« on: February 03, 2004, 03:14:46 pm »
Found an interesting site today...

www.bidiots.com

I hope it lasts.  eBay needs a little competition!   ;)

It has a MAME section too!

I know, I know...

I wish something could intimidate eBay though.  And Wal-Mart, and Microsoft, and the Baby Bells...

Yeah... its called the federal government. That's what gave us the Baby Bells  ;D

A few years ago, the justice department (I think) was throwing the idea of breaking Microsoft up into about three seperate companies.

Actually, I remember what it was like when AT&T broke apart.  My dad used to come home complaining about Charlie Brown (former CEO of AT&T, pre-breakup) and how what was left of the Bell System would be dead in 5 years.

Strangely, I was dumb enough to follow my dad into telecom...5 years later, I got laid off from AT&T, who stated that the layoffs were due to increased pressure from the Bells.

Now, my telecom-oriented degree and background is worthless.  Do you think the feds are responsible???

Ebay has competition.  Yahoo and uBid.  I buy on yahoo all the time because I can get Magic The Gather cards (at least the older expensive ones) for much cheaper there than on ebay.  I also watch uBid for electronics since those are refurbished or factory rejects.  I got a nice pair of speakers form there that were factory rejects.  They just had a scratch mark on htem, nothing serious.

My other hobby is classic video game collecting...

If you are really hunting for rare titles, eBay is the only place to go.  That's the competition I'd like to see.  I've yet to find a non-common system (Like a complete Colecovision with box and expansion modules) or rare games (Bounty Bob Strikes Back) on Yahoo.  Haven't tried uBid though.  Gotta check it out!

There are a ton of other auctions sites, all added up they don't do the volume ebay does.

Yahoo used to be big, mostly because they had no listing fees so they were massively over inflated. It was impossible to find anything because some idiot would post 10,000 of the same listing. When they started charging listing fees there auctions dropped off exponentially but they also lost a lot of sellers.

If your going to sell something you might as well sell it on ebay because odds are  much better that its going to sell for more or at least sell.

Their is no serious competition to ebay and I doubt if there ever will be. They do what they do very well and I think there fee's are reasonable.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

Colecovision complete with box.....I have that! Destroyed it a long time ago though. That was my first attempt at a mod, tried hooking NES controllers up instead of using the spinners....why???? I've been kicking myself ever since.

Actually I thought it sucked when they broke apart old "ma-bell" They phones haven't had good reception, customer service, quality or any of it, since. Break apart the big, huge companies because they have a monoply on something and they overcharge?......Well instead of one telephone company overcharging now you have several, and they all are worse than the orginal. Stupid waste of government time IMO.
Now everyone wants the government to break up Wal-Mart and Microsoft and who knows who else?....Ya, that ought to work. Maybe the government needs "broken-up" Leave those big comapnies alone. If they don't work they will die out on thier own. Besides why should we complain, we got it damn good here in the ol' USA.

Agreed.  It was a much simpler time then.  Phone quality was good.  It was so easy.  Ma Bell actually "leased" you a phone!!  (That's right kids, no purchasing a phone allowed!!!)  And it was, in our area, 96 cents a month.  Good times!!

Had the government not broken up AT&T, I would still have my job in telecom that I absolutely LOVED.  Not to mention the pay that went with it....but that's another thread topic.
