Here we go yet again!
This thread is for the detailed design discussions and proposals regarding the front (obverse) side of the 2006 BYOAC tokens.
They will be .984" tokens. Submissions in black and white only. White should indicate the lowest point of the token, black the highest. If you want to show half-height details use gray. So that those of us who are not Photoshop Gurus are given a fair shot , no 'blinged' renderings should be posted. (Bling refers to color, photorealistic renderings.)
Guidelines/Rules
-No R-Rated material
-No trademarked or copyrighted images. (Pacman, MAME, etc...)
-No Bling - refer to last year's thread to see how blinged line art turns out.
should display "Build Your Own Arcade Controls" and the www.arcadecontrols.com URL on the front because BYOAC is the whole point of the tokens.
-If at all possible you should have your art in Vector format. (AI for example.) Next best is very high-res raster (Hi-res meaning greater than or equal to 300DPI,) but I discourage it because we have always used vector with superb results. Low-res artwork won't work, you will need to have someone fix it up for you. Vector fonts need to be converted to curves.
If you are submitting what you consider your final proposal, please say so in your post so that I know to copy it into the 'executive summary' thread in the Main Forum (OK mods?) that I will create when we get a few of them. Otherwise I will assume you are submitting it for group discussion and tweaking.
This is a sample from 2004:

We have a lot of talented new folks this year, I'll bet we get some kick-butt designs. Go for it gang!
-
:dizzy: :dizzy: :dizzy:
-
umm, generally don't overrule things out of hand, but ummmm NFW. ;)
-
I love the Harpal coin.
-
but but my coin is so much better
-
That one is better. :D
-
 ^_^ see it took some skeilz
-
I love MissionControls line "All your XBox Are Belong To Us" It could be the text around the coin. Maybe a Harpel face on the front, and an XBox on the back.
-
can we keep the harpal stuff to just a couple threads and get serious about the token designs?
damn I can't believe I just proposed that people be serious wtf
-
I hope this year we can get a cocktail design.... to mix it up a bit
-
If Troz is still around I would like to see him work on this some more:
-
I agree with mission on the cocktail theme. I quickly played around with some bare ellements and a rough vector of my fav cocktail, before shooting off to work. Very bare.. but just feeling the canvas.. ;D
-
awwww ok... ill try somethiung serious
-
I'm still around, even though I don't visit or post much anymore. Thanks for the heads up missioncontrol about the threads being up. I'll be tweaking my design.
Looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with this year!
-
I do have one suggestion for this years token....
not sure if this is the appropriate place for it or not as it deals with both side....
anyways...
We tend to fill as much of the background space not being used with texture.... while thumbing thruogh all my various tokens, I have notived that most of them use no texture for the back ground. let's try to sta away from the same textre we used for the background of the 04 and 05 tokens... I'd like to see great looking artwork but a simple background this year.
if we should hold off on this discussion untill the artworks picked out or use a different thread for this discussion let me know Santoro
-
If Troz is still around I would like to see him work on this some more:
I AGREE!
:notworthy: I SUPPORT THE COCKTAIL DESIGN FOR THE 2006 BYOAC TOKEN
OH HOW I WISH I WAS ARTISTIC AND KNEW HOW TO USE PHOTOSHOP
-
awwww ok... ill try somethiung serious
Yeh Yeh.. I know. :P I should have given clearer reasoning for the slapped up design. It was more for feedback on the type of cocktail design to use... if token goes down that path. ie The classic Midway like Troz used, or other not so classic designs. :)

the classic design most definately

<------ Sits here waiting for Pixelhugger's submission so I can vote for it. Last years tokens were awesome.

I would welcome his participation as well, but he has stated that he may sit this year out. I think he was doing this to give others a chance.
-
damn I can't believe I just proposed that people be serious wtf
Dat wuz funny.
Hey MC you mentioned texture. On the orriginal MAME tokens the arcade machine CP has a brushed look, are you ok with that? On that same idea how is the brushed look achieved? Is that in the punch or is it part of the graphic? Is this what grey equals? Also Would you be ok with a lined or gridded pattern as a bkg?

Yeah, when you get a high end artist on the job, it kinda makes it hard on the rest of us. I consider myself pretty good but that guy is polished. Btw, I love the video game themed pizza comercial he did.

I'm not sure how to illistrate the textures... I loved the textures on the mame tokens...
it's just that dooted texture on the BYOAC tokens don't pick up the grime as well and has been used twice allready....
but that's just my opinion...
-
Here's my beginning work on a token. I will have this updated soon and more versions to come with new styles :).
Oh, and I will work on textures as well.

I'm getting a redX haldir
-
Yea I tried to embed it but the image was too big probably. I posted a link to my dev art for now :). Thanks for the quick reply.

Here is my attempt at something simple and clean, but with enough detail to make this coin pop. :)
-
My attempts... (Although, I love haldir's cabinets...)
Not sure whether these should go on front or back, so just adding them to the front thread..
I have no clue how many 'depths' there are on the tokens. So, my thinking is this:
black - highest depth
white - lowest depth
gray - textured
Anyways, this is my attempt at a slogan, and my first attempt at the token..
I like this second design better.. I tried to illustrate some depth with the levels and to create an 'infinite' look.. My photoshop/illustrator skills are severely lacking.. Also, on this one, I like the concept of an army of little 1-ups ready to give their lives for me.. :D
(http://www.e-funk.net/arcade/tokens/token_idea2.jpg)
Yeah, I know the fonts aren't great.. But...
Let me know what you all think! (And be kind.. I'm a programmer, not a designer! :D )
Thanx!
-
I like the slogan.
I like the way they keep going back and it is a clever use for only 3 colors.
Yes the font needs to be changed.
I say keep the slogan from the first, keep the inside image from the second, and work on the art around the edge.
Has anyone seen the retroblast tokens? It has rings that go into it. I think that this would be sharp but make em more narrow. I am at work right now and my machine is rendering a DVD so I can not doodle. I am going nuts as I am having a lot of ideas.
-
(http://tn3-1.deviantart.com/fs10/300W/i/2006/089/9/4/HEADS_FINAL_by_magic0200.jpg)
I would recommend the circle with the stars be a light grey to signify it not being raised as high as the cabinet....the way you have it now you've got two layers... high and low... I'm not sure how that will work on a token....
also the watermark is killing the visual of it....
-
Thanks for the tip. I updated the images as reccomended so feel free to look again.
The coin contains 3 levels with grey included (w-base g-mid b-high). I was trying to achieve a subdued look with lighter texture use. With how small the coins are I would assume that texture would power the image.
-
(http://www.e-funk.net/arcade/tokens/token_idea.jpg)
Not a fan of the design. HUGE fan of the slogan.
-
These are hot!

Here's a quick mock-up of an idea.
Orbian
-
Should I continue in this new direction? or stick to just the cocktail? I realize that some of the detail is most likely too small for the coin, but this is just a start.

wow Troz you have outdone last year's submit

Troz, I think that is the right direction. Any ideas for the back side?
-

Damn Troz... That looks nice and clean.. :o. I'll hang up my very average art skill boots right now!! Outta my league!
-
Hey how long is Santoro holding open the door on this?
-
I want to keep it open for at least a few weeks, but will go longer if we only have a few 'fully-baked' designs. I want to be able to vote from a selection, not 2 or 3. I like what I see so far though.
-
Just awesome so far! Please do keep submitting ideas, even if you think yours isn't as polished as someone else's. You might inspire someone or someone might bling up your idea

FYI
anybody wishing to enhance my tails designs feel free to do so, I have very little photoshop skills so you won't hurt my feelings a bit......
-
OK, here's a merging of my ideas.. I like the layout quite a bit.. Still not sold on the font, but that's easily changeable, now...
I made the lines on the 1-up men a little more defined because I was afraid it might be _too_ detailed for the coins..
Since feedback on the 'slogan' has been positive, I'm keeping it for now.
I'm still not sold on this being a 'front' design. Especially since I like the idea of a cocktail (even though I don't have one.. yet...) But I'm not sure what would go in place of the site name.. I'd probably put the year in place of the url.. Speaking of the year.. is that typically a front or back thing? I'm not sure where I'd put it on this design, though...
Anyways, without further ado, here it is. Please give me feedback! I'm enjoying actually participating this year! :)
Thanx!
-
jfunk... throw it up in the tails design replacing "Build Your Own Arcade Controls" with "No Cash Value" as for the URL replace that with BYOAC... I like your picture more of a tails design, but that's just me....
my opinion is the front conatins:
www.arcadecontrols.com
Date
and a catchy slogan
The back containing:
"No Cash Value" or "One Credit" or (something similar)
BYOAC (within the picture)
another catchy slogan or "No Cash Redemption"
but that is just my opinion and not set in stone anywhere....
-
Just curious, as I haven't seen it posted anywhere, but what does the winning designer get (other than the fact that their design is on the quarter)?
-
winning is it's own reward....
I'd love to see one of my designs made into a token... and know that other members are feeding their cabinets with it....
-
Well, I just ask because this obviously has to have some profit in it for santoro (which is cool, since alot of work goes into this I am sure). The winning design should at least get the first 100 off the press or something.
-
I agree with MC.. Seeing something I designed being minted without going through the actual TROUBLE of minting it is more than enough reward for me.. :) Even if I have to pay for my share of tokens :)
Vote for me! :D
Thanx!
-
BADABOOOOOOM Haldir! Man that design is just great! I see I'm not the only Blambot fan :applaud:
I really really like it. Looking forward to another time sinker of a thread to become addicted to. :)
I also like the "beckoning" feel of that stool by Troz's cocktail.
EDIT: Whooops didn't see page two. I also like the latest version of jfunks. That could work very well with multiple layers IMO.
-

There are perks that are worked out on the side. It can vary based on whether it looks like I am going to be profitable or not though. So far I have been lucky, the community seems to be expanding enough to justify these projects yearly.
-
Personally I don't see the need for the "winners" to get some sort of prize other than a token perk, pun intended. Having your design on an arcade token is just cool period. :soapbox:
-
Well, I just ask because this obviously has to have some profit in it for santoro (which is cool, since alot of work goes into this I am sure). The winning design should at least get the first 100 off the press or something.
THere is also alot of time and work done on Santoro's end... I'm sure way more work than the profit comes out to be...
bah enough on this...
let's get back to the creative process....
A vote for my tails design is a vote for slackers everywhere
-
FYI
anybody wishing to enhance my tail ... feel free to do so
You wish, dude.

I agree. Maybe rework it a bit too so it would go better with trozs design, my 2c for the day! :D
As for the comment on santro making a profit on this venture, when you consider the time and effort that it takes to do the business end of the project, what is hes time worth? I :applaud: him and think he deserves every penny he makes.
-
(http://www.e-funk.net/arcade/tokens/token_idea3.jpg)
I would really like to see that one present on the final design,... ;D
Slogan is a must-have I think, it is really smart and well thought.
Keep up the good work Jfunk, you are already sure to get my vote on this one and any further enhancements you will apply on the layout.
Current base is rock solid IMO... :applaud:
-
I *gasp* agree with MC (and other comments) and have moved my design to the 'back' thread :)
I love the way the front designs are looking! Please, please, please more people give their ideas! The more options there are, the better the tokens will be!
Thanx, all, for being so constructive in these threads! And thanx for the positive remarks!

don't feel bad there are a few things worst than agreeing with me.... granted therearen't very many things worst... but rest assured there are a few things... ;D

this is an amazing design its simple and it looks good. it has my vote
the token with a bunch of people is kinda scarry if u ask me
oh mabey remove the 25 cents thing and move the no cash value making the design larger

Here is my submission for the front. Somthing cool but yet totally different.

What the??
when i did the design i was trying to think outside of the box. So thats when i came up with the angry joystick with the hammer. Looking at everyone elses design i wanted to do somthing that was totally different. I figured many people are going to use a cabinet on there picture, so what better way to represent building and arcade in an abstract but thoughout way. Here is my submission for the front. Somthing cool but yet totally different.
-
I noticed a few slogans, so I thought I'd throw in two lines that I've used recently for RetroBlast and GameRoom ads:
"Reliving the Past, One Game at a Time."
"Build. Restore. Play."
I think the second is especially appropriate for BYOAC.
(Update: realized this would be more appropriate for the back thread, copied message there.)

yeah.. it has a very distinct Russian vibe going. I can't look at it without thinking hammer and sickle.
I really like Haldir's design, but I would drop the "25c" from each side.
-
I hadn't thought of that but you are correct. At least 30% of past token orders are from outside the US, so we need to avoid references to any single country's currency.
-
I agree with them on the 25c... perhaps "1 credit" or "1 token" if it's going to hav a currency on it
-
I agree with them on the 25c... perhaps "1 credit" or "1 token" if it's going to hav a currency on it
"1 Token" is sort of redundant - I can see it's one token, after all. ;)
I'd think that "1 Credit" or "Good for 1 Game" or nothing at all would be the way to go. After all, these are more of "souvenir" tokens than actual arcade-use. (Although all the games in my gameroom are token-operated!)
-
Alright guys,
seeing some interest in my design, I went and changed it to "1 Credit". However I ask that everyone looking at this image please resize it to a quarter (actual coin) and notice how things just start to blur. This is why I put the 25C there which at actual scale looked clean.
Anyways, enjoy and we'll keep trying until we get a 2006 coin.
-
try a different font when you scale it down that might help
-
"1 Token" is sort of redundant - I can see it's one token, after all. ;)
I recall this coming up last year.
Madballs, I get your point in this design now, not my taste, but very creative. ;D

Can we please see the rework of your cocktail design?

I like it.
-
I personally think that the coins would look just fine without any indication of "credit" or "token" etc etc.
It's a token... we all know what it's for. I think Haldir's designs would look much cleaner with just the machines themselves, and it would also solve the problem that "1 Credit" would be tough to read at that size.
Just my .02
-
I agree. I like the clean design a LOT (especially the cocktail), but was wondering if you could figure out some way to put the URL (arcadecontrols.com) on there?
Leave BYOAC.. Leave 2006.. Remove '1 Credit'.. Add URL?
Thanx!
-
I wanted to see em without the "1 credit" so I hope you don't mind me messing with your design Haldir. If you do, I'll remove them. I just think they look better this way.
I also think a design on the screen of the upright might be possible, but may make it look a bit busy.
Again, I hope you don't mind me butchering your work :) Just wondered how it would look.
-
I like it better without "1 Credit" or "1 Play"? If so, I vote for "1 Credit". Some games take 2 or 3 credits, so "1 Play" can be a bit misleading.
Good ideas so far guys. I like the cab with the tools around it, as well as the standup on one side and a cocktail on the other.
-
I love the haldir designs, but it looks a little plain without the 25-cents there. How about a more distinct 'ridge' around the perimeter.
I tried a "hashed" outside edge but it didn't look right. This is rough and I'm not sure the 'gray' coloration is what should be there or if it should be filled in black (I don't know the height 'rules', sorry). But what about something like this:
-
2006 the year of the cocktail
-
Alright guys, here's a compilation of what people requested. With the exception that without the 1 credit or 25c piece, the coin just looks bare :(. I also added just the black and white version because at the size of the coin, It's really only going to strike with a hard and soft light on your eye.
-
ummm you should take 25 cent off that cab picture.
-
Finally, here is a new combination of both together. :)
The coin just becomes too bare without something there. Just sub the 1 credit version if the 25c doesn't ring your bell :). That'll be the next step but right now it's almost 2am by me. Time for bed !
Not bad for a guy who's never taken art :) lol
-
Haldir the front side also needs the www.arcadecontrols.com url on it.... so perhaps you could make the one life and one cretit joined by a dash "one life-one credit"
-

I hate the "25c" on the design, maybe try "2005" or "BYOAC". :banghead: I mean 2006!!

does anybody remember where the 2005 token poll link is?
I wanted to take a look at the finalist but my search-fu is weak today....
I've tried several different keywords but no luck....
thanks
found it

I really like the designs so far! I am not commenting on individual designs this year, trying not to slant folk's opinions in any way. I will chime in when I see technical or logistical problems though to avoid future problems.
If you have an idea but aren't artistic, please post it. Like Saint said earlier, someone with the graphics abilities might pick it up and run with it. I'd really like to have at least 5-6 designs to chose from when we vote if possible, and I'll bet a lot of folks have truly good ideas but are being shy about it. This is a team effort, no shame in collaborating here.
Keep the designs coming!!!!
-
are we going to have one poll like last year and the top 2 votes are heads and tails or are we going to vote on the ones in the heads thread for heads and the tails ones for tails?

I think the text on that one might be really hard to read at coin size, but I love that design. Much better IMO
-
I agree the font for the text will probibly be difficult to read when reduced down to token size....
I think since the slogan "The Game Is Never Over" was used in 2004 we should replace it with something else "One Life-One Credit" is a suggestion I have or since it is the heads side of the coin go with "Build Your Own Arcade Controls" and leave the slogan to the reverse side....
my $.02
-
I really really like that cocktail design. I love the .25 cent upright too.
Maybe try a typeface for the rim that's a bit less stylized.
I also really like the one life one credit slogan. Almost sounds like a motto.

This design is certainly heading in the right direction in my opinon. :)
-
I hope Troz doesnt mind but I modified his 2005 design for 2006 just for the sake of it as I love this design soo much!

it's going to be a tough choice between the two cocktails this year

I love Troz's cocktail, but I don't think the font will mold well; the C's will end up looking like O's and the I's and L's will also be difficult to distinguish. If the C could be opened up a little more and the tail on the L made a little longer it would be perfect.
I'm torn between this and his new cocktail design with 'added stool':
-
The font can be changed... We need to concentrate on the design
-
STOOL!
-
Troz try moving the stool and cocktail to the left a little bit more so that more of the cocktail cabinet is showing
-
The bezel on Troz's old one needs to be fixed the same way the new one is.

Anyone creative who can do this?? My skills in Adobe and paintshop suck ass!
My biggest problem is I think I have an idea but just cannot get it done due to this lack of skill. Maybe ill need to try do something on paper and scan it to hopefully prompt someone to help get it "fine tuned".

If you scan it they will come...
-
I haven't had much time to work on anything thanks to Real-LifeTM. I'll try to get the suggested design modifications done today and ditch the stool.
-
Finally had some time today...
I thought of trying to squeeze in some sort of game into the monitor but thought it might look too busy.
-
I like it without the Kamakazi background. I can't decide if I like the stool or the stool-free version better.
-
Somethings missing from this version, which is why I tried the version above. There needs to be something in the background I think.

how about going with circles or a spiral? I really like the way they came off on the MAME token... You had an example back in 2005 similar to what I mean... just move the date to a better spot...
I'm going to pull this from the 2005 design to show what I was talking about
(http://www.twistedrails.com/mamecab/tokens/trozfront8.gif)
Edit: use the 2006 cocktail design and layout and the 2005 circles
-
There are some great designs this year!!! I just had to try a cocktail to go along with JoyMokeys "all your game are belong to us" concept.
-
a variation...
-
ARCADE5280 I do like the second design... I would take off the "BYOAC" and "No Credit" that are on the cabinet... at a reduced token size it will possibly be difficult to read...
and put the coin slots on the second design...
also the oposite player is missing the inward cut on on the cocktail top...
with a few minor tweeks it will look great

Thanks for the suggestions. I added the coin slots to the one and the 2nd player cutout.
I also made the cocktail a bit bigger and added the "build your own arcade controls" and wood grain.

That's beautiful! :o
Nice job!
-
Here's one more with heavier lines to show up better and a pixel grid floor that could match the pixels in perspective of joymonkeys idea.
-
the only thing that's bugging me about your design is the angle of the top two coin slots
-
My mechs are slanted, but I think that you are right. I fixed the slanted coin slots and replaced the existing jpg [04]. Thanks again missioncontrol! keep the comments coming.
-

Thanks! I wanted it to match your design and had to borrow the starburst from your design.

looks much better.... I fugured you were going for the slantedcoin mech look... it just didn't come out right...
don't forget the year since it's a heads design
-
Sorry for all the posts...I am just having too much fun. Heres my revised token...
I think that the wood grain and onscreen game could be too fine of details. I figure, even if the minting process shows some dots on the screen at least it dosn't look like the game is off or worse...not working.
which background is better...the starburst [05] or the vortex [02]?
-

C) The grid. :)
-
agreed I like the grid design background also
-

I believe the 2006 is too small. The 2005s on the currently minted tokens are too small and I'd hate to see that happen again. The numbers all mushed up together and it's hard to even distinguish the "5" as a "5". Perhaps somebody (Santoro) can define exactly how big/small things need/can't be so this doesn't happen in the future.
-
Could the 2006 replace one of the BYOAC on the cocktail underlay?.
Great work.
-
Could the 2006 replace one of the BYOAC on the cocktail underlay?.
I think that's a good idea.
-
Thanks guys! this has been a great work distraction. Based on the imput here are two variations of the concept
BOTH 06-a and 06-b:
The pixel grid background--thanks Escher and Missioncontrol!
Larger 2006 on cocktail--thanks GadgetGeek and quarterback
Line thickness was increased: outlines .008, large details .006, details .003 and wood grain .002.
06-a:
The entire outter ring is raised and text debossed [light grey]
Cocktail outlines are embossed
06b:
The outter ring is like the 2004 token with text embossed
The cocktail cabinet is all raised with the detail lines debossed [light grey]
What are your thoughts???

-
Hey all,
Check out HoopstarsGarage's profile pict. (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=profile;u=6886) It would be great for the front or back. what do ya think?
-

Perhaps somebody (Santoro) can define exactly how big/small things need/can't be so this doesn't happen in the future.
According to the mint's website:
"Artists always ask how small the type can be. The answer is that if you can read a word in print, you can read it on a coin. We recommend proofing art at actual coin size because things look very different when you shrink them down."
I take this with a grain of salt though because you are correct, the date on the 05 tokens really wasn't legible.
I will take a look at the AI art from Pixel to see if I can establish the smallest line. Does anyone know where to find that in Illustrator?
(BTW previous year's threads had a lot of discussion on this topic, a good search migh yield some answers too.)
-
Also , I got an email from Pixelhugger a week ago, he had some thoughts on the tokens. I am sorry it took so long to post this here, I have been really busy in my Real LifeTM. He didn't post it here because he was worried it might affect MAME token sales, but I don't think that's an issue.
On the last three runs of tokens I think the stippling has improved the look in every case. Large areas of flat metal on these end up looking tin-like and a bit cheap. The exception to that is when an area of the design is stamped at half height (grey). In that case the flat area seems to pick up a bit of texture... maybe from the die milling process. At any rate... large background areas (as the lowest point in the design) simply don't look as good non stippled. Compare the Mame token to any of the stippled sides on the other tokens. I think the 2005 BYOAC front lucked out since the large center area was raised to half height. Just a thought to keep in mind.
I think he is right, it does seem that half-height details are more textured than other areas. Be sure you will be OK if that happens on your design if it wins. Also consider 'stipple' in large smooth areas.
Also Pixel offered this:
Also, I'd be happy to bling the final final entries so everything can be voted for on even ground. It seems interest picks waaay up when the designs move from black and white to blinged (blung?) so (unless there are dozens of entries) I wouldn't mind pitching in on that.
This would be sweet, no? Pixel truly is the man.
-
Talking to myself here... :blah:
I also think that while the two sides don't have to be exactly the same 'style,' I think the tokens would benefit however from styles that are at least 'compatible' for aestetics. I just browsed the two threads, and to my amateur eye there realy aren't any major stylistic clashes yet no matter who wins. Mahuti, Pixel, and other pros may differ with me on that though.
-
06b:
The outter ring is like the 2004 token with text embossed

What are your thoughts???
6B!!!!
Raise the cab deboss the lines. I wish I had done that on last years. Otherwise the cab will feel to outlined - made out of ridges. I struggled a lot with that decision on mine and wish I had gone the other route. Raised cab. Lowered outlines.
I love this design, but don't care for the woodgrain.
-
I will take a look at the AI art from Pixel to see if I can establish the smallest line. Does anyone know where to find that in Illustrator?
Per the mint the minimum line width is .002". I think i kept my lines to a minimum of .003 or .004. In the case of the 2005 legibility ( :-[) I think the problem isn't that any line on the number is too small IE below .002 but rather that the space between parts of the number is less than that.
Just out of curiosity what software are people desigining these in... vector based (Illustrator etc) or raster based (Photoshop/Paint Shop etc)? I only ask because raster based art is going to be very difficult to bling well unless the art is very high resolution. In my files that meant a token measurement of about 2500 pixels diameter or greater.
Santoro-
You can check dimensions under the "Transform" palette in AI.
-
Everyone, when you are done tweaking yor designs, please say so. I will be starting a summary thread soon and want to link to 'final candidates' there.
-
For what it's worth....
A while ago I had some professional Latin translations done for a project. I tossed the following into the job figuring they might come in handy at some point here.
The Game is Never Over: Ludus numquam finitus est.
I game therefore I am: Ludo ergo sum.
I really liked the idea (from the first run?) of a latin phrase on the token to parody a real coin. Though slogans have always caused a lot of dissent in these threads. Just there for anyone to use if they want.
-
I like this one, but without the woodgrain, click to enlarge.
-
yeah I agree the embosed cabinet looks better without the woodgrain
-
One suggested tweak: The player 2 (or 'opposite side player's) glass is opaque

I took the advice Pixelhugger dished out above and changed the fill/outlines of my token while tweaking the cabinet a bit more. I think most of my lines should be within spec for the mint.
I'm still stumped on a background, or if I should have one at all. Which one of these looks better? Does anyone have a suggestion for a better background?
(http://www.twistedrails.com/mamecab/tokens/2006token_v3_circles.gif) (http://www.twistedrails.com/mamecab/tokens/2006token_v3.gif)
Edit: The monitor is a darker color to represent a stipple texture.
-
Troz,
try moving the 2006 to the monitor of the circled design or place it above or below the coin door.... that way it doesn't break the circles....
of the 04, 05, and mame tokens I really like the way the mame tokens look with the circles once they are handled alot and pick up grime....
-
Moved the date to two spots to see how it looked...
-
ohhhh the monitor 2006 would go great if Joymonkey's design wins the other side
-
Monitor date is better. I'm diggin it.
I'm not sure about the way the circles show through the glass in the control panel cutouts, though- that area gets confusing.

I too am glad for all of the cocktail designs. They're all great! Best part is that there should be a cocktail on the token this year!
I tried the shooter idea like yours but it didn't work out as well on my monitor. Maybe I'll have to play with it a bit more tonight. I'm trying to keep the blocks instead of going to solid numbers.
-
I think the 2006 is fine like it is....
We don't want it too cluttered to where the date is hard to read
-
i have a idea about this cocktail. see the glass area where white circle that i drew is.
should we be able to see the pixel floor through that glass instead of just all black?

That's what I was saying when I said the glass was opaque and should be tweaked.

So, I though I would give the token thing a shot...It is the best way for my thoughts to be heard....
I thought that the token should more have an emphasis of why we are all obsessed with everything Arcade...the GLORIOUS GAMES!
I think that many of you are as obsessed with the 80's as much as me, and I want a token to create that sort of retro feel...I may not be the greatest at creating a token, but I at least hope that this spawns some new ideas...The arcade machine themed tokens are beautiful, but I was thinking something else...
So here you have it...my first stab at a token....feel free to praise it, mock it, throw a dozen harpal heads on it...I just hope this helps out!
also, I don't think I am breaking any copyright stuff since I drew my own spaceship and invader guy...right?

Troz,
I think you almost have your final proof! I cannot see anything more that needs to be done. I was gonna have a stab at designing but I think your design is pretty well what i'd be wanting anyway. Maybe next year, if I can get some creativity :laugh2:
UPDATE!
I was feeling "creative" so I had a stab of the "back side". Its a bit lame but someone may like the concept.
-

I agree. The tweaks I was considering didn't look as good as I had expected.
Santoro, my last posted design is my final.
-
This is the best design yet. The only thing that doesn't look right is the top left corner radius is too small compared to the other corners.
-
Last minute entry. More will come tonight for both front and back designs.
When is the deadline officially?
Last year I realized the contest was going on at the last minute and gave up. Not this year. I wish I would have found it sooner though, could have gotten more feedback/revisions. The saw-teeth need a bit of work.
-
the deadline date isn't officially set yet... I think Santoro was waiting it out a bit so more entries could be submitted...
-
Let's say Sunday afternoon (EDT) I am busy with work this week and won't be able to spend any time on this until then.
-
I'm willing to bling all the final submissions. If you have created your art in a vector program you can email the file as an .ai or eps to me at mitch@cutandrun.tv. If you have created your art in a raster (paint) program like PaintShop or PhotoShop, send the highest resolution image you can. Whenever possible send the original layered PSD file (PhotoShop only). Otherwise send a high quality JPEG, Pict, Tiff, Targa whatever.
This is going to be a time consuming process, so final/actual entries only.
-
wow, I am really loving the 2 cocktail designs, just amazing!
-
Can we start in with the "I like tokens, I will buy some this year" replies yet?

I just read that you did 5 layers on the previous token. Please feel free to experiment with the depths of the concept I emailed you. I feel that the screen and cabinet should being slightly deeper than the top to give the token more depth. Thanks.

Thanks! I'm glad to see that people like the design. I tweeked the far corner slightly.
Thanks everyone for all the input. I can't see any other drastic changes and this will be my final design.
-
I seem to think this has been answered already, but I cannot find it now:
When does the voting start?
Thanks!
(an earnest watcher of the designs)
-
It was supposed to be last Sunday, but I havent had time to put the polls up yet :( . Most likely I can get it done by Sat.
-
FINAL CALL FOR BLINGING!
If you want your entry blinged with the rest for voting you gotta get it to me ASAP. Here are the details posted earlier:

Disclaimer: If you only have a low resolution version of your artwork (non vector based, under 1000 pixels across, it may not bling well.

Blinged so far:

and
theese 2 have my vote damn i ahve to pick one dont i?
-
Those are AWESOME, PH!! Man... I designed one and I don't even know what to vote for!!! :)
THANX FOR DOING THIS!!
Tokens are gonna be awesome this year.. REGARDLESS of who wins..
-
I second the thanks! They all look great!
-
and
Sweet! Thanks for your efforts.
-
Sweet work pixel!! Your da man! ;)

OK, I have been busy as hell in Real Life, but I managed to get the polls created finally. Thanks for your patience!!!!!!
I have posted the polls in the main forum. They are locked until people have a day or so to double check for mistakes.
Please be sure I have
1) put your correct designs and descriptions in the thread
2) put your enrtry in the correct poll (front/back/both)
3) the latest version of your design
Also let me know if you want to change the 'name' I use to refer to your design.

sweet. After learning that PixelHugger had 5 layers last year, I added some depth that was subtle in the black and white version. Please use this as the final. Thanks Santoro!
5. highest level-outter ring and table top
4. next height-screen bezel and cabinet
3. next height-screen
2. next height-grid
1. lowest-all the outline, text, and shooter graphic.
