mp3 volume

hello all

a quick question: when playing a list mp3 files in realplayer they play at different volumes. This is rather annoying. Is there a program that will automatically adjust the volume so that they all play at SAME loudness?

Winamp had a function, that I believe could do that.  I recall with winamp you could configure the equalizer based on the song that was being played, and save that setting.  With the amount of mp3s I have, that would be time consuming.  I would discourage you from any function that plays them all level, I don't think you will be happy.

Did you rip the songs yourself?  That is the best way to ensure that you are happy with the quality.  I have downloaded a lot of crap myself, so I ended up doing my own.

I've used MP3Gain and it worked very well for me.

As I mentioned before, I've used several WAV normalizing programs and all were a big disappointment when used in "automatic" mode.

MP3 Gain has made me a believer.....

How does this mp3gain work? It claims to be lossless and not to decode-reencode.
Does it simply adjust  the volume tag in the ID3v2 tag or does it really scale the track?
If I get a chance I might try to run it on a file and see if it modifies the whole file or changes ID3tags.

While I'm at it: do you have a favorite ID3 ta viewer and editor?

Edit: I looked in more details at the MP3Gain web site and what it does is tag the MP3 with a "replay gain" value in the ID3v2 field, so it works only if your player understands how to use the tags. I have no idea if players usually do or not...

MP3Gain  only stores the volume information in the mp3 tag in case you want to undo the gain change and revert back to the original file

Using MP3Gain, I always set the target "normal" volume gain at 98 db rather than the 89 default.
NOTE: At this level you are likely to see some tracks appear with a "Y" in the clipping column.
