What is the difference between them? I've only played the US.
-

The Japanese version of Mario 2 is basically a continuation of super mario bros. 1 but much much harder. It was originally a famicom disk system game and was deemed too "hard" for american kids. So Nintendo bought the rights to another famicom disk system game called Doki Doki Panic and changed it into a Mario game. Thus Super Mario Bros 2 (or Super Mario USA in japan) as most Americans was born. If you search around a bit you can find more information on it.
-
One of my all time favorites is Castlevania II.
Sort of side scroller action and RPG at the same time. Great game.
-
Man, can't believe no one has said either Tecmo Bowl or Baseball Stars.
The system is worth it for those two games alone.
NES Open Tournament Golf
-
but for the jap version you cant play on an american system right? i read somewhere about a way to get around that aside from getting another system to play it on.
-
The games I remember loving most are:
Zelda
Mike Tyson's Punch Out (I could beat it without losing a match, and TKO Tyson in the second round)
Blaster Master
Bionic Commando
Metroid
Tecmo Bowl
Castlevania II
Guardian Legend
Super Mario 1,2,3
Mega Man II (and the others, but that one is a pinnacle)
RC Pro-AM
And many many others that don't come to mind right now. Actually, and this could be a bad memory, but I seem to remember Addams Family: Fester's Quest being quite good.
-
what about 4 player?
i think gauntlet and tmnt 2
-
Dusty Diamonds AllStar softball...
-

You are correct. Pick this one up if you run across it.

C O N T R A ;D

I have a Famicom to NES adapter to play my version of Mario 2 on my American Nes. Take a peek inside your gyromite cart and you might have one too, for awhile nintendo used famicom carts inside their american carts with an adapter.
-
would i be able to see it on the connectors or is it inside?
-
the gyromite will feel heavier than the average NES cart, so you may be able to tell be weighing it with your hand before smashing it open :P
-

Does it have regular screws or gamebit screws? If it has regular screws just pop it open and check you can't hurt anything. But if the game has gamebit screws then it won't have the adapter anyways so you don't have to worry about opening it.

You can definately tell... they're noticeably heavier.
-
so next time I head off to Rino games I'm bringing a set of scales
-
yeah really thats if i find some nes games. my gyromite has the gamebit type screws so ill try looking for another copy that has it. if it does i just take it out and insert it inside another cart right? does it pop out or do i not to solder?
-
Here is what the inside of a NES cart with a famicom adapter inside. As you can see the famicom game (60 pin) is on top and it plugs into the adapter like a NES game plugs into a game genie. I got my famicom adapter with my mario 2 japan cart on an ebay auction for like $7.
check out this article if you want to know how to spot a gyromite cart that has an adapter in it.

alright thanks i know a store that might have gyromites so ill look for the darker robot and try and snag one then madd imports.
-
Guardian Legend - great RPG/Schmup/Fighter combo game.
Castlevania (All of them)
Zelda (I like I and II)
MegaMan (Mindless Fun)
TMNT (First one, the non arcadeone is hard)
Punch Out (Everyone always asks if you have this)
Hrm...not sure what else.
Lolo's always good for some fun :)
-
rc pro am...strangely addictive...
blaster master?
i like the world cup/super spike volleyball combo cart. even though it was insanely easy. still good fun with a friend! never got a chance to play with 4 players though...(or were they 4 player games? can't remember.)
-
Well i bought a copy of gyromite and it had the adapter so now im out 2.11 (includes tax) and want t make a conversion like the article forbidden showed me. obviously the mario 2 but anything else.
-
R.C. Pro Am
Mike Tyson's Punch out
Gradius

Glad to hear you found a winning gyromite, I've been looking for one for awhile but haven't been so lucky. I don't really need it but it would be nice to have just because...
-
I've never played Gyromite. :-\ Never.
It's just one of those bizarre things in life. Hard to explain.
-
You didn't miss much. I have a couple ROBs but I use them as bookends.
-
the gamecrazy i went to had 4 copies and i only checked one and it was the right one.
it seems more of a gimmick then something fun. it added nothing to gameplay except to distract you and make you spend more for the game. though id use them as bookends too it would just look cool.
im trying to build up my collection dispite all the roms, emulators and the revolution. its different because you physically have the game. though when i get a psp its going to be different but when im home its classic console. but its hard to find some of the games since theres only ojne store i know of in new jersey that sells the old games but their selection is limited. there are more stores just that i havent been looking.
but thanks everyone for the picks.
-
One problem with emulators is timing. For example I have Parrapa the Rapper for a PSX emulator on my Xbox and I can't play it cos that came requires spot on timing and it doesn't have it. And I swear Mike Tyson's Punch Out is just a little bit off for my NES emulator on the Xbox. It's close, and I'm still good, but I'm just not nearly as good as I am on a regular NES and I don't think it's just the controller (though it might be).
-
Same with the DC, I can't beat Mike Tyson's Punch Out in the emu but I can beat it on the cart.
-
Baseball Stars and Ikari Warriors.
-
If you like puzzle games try PipeDreams BomberMan, Lemmings and of course Tetris. I also recommend Quix but I've never seen it run properly through emulation.
-
Man, can't believe no one has said either Tecmo Bowl or Baseball Stars.
They were 2 of my favorites too. My brothers and I spent way too many hours on those games.
-
I just wish Baseball Stars had better memory. You spend a whole week building the ultimate team and then WHAM the cart loses it.

replace the battery
-
It's not a battery problem, they were like that NIB. When your NES is blinky, and they ALL are blinky at one point or another, the power cycling to the cart erases the EPROM. Happens to all carts with EPROM but Baseball Stars was always very susceptible to that.
-
i was going to say that you could replace the battery but i figured that wasnt the case.
is it possible to have the memory ported to a pc like what they do for roms for emulators?
-
Anything is possible, but it would be stupidly impractical. I guess the closest you could come with even somewhat reasonable means would be to desolder the eeprom, read it into a PC with an eeprom reader, solder in a socket, then just take the chip out and read it into the PC every time you wanted a backup.

My fav NES games:
Megaman 1-6 (esp 2)
Lifeforce
Battletoads
Excite-Bike
Ninja Gaiden 1-3

To a less extend:
Metriod
Rush 'n Attack
Techmo Superbowl
Robo Warrior
Captain Skyhawk
Gradius
Thunder and Lightning
Duck Hunt (Gotta love the zapper!)
Short Order / Eggsplode (Eggsplode is kind of like whack-o-mole with the powerpad; only with bombs and chickens!)

-
One of my absolute favorites for the NES console was Ultima: Quest of the Avatar. The NES port of the game was even better graphically than the original PC version that Origin released. It's still one of my favorite RPGs to date.
-

vice project of doom
shatter hand
S.C.A.T
shadow of the ninja
Super spike v-ball is also good with 4 players
star tropics both 1-2

I found shatterhand to be a great game. Rather hard though

...NES Open Tournament Golf...
Of all the hundreds of golf games out there and the dozens that I own, NES Open still gets the most playing time at our house...
-
JAWS
LOL I wasted so many hours playing that game! I actually beat it once. ;D
-
If I remember correctly, you are not supposed to power off the NES normally when playing Baseball Stars. You are supposed to push and hold the reset button, then power off while holding it down. It's supposed to decrease the probability of the memory getting wiped.

I always did this with Zelda as well and never lossed my game...could have been superstition though :)
