Visual Pinball Help...
« on: September 16, 2004, 10:06:08 am »
I'm failrly new to Visual Pinball, and am having a strange issue.  I was successful in playing VP in the recent past.  IE. when you hit ESC and Quit the program returns you to the Pinball Editor.

Now when I hit ESC and Quit the program crashes...  (Windows reports an error occured and will close.  Do you want to report the error to MS.....)

One thing that changed is I installed Service Pack 2 for Windows XP Pro....  Has anyone else seen this error?  If so how do you fix it?

Thanks,

Terryd

yes this is a known issue.

fe's that close visual pinball themselves like 3darcade are not affected.

also howards wrapper is not affected so also mamewah and dk users wont notice this whne they use the wrapper

Sorry what is a wrapper?  I'm kind of new to this and am not familiar with this term...  How does a wrapper mask this issue?

look at howards site:

www.oscarcontrols.com/lazarus/

the vp wrapper hides the launching of visual pinball and wait then for a certain key to be pressed. when this key is pressed it closes vp without going back to the editor. gives a nicer experience to the user and now also bypasses that sp2 issue :-)

Can someone explain how to setup and run a wrapper in mamewah 1.5?  I've never used one, but it sounds worthy.

Thanks!

Yes, but the setup is different in Mamewah 1.5  ???.  I have attached my ini file.  I must have something typed wrong.  Also, when I try changing items like list_generation_method and show_dos_box, they don't save.  After launching and closing MW, the ini file goes back to the auto settings.

What am I missing?

Thanks for the help!

I think I've noticed a couple of things wrong in your .ini file.  However, I'm no expert.  I did get Mamewah running with VP a few days ago, and it seems to work fine.

1. You have VP launch in the Visual Pinball tables directory, but your rom path points to the VPinMame directory.  I think these should be the same directory, i.e. put VP-launch in the VPinMame\tables directory, and set both above mentioned paths to that directory.

2.  I think you should have your list gen. method set to rom_folder, unless you have an xml file for it to cross-reference.  If I'm wrong on this, someone please correct me.

3.  Also, for whatever reason, I have long filenames set to 1.  I can't remember if I did this or not.

And 4th, I'm using the newest VP-launch, but I've no clue as to whether or not that would make a difference.

I've attached a copy of my .ini file for you to look at.  Like I said, it works for me.
Oh, one thing though, I have no folder set for screenshots, so when it goes to screensaver mode, it crashes.   Just something I haven't fixed in my .ini yet.

Hope this helps.

It shouldn't make any difference.... the wrappers are meant to be seamless.... you just pretend it is visualpinball.exe.  As you said, the only oddity is in the case of the vp wrapper specifically, it needs to be placed in the tables directory.  This is just simplier and eliminates a lot of possible error (i.e. you can send the full path or not and it'll launch them both the same).

the vp wrapper hides the launching of visual pinball and wait then for a certain key to be pressed. when this key is pressed it closes vp without going back to the editor.

Anyone have an idea as to which 'key' you press to exit?
I am having the same issue.
