Best input to use on Multi-input monitor?
« on: November 01, 2004, 06:46:02 am »
Hi,

I've got a Hantarex 28" monitor that has seperate inputs for different signals.

It has:

compostite video in, and S-video in (Pal/Secam/NTSC) displayed at 100Hz.

15pin VGA input (31-38Khz Horizontal) - 640x480/800x600 and 1024x768interlaced

9pin RGB/YUV input

Originally when I picked the monitor up I was pleased to see 15Khz-38KHz specs - as I thought I had a multisync monitor like the NEC's... However, unlike the NEC it looks like the range is achieved over different inputs - ie 15khz is only in through the svideo/compostie etc....

The VGA and S-video look fine, but I've been unable to get a picture out of the RGB inputs - I want to find out what range of signals it can take, I was hoping up to vga but it looks very unlikely.

The specs for the RGB input are:
Vi RGB = 0.7 Vpp Positive o negative synchronism 0.7- 5 Vpp, synch on green.
 Vi YUV = 1 Vpp

Questions:

1) I would like to hear suggestons of the easiest way to get a picture in the RGB input - I presume I cant just hack a VGA cable as the syncs will be out of range..?

2) Is the above worth it? Anyone with experience in quality? should I just use a tv-out and the s-video or use the VGA directly. This would have the advantage of allowing easy pc -use.

3) Whats the best way of limiting and fixing windows output frequencies (i.e. at 800x600 I'm limited to around 60HZ) - but XP seems to sometimes re-identlify the monitor as generic/standard and reset frequecies allowing over and above what the monitor can handle. I'm using a radeon 9700.

4) Any way of turning off XP's "640x480 is too low....  Shall I change it?" pop-up

Cheers for any info.

Ok well not much joy here, so maybe if I ask something more basic:

Whats the easiest way to send a 15Khz signal from my pc - without buying an arcade VGA?

What are the volatages outputted by VGA cards?

Please post the actual model number of your monitor, (And a link to the manual if you have it.)
Then most of your questions can be answered.

Use powerstrip (www.entechtaiwan.com) for windows + directx games and advancemame for emulation.

1V which should be fine for your monitor but for some older monitors an amplifier (e.g. from www.ultimarc.com) is needed

@dabone

The model number is CT28 /IDTV3.

I don't have the exact manual,  but it is basically an older version of the CT29 /IDTV3.  The manual for that is:

@wpcmamer

Thanks will try - can powerstrip make my gfx card output 15khz signals directly? I thought they could not, hence the need for ArcadeVGA.

From that spec sheet, your computer doesn't need powerstrip for windows.
(Apparently that one supports 640x480 and 800x600)

Some monitors like that require the use of the non db15 hd inputs for 15k,
but I'd try a copy of advmame and see if you can get 15K on the regular pc connector.

It looks alot like the Vision Pro SVGA monitor specs, except it also takes svideo and Component inputs.

If you have a full manual some monitors allow 15K input on the DB9 input (It defaults to Digital (16 colors only). Sometime there is a switch to enable analog on this input.

Later,

Aha thanks. For some reason I only thought of experimenting on the RGB 9-pin input. Did not think to try on the 15pin VGA input.

640x480/800x600 work fine. I will try out advancemame assuming it can force my radeon to output 15Khz

Thanks.
