Video Card Recommendations Needed - HELP!
« on: June 13, 2004, 09:27:21 am »
I am embarking on a project for a friend and need some help on the video card.  Cost is an issue so I want to try and use a pc video card.  Here is what I have and what I need:

Moon Patrol cabinet converted to Vigilante.

I will be reverting back to moon patrol.  Since it is now wired Jamma I plan to use the J-pac to avoid rewiring the cabinet.

I have a 400mhz pc to use in the cabinet, but no AGP slots so I have to find a PCI card.

I would like to run windows.

The cabinet has a very nice 19" std res arcade monitor inside.

So, I am looking for a PCI video card that will output for std res arcade monitor and work with windows.  Any and all tips and caveats would be greatly appreciated.  THanks!

I thought the only way to get windows at 15k was a t64 chipset card or Arcadevga.

(He did say he wants to use windows)

Yep, for Windows on an arcade monitor the only (known) ways would be to use an ArcadeVGA or a Trident Blade (T64) card using Saka's modified drivers.

Missed the Windows part.

Why haven't people written arcade drivers for other chipsets?  I mean, there are a ton of chipsets that support this mode, why hasn't anyone (besides the Trident guy) written one?  The hardware docs are out there, mostly.

Also, with a system like that, why use Windows @ all?  ArcadeOS as a nice basic front end, and some nice horizontal games.  Good times.

Agreed, it would be nice if someone could write an Ati Rage arcade driver, seeing as they're much more common than Tridents and support just as many (if not more) native arcade resolutions.

I'm sold, so what ati rage card should I get?  I cannot decipher the different product categories for the ATI cards.  How much video memory?  I am using DOS with ArcadeOS.  Thanks!

So, did you end up getting an ATI card?  If so, do you have it yet?  Which one?  How does it work?

I got:

Lot Of (2) ATI  PCI Video Cards.
3D Rage II+DvD Chipsets.

They have not arrived yet.  I decided on DOS only as I have no AGP slot fo no trident or arcade vga.

That is wrong. With powerstrip I have successfully run windows and directx games on a 15KHz monitor with both nvidia (GF2 & GF4) and ATI (Radeon 9200) chipsets.

Please help me. I am so confused because I have an arcade monitor , a pc with a ATI Rage II display card. I just continue to configure it over 60 hours without sleep but still no idea. I am running WinXP. Could someone help me?

My problem is, i run the Arcade OS and it's find in the menu screen. But when I enter the games that I selected, it could not display at all and just have one red line in the middle!

Many thanks and please help me so that I could sleep!

the ATI rage II chipeset is not very good for advmame--it just doesn't have the range to work properly under advmame.

That said, to configure advmame see here: http://www.mame.how.to/

you might be better off to find a better video card (riva tnt2, trident blade t64, matrox g400) and start over.  wish i had better news...
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...
