari 2600, nes, snes, master system, genesis, turbografx-16? they would be the classics i'd be interested in running on it... i'm good on psone ps2 saturn dc and n64 , i know they won't run on a cab right due to controls...

it does a decent enough job for those systems, although TG16/PCE system requirements are a bit high these days, and some of the SNES add-on chips don't work well.

but in terms of bolstering what you can run on the cab without having to leave a familiar MAME-like environment it's certainly something you should consider.

you can also run things like Intellivison with 'Diner' (a sort of sequel to Burger Time) or 'Killer Bees' for the Philips Videopac Plus G7400 or 'Miner 2049er' for the Super Cassette Vision etc. all of which fit neatly alongside older arcade games.

ume g7400 bees
ume intv diner
ume scv mine2049

from the command-line are as easily automated with a frontend as

ume pacman

well obviously you'll want a .152 romset if you want to take advantage of some of the new additions and working things in 0.152
games like 'The Gladiator' are worth your time if you like beat' em ups..

otherwise right, UME just uses MAME and MESS roms + software list files (it's the same code, just in a single emulator) and those can be found in a variety of places.

is there a .151 to .152 update I can grab somewhere? My old mame version was .142 and it took forever to get and I just got 151. lol i feel so out of the loop, it's been too long.

i figured as much.

can you tell me if any games were changed in .152 from .151? or was it just additions?

there have been both additions and changes since 0.151, it's almost 2 months of progress after all, it's rare the project is ever standing completely still.
