Ever use FASTMame?
« on: June 16, 2003, 01:03:42 pm »
Just read about FastMame http://www.geoshock.com.  Anyone ever use this?   How is it?  Right now I have a P3 500mhz that plays some games slow and was thinking this might be a good idea.

:) Rotate or die! :)

I have used FastMAME - it seems to give a good speed increase on some games (try STUN Runner).  Definately quicker than the standard build, but I don't use it permanently since I cannot build my own (I believe the speed increase is given by the compiler that I don't own).

This was all that I was using, but couldn't seem to find FastMAME 0.68 or later when the other MAMEs came out.  If it's there now, maybe I'll give the new version a try.  I did notice a bit of a speed increase on my K6-3 450.

Keep in mind some of the NeoGeo games (Metal Slug included) slow down on real hardware.  Not sure is this is the case here (what FPS are you getting?), but if so, you can use an overclocking cheat to get around it...

I tested FastMame out quickly last night on my PIII 500mhz with Shuffle Shot and Terminator 2.  Shuffle Shot went from 30 FPS to 42 FPS.  T2 went from 40 FPS to 45 FPS.  My main PC at home is a PIII 900 mhz which plays both games at 60FPS... It might be time for a new PC for the Mame cab!

How does the overclocking cheat work/get setup?

REBIRTH: sounds like you might have put your 'main' PC in your cab!

I don't think the overclocking cheat will help in this case.  This only applies when you are running eg Metal Slug at full speed (60FPS).  You will notice at times some slowdown when loads of stuff is happening / massive sprites blowing up etc.  This slowdown would have happened on the real NeoGeo machine, so is emulated correctly.

To 'overclock' the emulated NeoGeo hardware, I believe you can use cheat.dat and activate the cheat from within the MAME GUI.  From my understanding you have to do this each time you play the game tho.

To be honest, I have never done it so I am not 100% sure how it is done.  It might be worth having a browse throught the 'EmuAdvise / Help' message board at MAMEWorld - I have seen this topic mentioned a good few times before.  If you can't find it, ask and one of the regulars will no doubt help you out :)

Just to confirm, this will not help the speed of the games if they are not already running at full speed  In fact, it could make it worse.

anyone tried it with Killer Instict 1 or 2? KI1 runs fine for me but KI2 runs incredible slow and my computer
im using for MAME/Emu's is:
AMD Athlon 1.333ghz
128meg Geforce 3 Ti200 [i think this isnt needed but it was in the system]
512megs RAM

I Thought it would have been over kill for anything but i guess now.
oh well it was my old desktop and i'v never touched it at all since i got
my Inspiron 8200 Notebook, now thats my Main Computer so not a loss
or anything i was just surprised at how slow it was.
