sound crackles with dragons lair,ki1&2,mk's why?
« on: May 14, 2003, 03:10:55 pm »
I'm really frustrated with the sound crackling it gets very annoying. I was just curious i'm running this as my system

amd 2500+
500 ram
7500 radeon
windows xp

and when i run any mk2 and up plus all killer instinct games and dragons lair i get crackling madness! Is my system not fast enough? is there something i can do to help this. i checked to see if things are running in the background by hitting crtl+alt+del nothing shows?

any tips would be great thanks!

What are the settings you are using?  Monitor, Arcade monitor, TV?  Can you check the fps (press F11 while playing the game) and report back with the results especially when there's heavy crackling.  What's producing the sound - soundcard or onboard?

Have you tried changing settings within mame - lower the sound sample rate? disable some features such as triplebuffer?

Bit more info and we might be able to help you out, although some of those games do require some very serious cpu power and will always crackle or stutter on today's systems.

Good luck

You might want to mention which soundcard you are using... it's an onboard one, huh?

That can make a difference (on top of being more of an issue with cpu hungry games)

do you have the latest/best drivers for your hardware?

Most (not all) onboard soundcards are cheap, cheezy, and low quality... they often suffer from crappy drivers too.  They often employ designs that steal CPU cycles to process sound (which in this application is giving you fits but for normal usage probably is fine)....

*shrug* you can't go wrong with a decent SBlive card (do they still make sblive values?  if you are going cheap)  I'd just ignore all the stupid SBlive addon software and such. but i'm rambling.

You could also spend some time tweaking your setup to try and get your existing sound to work correctly.  Lowering bit rate in mame.ini to 22500... mono ... and increasing the buffer can all help and maybe alleviate the issue somewhat.

good luck!

I was using an older build of emu64 that had sound disabled so i never experienced this problem before. Today I down loaded a newer version, though, and I got those popping sound issues.

I'm tempted to believe it is my onboard sound. (Nothing a $30 sound card can't fix, though I didn't want to spend the money.) Of course, it may be the emulalor as well.

Since KI & KI2 play on more than 1 emulator now I think it's important for people to mention which one they are actually using...

Side note... I lost my image oh KI2... anybody know where to find it again? :-\ (without ordering a full set of CD's)

I've got broadband so I don't mind downloading. Maybe if someone has it here they can send me a private message? Maybe we can make some trades or something.

I was looking into the matter further...

I installed a Sound Blaster PCI and had the same problems.

I went into the options in KI and noticed the sound ROMs didn't register properly. There may be some issue with the ROM dump. I got a pretty standard dump so I don't know what the problem might be.

I was able to minimize the problem, though, when I made sure my  regular screen resolution matched my full screen in-game resolution.

Don't know if any of this will help. Good luck!
