xbox/halo/console questions
« on: June 15, 2004, 01:47:00 pm »
for you experts:  My wife and I have a ps2 we bought for xmas.  Don't play it much.  I'm a BIG fan of FPS (quake, duke nukem, half life, now playing farcry) on pc using keyboard/mouse.  I can't get use to playing with the sticks on the controller, can't hit anything as my aim keeps jumping around.

1.  so, how do you guys play FPS's with a controller?  I've rented MOH and couldn't play it.

2.  a good buddy has convinced me that I would love halo and the "lan parties" he sets up.  So, I am about to try FPS on the xbox and willing to give it another shot.  Amazon has a special on an xbox/halo combo.  is there a device that I can use to connect both xbox and ps2 to tv? (and atari 2600????? maybe too much to ask for).  my wife wants to play zelda on a gamecube, so to keep peace I may have to buy yet a third system.  too many cables to change out unless I can get some type of switch box.

I was thinking about holding out for xbox 2, but then I read the latest news that it will be next year, and halo 2 is scheduled for later this year.

thanks,

The thing about AV selectors is you need to make sure you get one that will match how you connect to your TV.  I use component cables to connect my PS2, so me getting a composite or s-video switch is going to be a downgrade in quality.

I can't play FPS on consoles to save my life either.  But then again, when I first started playing Quake, I couldn't use a mouse to aim to save my life.  Grew up playing wolf3d.  My point is that it's probably more of a matter of practice.

If you want some tips for FPS on consoles I try to help you out.

1.  Set the controller with what is natural do not take the defualt settings if you dont feel them.

2.  The thumb stick needs smooth motion to work the best so dont try jerky movements with it.

3.  If it is jerky turn down the sensitivity some and try again.

4.  Sidestep is a larger factor in console FPS's than in computer ones.

5. Try not to move the thumb stick as much move your whole player into line for aiming, this works very well in Halo.

6. Practice, Practice, Practice.

7. Once you get good you will no longer think about what direction you move or shoot but you will just do it, it is like using the force, stay relaxed and patient.

Anyway if you have any specific questions about FPS or something post them and I'll try to help (I would consider myself a FPS console/PC Guru if it did not sound like bragging)

As for getting all those systems you can used ones for alot off the normal price, also consoles dip in price around november for the big holiday push.  Hope I helped

If you really need to connect component of multiple systems and can't find a component selector.  Get two composite selectors.  Connect the three colors to the yellow, red and white of one.  Then use the other to connect the sound, red and white.  Pain in the butt, but is works.  Or if you have a newer tuner that will also work to handle a couple inputs.  I have 6 systems connected to my main tv (Xbox, PS2, Gamecube, Dreamcast, PSOne and SNES).

I have all of those hooked up and still play only Halo.  I LOVE HALO!!!!  Even better with a LAN party.

Here is a good component selector.  I don't have it (kinda expensive), but I should since I have 3 component devices, and my receiver only supports 2.  :'(  It also includes multiple optical audio inputs and ethernet ports which I could use too.

when playin halo the pistol is the best gun. use it and get good at it.  you can kill someone with 3 shots. u can get a killtacular(4kills one right after the other) with one pistol clip.  try this by your self and take the pistol recticle and touch the bottom of the circle on top of the person your shooting's head.  pull the trigger three times( don't hold down.) dead.  go kill em like the terminator  now.

Since this is about Halo, how many here play Halo against others on  XBCONNECT.COM? My son and I play. It is a blast. I am with many of you though in that I suck at aiming. I am used to the old style controllers. But Halo is worth the Xbox alone. That is pretty much all I play on mine. We should get a game together on xbconnect. At least then I would know I am getting killed by people closer to my age. :P
