Title: Rock Band Wii? --- Heck NO!!! --- Guitar Hero World Tour FTW! (Edit: RBII Maybe)
Post by: DaveMMR on July 06, 2008, 10:20:34 pm
;D Actually, I wouldn't know.  Don't take the subject line too serious, I was just having a bit of fun and can not possibly know if one will be better than the other.

But back on topic:  I was going to be picking up Rock Band after the summer since it was just released for the Wii but now I'm reading that the next Guitar Hero (World Tour) will not only be shamelessly ripping off Rock Band, but actually improving on it in two important areas for someone like myself who only owns a Wii out of the three current-gen systems.

First, my current Wii GH guitar will work with GH:WT, which is cool since I originally accepted that I would have to invest in a second guitar to work with Rock Band.  Although I'm reading the new guitar that comes with World Tour will have added functionality, the simple GHIII guitar will be fine for the casual party game.

Second, and most importantly, the Wii is getting DLC right out of the gate.  It'll be stored on the SD cards or internal memory.  Considering I previously said I'd live with expansion discs, I'm glad now that I may not have to.

There are other cool features like Create-a-Song that I won't delve into but still sound really cool.

How GH:WT will compare to Rock Band or Rock Band II is still open for speculation and debate.   But as someone who only owns a Wii (and doesn't want to get a PS3 or XBOX 360 right now), World Tour seems like the more attractive package.

I dont plan on picking up GHWT.... RB2 will support all the old instruments AND all the old DLC from RB1. Ive noticed a trend with GH games.... impossible note charts that dont match up with the songs and impossible/retarded achievements. I only have a 360, cant find a Wii for sale and dont want a PS3

I found it irritating that GHWT uses a whole different drum set than RB.

I might get GHWT if it comes without instruments.

I was thinking the same thing.  Theres no way I'm going to buy a second set of drums.

I’ve read about Guitar Hero World Tour. It sounds like Rock Band 1.

Konami to Start 'Rock Revolution' This Fall (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3167839)

Konami promises to have the "most realistic drum peripheral on the market" for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, while the Wii iteration will use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk for air-drumming and air-guitar strumming.

Air drums and air guitar sounds sort of <--non-heterosexual-->, but if I spend more than a few seconds thinking about it, playing with a fake drum set and guitar is just as <--non-heterosexual-->.

If this works it'll beat having to store and set up a fake drum set.

Rock Band forced Guitar Hero to make a sequel to match Rock Band’s game play.

Hopefully all these new band games will force Rock Band 2 to be really improve the game play.

It would be nice if Rock Band 2 would release for all the systems at the same time instead of just the 360.    :-\

My excitement for a Rock Band 2 clouded my vision.

I didn't think anything about the 360 first release until your post.  I did a search, there's no technical reason for it, it's just a Microsoft/Harminix marketing thing.

That's BS.  I've lost any loyalty I had for Rock Band.

Hopefully Guitar Hero World Tour has better game play than Guitar Hero.

Ummmm...

Features do not equal gameplay.

Gameplay is one area that RockBand kicks Guitar Hero in the nuts.

We'll see if those features are enough to matter, but Activision's note charts suck, and they are gonna have to pull a miracle to make me want to go out and purchase another crapload of proprietary instruments.

For gameplay, I'll take any other genre over rhythm-based.   GH and its contemporaries have always been about drunken social play for me.  Features are dictating my decisions on this one.

AND you get 20 DLC songs of your choice
AND you can import all your RB1 songs to your harddrive to use in RB2.
AND you already have a world of fully capable DLC from RB1

Rock Band kicks GHWT squah in the nuts.  Its not even close.  Enjoy the Aerosmith and 80s expansion packs though, Im sure they are wicked awesome.

Activision was retarded to let Harmonix leave.

Enjoy the Aerosmith .... expansion pack though, Im sure [it is] wicked awesome.

Unless that was sarcasm (which is warranted) then the answer is "no", it is not awesome, unless you like classic Aerosmith (i.e. Columbia label) and nothing but Aerosmith (oh, 10 non-Aerosmith songs - but whatever).

I'm reading up on RBII and now the decision is much harder.  I'm taking a "wait and see" on this one.   Rock Band II has an awesome lineup, but are they going to stiff Wii on features GHWT is promising for the system?   Are they going to release it for the Wii half a year after every else already played it to death?   For me, this is what's keeping Guitar Hero a contender.

My mistake I doubled check.

Quote
Q:Will Rock Band 1 DLC continue after release of Rock Band 2?
A:There is no "Rock Band 1" DLC or "Rock Band 2 DLC", all DLC is cross-compatible.

that means Rockband 2 drums will still have 5 inputs.
GHWT will have 6.

GHWT will combine the two symbols to the red pad when using RB1’s drums kit, I thought it was RB2 combining the two.

GHWT will be more complicated which may or may not mean it's more fun.

I'm still going to wait to see what actually makes it to the final versions before I spend anymore on Rockband.  I've lost interest in playing the solo mode, and the song I have are fun enough for parties.

Oops I didnt read the thread title, I didn't count on being handicapped by trying to play real games on a Wii, I don't know enough about whats going on there to form an opinion.

On the 360 or PS3 though, RB2 destroys GHWT.  They are keeping boss battles.  Harmonix's note charts are way better as well.  Better game, tons more content, and no lame boss battles.

The Wii probably doesn't really need a hard drive... large format SD cards are easy to get now.  Who is going to buy 8 gig worth of songs?

WiiWare titles have gotten humongous (relatively speaking) to the point where they take up a large chunk of internal memory and transferring them to and from an SD card takes minutes.  Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People, Ep. 1 took upwards of 10 minutes to transfer off the internal to the SD.  They need a hard drive (or similar) if they want to get the most out of WiiWare.

Back on topic: If the game can call the music off the SD fast enough, then that's fine enough for me.

I can't remember for sure right now but I seem to remember reading that being unable to run stuff off of SD is a software restriction, not hardware.  Could be wrong, though.

I forget how many USB ports the Wii has?  I'm already using one so if there aren't two then I wouldn't be able to use a hard drive anyway.

Hi there!  ;D  (RB1 transferred on-disc songs, plus about 80% of the total available DLC, including the 500+ MB Blood Sugar Sex Magik album released today on PSN.)  That's just over 6GB, with a couple hundred more tracks available before the end of the year.  It adds up quickly.

Just so you guys know,  Guitar Hero World Tour is amazing.   I can't stop playing it, and I really liked Rock Band 2.

The interface is better
Open strums on bass
Countdown timer when unpausing the game
Slide solos
GH3 content works
Rock Band drums work (but simplifies the drums down)
Shared star power
The song creator is really in-depth
Custom songs and classical songs (fur elise, greensleeves, etc) are there out of the box.

Hands down winner of the two for me.  BTW ---  Rock Revolution is really, really hard.

I got it for 360.  Also, I don't have the instruments for it yet.  I have been using my GH3 setup.  I plan on buying this game when it comes out for the instruments.

For the record:

Rock Band 1 Guitar Works great
Rock Band 1 Drums Work (It merges the drums into 4 instead of 5)

Rock Band 1 Drums Work (It merges the drums into 4 instead of 5)

How does that work?

Are the drums in the same order from left to right as the columns on screen?

Do you still see 5 columns and the two on the right are for the right drum pad, or does it delete the last column on screen?

I was thinking of eventually getting the drum kit, but I'm just going to get the guitar and game bundle for now.

It spaces the columns out neatly and the colors line up with the rock band kits.  I can't figure out how to use star power with the drums though.  I can't watch the drum tutorial without the GH:WT drums either.

Excellent, I was afraid the drummer would have to get use to some funky drum pattern.

I'm not too worried about the star power since you can change difficulty during the song, if the drummer is starting to fail he can just drop down to easy until he recovers.

Hopefully the PS3 has the same features.

I was up until midnight playing  GHWT.

I spent most of that time creating a new band, logo and characters.

When I actually started playing the single mode I was a little disapointed.

I guess I was use to RB's single mode, although I don't think that matters anymore because RB2 doesn't have a single mode.  I'd have to say that even though I knew Ozzy was a hidden character, when I actually unlocked him it made the game.  I know Ted Nugent is a hidden character too, hopefully they have others because having them make a grand appearance on stage during the song for the first time makes the game.

Next weekend I'll have a few friends over and we'll start a band career.  If it's like the single career mode it might not be as accepted by the singers in the group.  In Single mode you have to sing 3 songs that were already picked by the venue.  I liked the way RB had venues allowed you to pick the songs, I'm sure the singers are going to hate the prepicked songs too.

I bought the guitar bundle.  I was thinking that this game would reignite the fun I had when we first started playing RB.  So far it’s not.  It's hands down a better game than RB, but it's still the same game, I don't know what I was hoping for, but this wasn’t it.

If you have RB and a GH guitar already, save yourself 40 bucks and just get the game.  The touch pads seem as useful as those lower buttons on RB. A cute novelty but not worth having another guitar size game pad if you already have 2.

If you don't have RB then the full GHWT bundle is the best way to go.

This is only a semi review, plus I was use to RB, so maybe next week after I play with a group and get more use to the game I'll make GHWT a must have, right now I can only recommend buying GHWT CD only.  It’s only a must have if you don’t have RB.

Thanks Dartful.  The decision is getting harder (between RBII and GHWT) so all the opinions help.

I just played RBII last night and I was impressed and blown away by how fun it all was (keep in mind this is the first time I'm playing a game in the RB series).  I spent most of the night on vocals.  Despite having a horrid singing voice (I had to sing Alanis falsetto), I'm quite good at keeping pitch.  To sum it up, it's definitely something to consider (as opposed to GHWT).

I haven't played RB2. but when I started losing interest in RB1 the one thing I thought would help keep my interest with GHWT was the customization.  I had created a Monkees band for RB, but I could only get Mickey and Peter to look like themselves and I couldn’t get the logo right either.

It took me 4 hours last night, but I now have a Monkees band that really looks like the Monkees.

I think having Davey on stage with Ozzy singing Mr. Crowley together made the game worth it for me.

You got a new version of the game and spent your first four hours creating a lookalike version of the Monkees?

I created a lookalike version of the Monkees on RB.
I've recreated the Monkees on GHWT.

You could say I spent about 4 hours fooling around with the customizer to create the Monkees, if I had to do it over again it wouldn’t take half as long.

Although a guy with kids might think 2 hours on a Sunday night to recreate the Monkees would be 2 hours to long.

;)

I was afraid to open up the music maker portion of the game, because I'd end up spending another 4 hours recreating their theme song.

Just saw GHWT at Sears tonight, for the first time.

I am a singer / songwriter, and though I fonud the original fun to play, I didn't plunk the money down for it.

Since I already have a Wii, however, the create your own song feature has REALLY got  me interested. From what I've read online so far, it's a pretty good studio creation program.  Might be the first time I've ever put down $100 for a game, but this thing is really looking like it might be my Christmas present to myself.  I've read everything in this post so far, but nothing specific to the Wii....if you are a Wii owner and should get it before I do, your thoughts on the Wii version would be appreciated.

Is the Wii version out?  I was under the impression it wasn't out until Dec.

I have the Wii version. Bought it the day it came out, OCT. 27 2008. Like someone else already mentioned, the single player is dissapointing. Well it's not bad, it's just that I found Guitar Hero III more interesting and with better songs. Not to say that GHWT has bad songs but GH3 had more likeable songs. At least for me. Many songs on GH3 where the type where you'd play it, finish the song, think it was pretty awesome and want to try it again. A lot of the songs on GhWt, are songs and bands I'm not familiar with. Nor in my bias opinion are they songs that give me that, "LETS PLAY THAT SONG AGAIN!! feeling. Only a small handful like Van Halen's Hot for teacher, Beat It and a few others. This could be because there are so many songs that the great ones are minisculed by the amount of regular songs.

I didn't buy the Guitar set. At first I regretted not getting the new guitar, but now I'm glad I didn't. You don't really need it. You can still play every guitar chord without it. What I do like about World Tour this time around you can do a career mode out of each instrument. Unlike GH3 you can only do career with Guitar. On World Tour you can do one for Guitar, Vocal, Drums and finally Bass. I didn't like how on GH3 you can only play Bass if playing with another person or playing on practice. You couldn't play it on career or quickplay.

While the single player isn't as exciting as GH3, it is rather fun to play.

I actually like the song studio creation. Well not for me, cause I couldn't write music even if I was mozart's decendent. But I do like what other people are starting to do with it. Mainly I like that they are getting some of the cooler video game theme songs and converting them to play. They're free to download. Some of the rather fun ones are the super mario bros theme, chocobo theme and megaman songs.  You can play them as a band too. i'm still trying to figure out if you can play them online with friends.

I bought the microphone for the game and even though I suck at singing, it can be pretty fun to try out. I just don't like that even though the mic doesn't use a wiiMote to connect, It still requires a free Wiimote to navigate through the menus. And if you have the wiimotes connected to guitars, then the mic becomes unusable. So you need an extra wiimote just for the mic.

The only thing now that really keeps me interested is the online band play. You can host a band or join someone else's online band and rock out together. So far I've only played with other people who use a guitar. But you can play any instrument as long as no one else on the other band is playing that instrument. This time around just playing a song, career, quickplay or online band mode, you receive money for the gig. So you don't only have to play career mode to buy guitars, costumes and other accessories from the rock store. But you do have to play career mode to unlock players and costumes and accesories that can later be bought at the store.

I found the game as a whole a bit dissapointing, but after playing for a while it's starting to grow on me. definitely thought it was worth buying it. I'm just glad I didn't get the new guitar or the whole band set. The new guitar isn't neccessary. And I've been hearing that 90% of the drum kits are having problems. I'm gonna wait for the 2nd generation of drum kits or a third party drum kit. Those should fix all the nasty problems the current drum kit has.

And last but not least is the buy and download song option. Right now they only have like 10 songs to download. Some are good like Jessies Girl, Hot blooded, American band and a few others. They're only 200 wii points per song. That translates to $2 US dollars per song. I'm hoping they'll release a lot more new cool songs to help fill the void of regular songs on GHWT. I guess if you liked GH3, you should like this one. I can't compare to Rockband 1 or 2 since i've never played either of them.

December, I believe.

From what I'm reading, GHWT instruments will work with RBII, so I may just get the GHWT set and RBII as a standalone.

I've read on the GH forum that Wii owners were upset that it was only a 2 player game and to play with 4 they need to connect 2 Wiis or be online, is that true?

I really do like it on the PS3 and was thinking about getting it on the Wii, for my nieces at Christmas, but if it’s lame I’ll just try and get the Wii Fit.

I liked the single player mode, but over the weekend I played as a band with my friends and for some reason all the “cash” I won (and Ozzy) was lost and replaced with the band’s progress, which sucked because I had gotten pretty far in single mode.

I did figure something out.  At one point no one wanted to sing so we propped the mic up against the tv speaker to see what would happen.  The singer scored 96-99% every time.
So, you can play one player in band mode pretty easily(unless you want to be the singer).  Just set the singer to Beginner and put the mic right up against the TV’s speaker.  I don’t want to start over again in solo mode so I’m just going to play it in band mode.  I think in band mode you unlock people automatically too and those people can be used in a solo career.  Because even though Ozzy who I had to pay to unlock is now locked again, the singer from the Smashing Pumpkins was unlocked.  We got to him in the band mode, but I had no interest in unlocking him, so I assumed he was just unlocked automatically.  Although I’m not dismissing one of my buddy’s doing something to unlock him and relock Ozzy when I wasn’t looking.

I never read anything that indicated the Wii version of GHWT was crippled in that way.  I seriously doubt it as it would be indicated in the review scores and there's really no reason for it to be like that considering the Wii has four-player capabilities.

Here is the post I was talking about.

Wii users come together to put an end to VV abuse (http://community.guitarhero.com/forums/55708/forum_topics/132176)

I've re-read it and it looks like they are just talking about online play.

You can only connect to one other Wii online.

Can anyone with a Wii GHWT confirm that 4 players can play on one Wii?

I've created a monster.

I went out the other day after a mind-numbing at the threshold of heck day at work and bought GHWT for the Wii to ease my stress (yes, I know it's odd, but music soothes me).

I had played it some in stores and knew that the beginner stage just requires one to hit the strum bar.  I told my wife that our 6 year old might enjoy just that much of it.

Bad move....very bad move.  She stood here and played through "Eye of the Tiger" on beginner mode until her eyes popped out of her head, then she moved on to Bon Jovi's "Living on a Prayer."   She's been singing and playing that one most of the evening.

Dang it, I KNEW I should have gotten the one with TWO guitars!  :laugh2:

My Guitar for GHWT is broken.  It registers the strumming twice and sometimes not at all.

I want to replace it, but there seems to be all these hoops I have to jump through.  Right now I have to wait for someone from their trouble shooting website to return my email with the info I need to replace it.

According to GH website, and other gaming websites this is a common issue.

When my buddy had to replace his RB guitar they had a website dedicated to it.  They seemed to be as concerned about fixing it as my friend was about getting fixed.
The GH people seem to be hoping I’ll forget about it before they have to fix it.  I’m hoping I just followed the wrong links and there is an easy way to get this fixed.

Did anyone else have to do this?  What's the fastest way to get a replacement one?

Rock Band games, at least for now, have universal DLC support. Guitar Hero doesn't, and still insists on releasing special editions of games (See Guitar Hero: Aerosmith or Guitar Hero: Metallica) instead of the more-versatile Rock Band Track Packs (See AC/DC Live Track Pack). I've also read stories about GH:WT instruments crapping out really early after purchase, some as soon as a week, but I went to a party a month ago where it was Rock Band 2 for 8 hours, and none of the new instruments were the least bit unworking, and the guy who brought it plays the game heavily, so I assume that all the instruments had endured significant wear and tear by that time.

However, I would not recommend getting either title on the Wii. 360 is by far the best platform for the GH/RB rhythm games, mainly because of hard drive space allowing you to use DLC and track packs more easily. If you had to get one on Wii, I'd get Rock Band. It just has better options for the music and is friendlier to those who download DLC than Guitar Hero.

Just for the sake of clarity, I'll point out that you mean Rock Band 2 for Wii (or that's what you should mean, anyway).  The original Rock Band for Wii doesn't support DLC.

Rock Band 2 with the Cymbals its freaking awesome.

The Guitar hero Drum kit doesnt even come close to the quality that RB2s kit is.

I got GHWT for my son for Christmas, and...

YUK!

The whole band aspect of the game was clearly thrown together out of necessity to have something/anything to compete with Rock Band.

The guitar stuff is fine, and I haven't had a chance to try out the drum stuff, because we are out of town, but the singing is horribly implemented (bouncy pitch indicator, no obvious indicator of performance, and ugly blurry text scrolling), as is the whole band togetherness. It is not easy to know that a bandmate struggling, and you have to save them before they "fail". There is no redemption like in Rock Band.

On the plus side (though I haven't created any music of my own, and I don't know that I ever will) it was neat to have some Christmas tunes to play, even if the sound quality could certainly use some improvement.

I also do like the guitar and the slide aspect of it. It is hard as hell to switch between it and the buttons though.

I definitely wouldn't ever recommend this game over Rock Band. Rock Band is what it is because the developers are musicians who wanted to bring that kind of joy of music to a game. They created the whole band aspect to truly give it a band feel. This iteration of Guitar Hero was clearly, to go back to my opening thought, made out of necessity, not love, and I think it really shows.

By the way, I was at Costco today and noticed that they have Rock Band 2 for Wii at $166.  Regular price everywhere else is $189.  That's a pretty damned good deal.

I wanted to chime in my 2¢. I picked up the Wii version of GHWT and I love it. I had been disapointed at the early reports of both Guitar Hero and Rock Band for the Wii. I was almost consitering picking up a used 360. What finally made up my mind was the combination of the new guitar, the DLC, and the Wii exclusive Jam mode that means my kids can make music on it. It was only $77 at target, $50 after I used a store credit I had laying around. (I can't believe I think that $77 is cheap for a Video game but that's the entry price to rock!)

I am looking forward to picking up the Metallica guitar kit so I'll have two set ups to play in co-op or vs. mode. For some reason I'm not all that interested in the singing or drums. I will probably pick up a mic so the kids can play around with it.

Bottom line: GH for the Wii satisfies everything I want in a Rythm game.

If you can find a store that still has an original Rock Band you can pick that up for the price of the RB2/GHWT game only.

I was getting into the Wii Fit and almost convinced myself to buy a Wii and Wii-Fit, but then after adding up the cost of both items and making room for another system I realized it'd be better to just have my PS3 play the P90X DVDs and have a piece of paper to write down my progress.

I'm hoping game developers for the PS3(Xbox) figure out that people are willing to spend money on original input devices for games that develop transferable skills, like motion detectors for boxing/exercise type games.

For Guitar Hero World Tour:
Free Springsteen Tracks!! Get 'em NOW! (http://community.guitarhero.com/forums/55708/forum_topics/989573)

Quote
The FREE tracks available for download are the classic "Born to Run" and the track "My Lucky Day" from Springsteen's new album, Working on a Dream.

But you need to hurry, these free tracks will only be free to download from January 27th, 2009 - February 4th, 2009.

I'm not a Springsteen fan, but I have the game so I might as well get the songs while they're free.

I got RB2 for Christmas and I just got GHWT with a new wireless guitar. The strum bar is a bit "clicky" but the GHWT wireless guitar is far more comfortable to play the RB1 guitar.

As far as gameplay goes, I pretty much always play by myself unless I am attempting to sing and play guitar at the same time. So I always played in solo tour mode in RB1. They took it out in RB2! Now you have to go through the whole band thing. With GHWT you can just pick up your guitar and play. I have not yet played drums or vocals yet with GHWT. But GHWT wins on solo guitar play.

I don't have a preference on the setlist. There are songs I like on both setlists, and some songs are in both games. I have never heard of a lot of the songs, but most of them are fun to play. RB2 currently has a much larger selection of songs due to the RB1 import feature and due to the large amount of downloadable content.

So far (through the first quarter of the game) GHWT is slightly easier. (Expert difficulty, I haven't played hard difficulty yet).

I played both games some more tonight, and I agree with PBJ. The quality of songs in the setlists of both games drops off after the first 4 or so tiers. I guess this is because they had to mix in the songs that would have been bonus songs in the previous games.

You’ll quickly get bored of the gimmicks that make each game different, once you do the games are all the same.  If you have one game you don't need the other, unless you're buying it for the extra guitar.

I had heard exactly that. But as a GH Noob (never having played any of them) I am pretty happy with GH: Workd tour. I picked up a USB mic and now I can play Guitar while my kids sing. I also brought my guitar to a friends house and we had fun with the Vs. modes and playing together in band mode.

I'd be really happy if the Wii would let you import the GH III set list to GH: World Tour But I won't hold my breath since they'd have to do all the drum and lyrics for each song.

Hopefully the metallica version will support the drums and vocals.

Since I started this thread a while ago as a debate as to what to buy, I've finally made that decision today.  I weighed the features, pros and cons of both and went with ROCK BAND 2 for the Wii.   It just seemed like the better package (and my GH3 Guitar works with it so all the better).   Thanks for all the input guys.
