Working on OutRun Conversion - Links to Pics Added

Wife and I found an OutRun cabinet sitting outside a dumpster today, and I was just talking about making a cabinet.  I am a total NOOB to the making or redesigning of the cabinet, I have scrounged the FAQ's, and am looking for advice.  

This is a standup cabnet with most all of the internals.  I was thinking about removing the brake and gas pedals, since I wanted to convert this thing to a MAME cabinet for 2 people, and can't imagine ther would be enough room for the wheel also, especially with the motor that is attached to it.  

Now the other part - In the dumpster, there were some old controller panels that I grabbed, I am thinking about using these parts, buttons and joysticks.  Unfortunately there were no trackballs.  Anyone have trouble with recycling these parts, or should I just go with one of the X-arcade two pwerson controllers and somehow make it fit.  

Is it a sin to cut up an existing cabinet, in particular,  the foot rests for the gas and the brake area.  If I don't use em, couldn't see why to keep them.

I would be interested in any and all of your leftover parts. I have a nice dedicated Out Run, and could use the spares.

Although I must say, driving cabinets do not convert very well to joystick cabinets.

   Thanks for the reply.  My wife really wanted me to pick up this cabinet, and the more I started pulling it apart, the tougher it looked to convert.  I take it that you kept yours as a driving version?  What did you use as for a monitor and your setup?  The reason I grabbed the cab was I didn

Hey, converting a cabinet is cool.  I'm not sure what an Outrun looks like off the top of my head, but you should have some fun with it.

Did you get this @ an operators shop?  You mention other arcade parts you found with it.

As for the stuff you found in the dumpster...hey, free parts!  Make use of what you can.  Then again, I'm a fan of dumpster diving for cool stuff.

Will take some pictures tonight - I have been working on it all morning.  I took the entire cab apart, and replaced the floor along with where you put your feet.  I wanted to put the thing on casters, and there was some dry rot on the bottom.  Now for figuring out how to mount the control panel, I am off to home depot, and going to get some supplies.  Even though I went to school for engineering, I am more of the Monster Garage type when I build stuff.  I am going to try to keep the case reclaimable if possible, but if the Sawzall beckons, who know what may happen.

Just judging by the picture on klov that cab looks like a good candidate for a replacement metal control panel. It would be pretty tough to make one from wood though, at least IMO. Good luck, nice find!

I'd be interested in those pedals if you don't plan to use them.

Where in TX are you, I am in Corpus Christi.  I took off the original wheel, but was thinking of making a panel that would be made with 1x10 and stick out no further than the feet.  This would facilitate getting 2 controllers in there and a keyboard.  Maybe too big, I dunno.  Will try to mock something up this week and put it together.  Any advice or help would be appreciated.

My Outrun is all original and fully working.

I would REALLY love to have your boardset, shaker motor, the original plastic panel (if uncracked with intact map overlay), and the little Ferrari logo off the steering wheel.

My machine is missing the map overlay and steering wheel logo, and a spare boardset and shaker motor would go a long way towards keeping mine dedicated for a looooong time.

Oooh, looking at your pics you don't seem to have a wheel, or map overlay, would still be interested in your boardset and shaker motor.

There's an operator near here I keep checking his stuff, but so far nada.  I've spoken to him before, and he doesn't let anything go to waste.

I think I may have found the display for this project - Apex 20" flat-screen stereo TVat Target this week for $88

The original screen was a 20"

I know that some people like the Computer monitor, and some like the TV, anyone have any experience with using these APEX TV's?

im using an apex in my other cab. The s-video quality is pretty good. The problem is that it doesnt turn on after you unplug it and plug it back in and also doesn't stay on the s-video channel. To solve this i drilled to small holes in  my bezel and use a drill bit to turn it on and change channels. You really can't even see the holes.

Couple of questions for you all that have done this before.  I am looking at an interesting power supply here http://store.yahoo.com/svcompucycle/ibest650watt-psu.html
It has AC outlets in the back of it, and I was wondering if it could control the monitor, lights, and speaker all from the PS vice using some other crazy way to get everything turned on/off at once, any thoughts?

I actually believe Out Run has a 19" monitor. I would suggest getting a standard 19" set with a standard shaped tube, that way it will match up with the bezel and what not.
