Capcom CPS-2 video issue on Neotec S501 Monitor
« on: August 31, 2011, 03:43:05 am »
I have an interesting problem, and i'm not sure where to start:

My Monitor: NeoTec S-501 (It says NEO-24S501 on a sticker)
I havent been able to find anything regarding this monitor other than a post by some guy who replaced the caps on one once. It's a real generic it would seem, but it's what i have, and it came stock with the cabinet. I dont have any specs, manuals, diagrams. Nothing. The cabinet vendor says it's a S-501, and the sticker says NEO-24S501. That's all i have.

Working Jamma Boards:
Neo Geo MVS
Neo Geo King of Fighters 2003 pcb
Custom 100-in-1 jamma pcb

Non-Working Jamma Boards:
Capcom Street Fighter Alpha 2 CPS2
18-in-1 CPS2

I have a cps2 with street fighter alpha 2, and  an 18-in-1 cps2, and neither of them work properly on my monitor. I get garbled video, its distorted, and wavy. I've obviously tried all relevant manual adjustments, vhold, etc. As stated above, I have a few other boards that work just fine on this monitor, and i know that these cps2 units are working properly as well.

I did some digging, well, mostly brainstorming actually.  And i figure that it could be one of two things:

1) It's a resolution incompatibility problem... the monitor just doesnt handle the res the cps2 puts out? (What is the standard res used for the CPS2, and how does that compare to the neo geo res?)

2) It's a sync issue? (This is simply a shot in the dark, as it seems to be a common topic among  people with 'garbled video'.) If it is a sync issue, i have no idea what to do about it.

If anyone can offer some thoughts, feedback, info, i'd really appreciate it. Just not sure where to head from here.
Ive built a really nice setup, and planned from the ground up to have a couple of cps2 boards in this thing. It's part of the original design! I'd hate to be thwarted after i've come so far!

I have both CPS2 and MVS systems at home, and they both work on the same monitor, with no adjustments.

To be honest, I'm not sure...  It's a Capcom Impress cab...

According to CPS-2 Shock (http://cps2shock.emu-france.info/techinfo.html),
the output resolution of the cps2 is 384 x 224.

Wikipedia had this tidbit of info on the Neo Geo resolution: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neo_Geo_MVS#Display)
"Display resolution: 320×224 (many games only used the centermost 304 pixels)" and
"A/V output: RF, composite video, RGB (with separate 21 pin RGB cable FCG-9)"

Since I have no documentation on this monitor, i have no idea what resolutions it supports. I can assume that 320x224 is supported, because i have no major issues with the neo geo boards. (There is a slight bend to the right at the top of the screen, but it's very minor.) and the stock pcb that came with the cab and monitor work 100%. But i'm not certain what res that board outputs.

How can I poke and prod to find out what resolutions are supported? Is there a way to test it? (Safely.)

Just for giggles, test your +5V output on your power supply. I've seen wonky stuff happen with CPS-1 and CPS-2 if its not getting 5.0 volts.

check your video ground on pin 14,many games work fine with just normal ground but some need that pin 14 connected to the video ground input of the signal plug
