Help with Area51 .chd
« on: July 06, 2003, 10:15:17 pm »
I've read the FAQ which says where to put the .chd file for Area51, but I'm in the middle of downloading what looks like RAR compressed files. "Area51.r00", "Arear51.r01", etc.

How do I combine these files into what I'm assuming is a single .chd file for the game?

Thanks!

Try 'WinRAR.'

And please remove that link.

The ones from ****.dk use Winzip 8.1 to unspan the image.

What spped on PC would a person need to run Area 51? Would it be comparable to KI or would it be more/less?

I've got a 1GHz Athlon, and it's 'playable' although choppy.  I'm sure some more power and it would be fine.

Runs 60/60 frames on my P4 2.00 GHZ.

If you want to play it on a PIII 800; turn off sound and you will get a really playable framerate.

I configed MAMEWAH so that if I run a game with my A button it runs with no sound. I did this w/ the run game w/ extra options feature and I made the option "-nosound" and changed the run game w/ extra options 1 button to a  :) It is really nice.

PS cut scenes in Area 51 tend to be choppier than gameplay. W/ no sound on a P3 450 it is playable, but the cutscenes are bad!

I don't like to turn off sound completely, but uusually when I find a problem game I turn the sample rate down the 1/4 of normal. That usually does a pretty good job. Even specifying a very low frame skip works well, too because it seems to remove the overhead of estimating a frame skip in mid-game.
