Best gun for PS2?
« on: August 02, 2004, 04:23:10 pm »
I was playing time crisis 3  ;D at the movie theater the other day and it got me to thinking of picking it up for the ps2. Do I need a guncon light gun? There are lots of cheaper guns but I havent found any good reviews on them. Suggestions? ???

Get the official GunCon2 guns.  They are made by Namco (who makes Times Crisis), are super accurate, and support progressive resolution (480p).  Worth every penny.

Has Namco modified the Guncon for the latest gun game releases? The one that I got with Vampire Night only supports composite video, not svideo and certainly not component. I would buy a lightgun (for the PS2) that supports component video in a heartbeat.

more importantly, you want to find a gun w/ a pedal.  If i find one (looking as i type) i will post it...

i have a psx gun (thrid party) that recoils and w/ pedal..

i dont know about the progressive resolution.  i know they wont work with a refresh rate greater than 60Hz.  but i do know they work with component.  just plug em into the green line.

Interesting. I just tried my original Guncon 1 hooking it up to the green component line and I could get it to register playing Point Blank 3 (PS1 game). Of course, it still does not work with my 55" Mitsubishi RP, but it would track in the center. Could not test my Guncon 2 this way, since it is not useable for PS1 gun games and it seems that the flood movers "misplaced" my copy of Vampire Night (read: they stole or intentionally removed it since it was in the box with the G2, but it is magically no longer there).

I've gotten it to work with my vga monitor (progressive) via a scart cable, and an upscanner. The guncon2 still reads composite sync info at 15khz, but the gun (or is it the game?) does the proper conversion when reading the upscanned display at 31khz (640x480x60hz).

I have not tried it with component cables, but would agree that it should have no problem getting sync off the green line (at 480i at least).

i might buy this
http://store.videogamecentral.com/ps2lo3liwg2c.html

I have this gun, and it works great, and will work on PS2 as well as PS1.  However, the problem is that it is incompatible with the Time Crisis 2/3 games, as it does not have a USB connector, and the games must require it (they would not recognize the gun).  It's a good gun otherwise.

Is it possible to play Time Crisis 3 without the pedal?  The only pedal version I've found does not support Time Crisis 3.  :(

You can.  You just use any of the other buttons on the gun.  And you could always hack in your own pedal, too (this IS BYOAC).

Oh, BTW, Time Crisis 2 is also compatible with Guncon 1's.  Time Crisis 3 requires Guncon 2's.

And another option - get a Guncon 1 (since the one linked is so great) and use the EMS USB 2 to convert it from GC1 to GC2 for TC3.
There is SO a spoon.

Yeah, it appears to be a burnt disc because it says " (Compatible with the Modify PS2 console). "

At first glance, I thought that this was a fake too since I had never heard of it and a legitimate collection like this would sell out here. However, this compilation actually does exist:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/data/16952.html
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-70-1s5-71-r.html

The reason that I think the seller includes the "modified PS2" statement is because the game is an import, not because it is a copy.

One of these days I am going to learn japanese. I am sick of none of the good games being released here...

Should I buy this. Would there be any way of getting it on my hdloader w/o modding my system. Could I transfer it with my computer to my hard drive?
I really could you this in my arcade machine.

To the best of my knowledge, you can only use imports with the HDLoader on a modified PS2.

There's a program available that allows you to put the PS2's HD in a windows PC and transfer games to it that way...

So, yes you can get a burned copy of a game to the PS2 HD without modding it.

I do not think that it is a matter of transferring the disk image to the hard drive through the HDLoader. Rather, I believe that it is a problem with loading and running the image from the hard drive. An unmodified PS2 will look at the region code for the game, part of the image, and refuse to play it because it is an import. A chipped PS2 skips the region test and can load the image without a problem. I think that there were a few threads on this at the AnandTech forums.

back on the topic of ps2 guns...

I was told that area51, for the PS1, is only playable with yet a different gun than guncon1 or 2...

I have the game and my guncon doesn't work on it, so you could say I'm definitly interested in figuring it out.

Is there such a gun that will work for area51 guncon1 and guncon2 games or am I just asking too much?

I had a few more questions on the Guncon 2 gun.  I have heard both that it is and is not backwards compatible for PS1 games.  Can I use PS1 games with this gun?  Also, I got this off of ebay (haven't received it yet):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8123435406&ed=1091899498000&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOT:US:3

I was wondering how it works if you have multiple guns with only 1 PS2 console?  How do both guns hook up to the television at the same time, or can they?

GunCon2 is not compatible at all with PS1 games.  The PS1 emulation inside the PS2 does not support the USB port (which the guncon2 uses).  GunCon1 should work.

The PS2 supports 2 guns via the two usb ports on the front, and the composite sync connector just piggybacks off the first gun's composite connector.

What if I'm using s-video?  Does it require me to use composite input?

The GunCon2's connector is an RCA jack typically used for composite input.  If you are using an s-video connector, then you will need to hack pin 3 (luminance) to the guncon2' composite input.  Example pinout here: http://www.proav.de/index.html?http&&&www.proav.de/video/s-video.html

Thanks for the great information.  Sorry for my electronic ignorance, but you might have to be a little more specific on how this is done.   :-[  (I see the wire you are talking about, but I'm not sure what would be considered the composite input)

No prob.  The GunCon2's composite input plug is used to capture the video sync rate (in this case 15khz).   This sync rate is part of a composite signal, and also part of the luminance signal on pin 3 of an s-video cable.  If you are serious about keeping the connection s-video to your display, then you will need to hack your ps2 s-video cable to expose the wire for pin3 and splice it off to a seperate RCA connector (along with a gnd wire).  If you don't feel confident in doing this hack of your cable, then you will have to revert to using the standard PS2 connector with RCA (composite) plugs anytime you want to play lightgun games.

Actually, now that I think of it, I'm using this s-video cable:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41015&item=8122907626&rd=1

It has the capability to output both s-video and composite.  Would I still need to hack it, or just route the composite through the gun?

I received my guns/games today.  For anyone looking for a Guncon 2, I HIGHLY recommend this seller (he sells them all the time).  I got 2 Guncon 2 guns in mint condition, a brand new, shrink wrapped Time Crisis 2 and a brand new condition Time Crisis 3 for $39.99 shipped!  He sells the same thing with Ninja Assault for $10 more shipped.

I got the same combo from this seller for $34.99. I recommend it also. The guns were great and you cant beat that price. If you dont see it immediately be patient, his auction pops up from time to time.

Im fond of the one that came with TC2. Good stuff.

sleek, lightweight, and fully functional.
