If they give the bad ass guy more than five minutes of actual film time and a fight that lasts longer than four that doesn't end up with him/her dead it should all be good.
Bonus points if they actually introduce him/her in the first ten minutes of the film, kill someone in the next ten then go on to create absolute mayhem throughout the rest of the film.
I'll have the producers child if they never, ever, introduce another character like Jar Jar.
-
I was holding out reserved hope that the new Star Wars films couldn't be any worse than the prequels. But based on the teaser, I think I'd rather watch the one made with legos.
<Fanboi rant>
Why the *krunk* do they keep screwing around with lightsabers? Stop with the bloody lightsabers already. The prequels had far too much lightsaber crap and now they are finding new ways to muck them up (really? lightsabers need crossguards now?).
I realize they are just catering to the fanboys, but after the double-bladed Darth Maul saber in Episode I, it's just gotten stupid. I'd love to see an entire Star Wars movie with no lightsabers. That would be a revelation.

True, the Lego version is pretty faithful with the matte boxes around the ships.

I dunno, custom lightsabers always made sense to me. Since a jedi is suppose to build their own, why would they all be identical weapons? Of course, that one does seem a bit weird. A weeble wobble R2 unit is kinda odd, too.

It looks too "wavy" to be a real lightsaber. Maybe it's a custom job, done by Shady Lee. :dunno
-
:duckhunt Would explain why the release date is still a year away. It takes time to ship custom work over from China.

It would makes sense, especially if someone uses castaway parts or doesn't have a full understanding of the inner workings of their um... light saber. A power source that isn't clean enough for example.
In fact, it looks exactly like the kind of overkill that would be typical of someone who really doesn't understand their saber. Kind of like how we get a number of first timers who come on this board and attempt to plan (or worse build) a CP that has to have every ---goshdarn--- button under the sun, eg CrapMAME #10. The crossguards on this one look like they're not quite powered up. Like they're not quite fully powered up after the main blade goes up. Like a dim bulb or something.
Personally, I think a hoop, like a Spanish sword, would be far more cooler.
-
The guy with the cloak on is Luke Skywalker who has turned to the dark side. He is the protagonist throughout the film. :yawn
-
^Makes no sense.
Protagonist = good guy
Antagonist = bad guy
If the above is correct wouldn't he be the antagonist?
-
In this movie you cheer for the dark side. The good side of the force is nothing but a bully, hunting down that poor sith lumberjack who is just trying to cut down firewood. :yawn
-

Yeah, but when they do stuff like this it's not about the mythos and more about "how can we sell more action figures and T-shirts"?
That was what I always hated about Darth Maul. He was simply created to look "cool" and perform a flashy fight; no dept to the character whatsoever.
I'm already worried we'll get the same shite again...
-
Yeah I really hope justice is done to the franchise. And Abrams doesnt carry on ten years from now about how the reason he did Star Wars so that he could have the money to fund his own pet project.

I don't know, I think he'll do ok, better then the prequel trilogy.
The sad thing is the bar has been set so low, even Uwe Boll could probably do better.
-
I have hope for the new trilogy and this is why, believe it or not Disney. I think Star Wars did so well originally because it is modern mythology. All good mythology follows certain rules and forms throughout pretty much every culture in every time. There are certain concepts we as humans seem hardwired to. Lucas had his college mythology professor as an adviser on the originals. He was consciously crafting mythology. He forgot that on the prequels and was too wrapped up in how he finally had the tech and budget to make the movies LOOK the way he always envisioned them but forgot about the story (and the fact that he can't direct).
Disney on the other hand has been cranking out modern mythology very successfully for decades now. If anyone can get it back to that feel I think they can. I'm not a huge fan of Disney, but they know what they are doing.
As for the crossguard sabre...I'm not a huge fan, if they wanted to do it the energy should at least meet so the quillon isn't just sliced off.
Here is my favorite take on the sabre.
PS I think it is Luke too
-
I thought the whole stoyline after the trilogy was Luke turned evil in Jedi at the moment the emperor goaded him into taking a swing at him. Han and Leia get married and have twins and they're packed full of the force and then Luke gets good again at the end.
I heard that scenario at least 10,000 times in the 90s.
:dunno

:dunno
That's the Timothy Zahn telling isn't it? Takes Luke a few books to turn totally evil but IIRC there is a sweet scene in one where he lays the lightsaber on the ground, goes and hides, then uses the force to spin the lightsaber like a buzzsaw and fly it around a building chopping everyone in half.

I enjoyed them, but I knew there was no chance they would get used for the movie.

Whoever made that recreation did a great job! Seems the topic of this new trailer is the "great sword" lightsaber. Any thoughts on this lightsaber? I have heard some people say it ruined their childhood, and even Stephen Colbert did a special on his show explaining how this saber hand guard was possible. It is worth the quick watch, could add some laughter in your day!

Last boner I ever got over Star Wars was when the Xbox hit $150 and Knights of the Old Republic came out. I thought setting it in the same universe but way in the past was a nice cop out to play around in the universe but avoid mentioning movie characters. Really enjoyed that game, though I didn't realize there was a level cap and had to use a trainer to beat the last boss - I had frittered away those midicholorians on stupid skills. Some fun glitches to be had, damn near had a heart attack when that galaxy droid showed up and I thought my save game was ruined.
Prequel movies were dumb as hell because you already knew everyone was going to survive.
Wikipedia concurs that I'm thinking of the Zahn books. Never seen those but the storyline certainly made the rounds.
-
I love those people who scream that their childhood was ruined. They have to realize that the canon has far reached the original trilogy. Books, games, and comics were all, I can assume, referenced for the new movies. Wookieepedia even makes reference to the 'crosssaber' in the main lightsaber article. It seems that it has made an appearance in three different places of the Star Wars canon. That is what people need to realize. In the Star Wars universe there is no set standards for lightsaber building. It is to the discretion of the wielder. Making each lightsaber as unique as its master.
And I also find it funny that people are up in arms about a black storm trooper. We have no idea why he is in the suit. For all we know he could have been in disguise. And, some of the more knowledgeable fan boi's can correct me, but I believe I read some where that with the dwindling numbers of Clone troopers being lost due to war the Empire started to recruit young men for employment. As yes. Here:
"By the time the Galactic Civil War began in earnest, Jango Fett's clones were heavily supplanted by clones based on a variety of templates around 9 BBY,[13] followed shortly after by enlisted Humans.[19] Thus, the Fett clones were ironically reduced to a minority status after years of virtually filling the stormtrooper ranks in its entirety. According to a stormtrooper's entry log in the 501st Journal, none of the Fett clones were ever truly able to come to terms with serving alongside recruits and different clones, all of whom were disdainfully dubbed as the "new guys."[13] Commander Cody, a first generation clone of Jango Fett and a veteran of the Clone Wars, found stormtrooper recruits to be absolutely intolerable. Due to the significant decrease in the Imperial Military's operational effectiveness and his own feelings of nostalgia over the Republic's "army of one man," Cody viewed enlisted troopers as incompetent idiots, all of whom he would have gladly sacrificed for just one real clone trooper.[19]
Despite the influx of new troopers from various sources, the ranks remained dominated by Human males, thus reflecting the New Order's Human High Culture. By 0 BBY, roughly one-third of the stormtroopers were clones based on the Fett template, while recruits steadily became the majority within the Stormtrooper Corps.[20] Service in the Stormtrooper Corps was open to both Human men and women, but female stormtroopers were an extremely rare sight under Palpatine's reign and on average there were never more than three female stormtroopers within a whole legion.[1].[21] In spite of this disparity, some female troopers served in elite units, such as the Coruscant Guard.[22]"
And I don't know why everyone is getting so crazy over this guy. The same thing happened in Return of the Jedi. Vader was in a black suit and voiced by James Earl Jones (a black actor). Then by the end of Jedi he has his mask removed and he's a 'crusty old white man.' And to leave you with some final thoughts here is an excerpt from Chasing Amy.

-
I thought the whole stoyline after the trilogy was Luke turned evil in Jedi at the moment the emperor goaded him into taking a swing at him.
:dunno
I've read almost all the books but my memory is hazy so bear with me. From what I recall there was a comic book series from Dark Horse where Luke went to the Dark Side but came back. In the novels (including the Zahn books) I don't recall him ever becoming evil. The main point of those books was Luke trying to rebuild the Jedi Order without knowing how to do it. The Empire destroyed all records of the Jedi so he really had no blueprint to go by. He also realizes that Yoda and Ben basically trained him as a one-time-use weapon pointed at the Emporer. This stuff was all fleshed out in the books before EP1 came out and gave us Padawans and Medichlorians.
And I also find it funny that people are up in arms about a black storm trooper. We have no idea why he is in the suit. For all we know he could have been in disguise.
I've not paid any attention to the "uproar" over a black storm trooper. For what it is worth I assumed he was a hero in disguise. In the books they make a point that the Emperor hated aliens which is why in the movies their army was only made up of humans. Maybe some overzealous fanboys assume that meant they were rascist as well? :dunno

I agree, well said.
It's been a few years since I've read the Thrawn trilogy and I only read about 5 or 6 books after those three (the novel expanded universe is huge now). I don't recall Luke going evil but one of Leia's kid's Jacen falls to the Dark Side.
But it has been widely stated that the expanded universe is officially thrown out...so who knows.
My one buddy is waiting for the Lightsabre Axe....that would have set the internet into quite the uproar....
-
But it has been widely stated that the expanded universe is officially thrown out...so who knows.
Exactly. Nothing in the comics, books, video games and cartoons is considered canon anymore. It might as well be fan fiction at this point.

Vader has almost become a representation for the Star Wars universe. It used to resemble something but now it is pieced together by non organic parts to make it survive. Not live.

If it weren't for the prequels, that lightsaber might be kinda cool. But the prequels ruined lightsabers, so now it's just gimmicky.

I'm gonna go on a limb and say that dark Jedi isn't Luke. Mostly because I don't think Luke would ever have a need to retool his lightsaber style. Would require him to fight in a very different way.
JJ would have to tread carefully turning luke to the dark side. Anakin's transition wasn't believable and his whole backstory was easily the biggest downfall of the prequels. Luke's dip towards the dark side was very compelling in Empire; he was trying to save his friends lives. Everyone watching wanted him to do the same thing. Lucas didn't quite give any compelling reasons to murder Jedi babies.

I was a huge fan of the "Lucasfilm authorized" books, and even read the long winded story behind how they got permission to kill off Chewy from Lucas himself, and how every one of the stories were approved before they could be published. So I took them as the official storyline and I loved them all, at least right up until about the time of the "young jedi" series where I stopped reading them altogether. Then the prequels came out and completely and utterly destroyed the entire Star Wars universe that tons of talented authors had created. Before that I was a fan of Lucas. I worked in the home audio business for a number of years, and just about everyone I worked with had been to Skywalker Ranch to go through the THX school. The man was a legend to me, not just because of movies like Star Wars or Indiana Jones, but also because of his pioneering work in special effects and audio.
When Star Wars Galaxies came out, I was there for the beta and played religiously. The game was insanely buggy, but it was STAR WARS in every way, INCLUDING how a jedi was super rare. I think that was the best part of the game, there wasn't a million jedi running around... it was just a game set in the universe that had been created by Lucas and filled in by some really talented story tellers over the years. For every ten thousand players, one *might* reach Jedi, and nobody knew how to go about getting there. Then they caved to the masses and made it so anyone could be a Jedi, the game got hacked so the economy went to hell, then Sony took control from the development team and rewrote the whole thing and from what I heard it was worse than ever after that. I quit long before that all happened.
Not too long after that the movies came out, and since then I have hated Lucas for not hiring someone who could direct or write. I realize it was his to destroy, and that in his mind the billions of dollars he made make it a success, but while he created a new empire of his own with the merchandising, he destroyed the universe it was set in.. Worst of all though, he destroyed what I think was really great about Star Wars - the rarity. People loved the movies but aside from some action figures and models, there was NOTHING for several years.. no home version, no movie channels playing it all day, no way to get a hold of that stuff, and it made it special. When a TV special would come out, EVERYONE watched it because it was FRIGGIN STAR WARS! I played that buggy game because it was FRIGGIN STAR WARS! When a new movie came out, it was sold out for weeks because it was FRIGGIN STAR WARS! And now you can't go a day without seeing or hearing something "star wars", so it is just another brand now, and a brand from a fictional universe that has several time lines, none of which match up, without any kind of coherence or order to them whatsoever. Star wars is just about light sabers, jedi powers, and cute alien races that make kids laugh..
I still like the idea of a decent star wars movie, and I always enjoy anything high budget on the big screen, whether the story sucks ass or not. Cool effects and interesting ideas fuel my imagination, but that is about as far as it goes. I will go to see the new movies, and a part of me will hope they will be decent, but the "star wars storyline" is dead to me, so bring on the funky light sabers and fun to watch scenes where those shiny hand held laser swords are twirling around and everyone is a force enhanced martial artist. Bring on the wheezy robots and painted faces and old dudes with dildo looking lightsabers, and I will still spend my $12.50 to get a ticket to watch it. And when it is over, I will shrug and smile and say "cool, what comes out next week?" then go have a beer and watch a tv show.

dkersten: sadly I agree with you, it was Lucas' story/world to destroy. I was angry when he threw out all of the hard creative work others had put into the expanded universe after profiting from that work. He opened the playground for others and then when it was convenient he threw it all away.
-

I don't understand why this is an issue. Just because they "threw it out" doesn't mean you can derive pleasure and enjoyment from those stories. Not a knock against people who feel that way, but it's not like they rounded up all those books and DVDs and burned them all.

They didn't burn those books but they did severely reduce their value. I read the books to expand on the Star Wars cannon. I invested a lot of time into reading those books and like I said in my earlier post the material has been turned into fan fiction. I have zero interest in fan fiction.
That being said I'm somewhat indifferent at this point and can understand why they are ignoring the books. Killing Chewbacca was a bad idea--especially when it is a character than can be in SW movies forever since the actor is not critical. Also IMHO Han's character was rarely handled properly in the books. Also why would the movie producers want to handcuff themselves to story lines only known by a small percentage of the fans?
-
Reducing canon to fan fiction is a serious offense, you see.
-
Reducing canon to fan fiction is a serious offense, you see.
Agreed. On par with deleting old threads.
-
To each their own, but I enjoy a good epic story that fits together nicely. When it starts contradicting or ignoring something that happened, I lose interest and can no longer feel passionate about it.
For example, I used to really enjoy reading W.E.B Griffin. He writes some great historical fiction and I didn't discover him until he had four well developed series of books, so I was able to really dive in and spend many hours reading continuous story lines. His series "Badge of Honor" was fantastic, all about the Philadelphia police. But the main character in this series was a cop in the late 70's. He had the CB radio in his car, had to find a payphone to call things in, etc. Then suddenly in the next book he is using a laptop, has a cell phone, etc, yet he is the same age as the last book and talking about events that happened recently even though the stories in those events took place in a setting 3 or 4 decades prior. The disconnect screwed the whole thing up for me. And he didn't just do that in that series, he did it in most of them.. So I had to stop reading his stuff. It just screwed up the whole story for me. To me it is like starting a single movie with Tom Cruise as the actor portraying the main character, and halfway through the movie the character is now portrayed by Jim Carrey, but it is only the next day, and nobody seems to notice except me, the guy in the audience going "wait, wtf just happened?"
Sure, you can enjoy some of the stories on their own, but it was the whole story that made it really great, and that is gone now. The happiest I have been with "Star Wars" in the last 15 years was when Lucas sold it to Disney because now I know that any movies coming out in the future will more than likely have dialogue that doesn't sound like it was written by a 3rd grader, and probably have actors that can.. well, act. And ANYONE could direct better than Lucas. Anyone. The red solo cup on my desk could direct better than him, and probably write a better script.
-
I thought I was immune to Star Wars hype after four disappointing sequels in a row, and several decades of increasingly tacky merchandising, but I must admit, I did get a bit of a kick out of seeing the Millenium Falcon swooping over the planet at the end of the trailer. The rest of it just made me shrug.
-
I'm just waiting for this trilogies version of Boba Fett.
Jango Fett
Boba Fett
Not-gonna-make-it-to-the-end-of-the-third-trilogy Fett
My biggest concern if that like some many action movies these days - they showed all the good parts in the teaser. The rest of the movie will just support those scenes.
-
.
-
Well, now that Lucas made every soldier in the clone wars a clone of Fett, they will bring him back, even if it is a different Fett.. Just another place where the previous "official story" changed. In the books, Boba Fett survived being eaten by the sarlacc, and went on to have many more stories written about him. I am sure they will change all that, however, and come up with something about the force and some sith who rescued him, or just call him another clone blah blah blah..
-
.
-
Look at it this way...the bar is set pretty low after the prequels...any movie likely will shine in comparison.
-
It's okay, admit it, everyone kinda liked Phantom Menace when you first walked out of that theater.
-
Disney wouldn't have dropped the Billions if they didn't think they could pull it off
I hate referencing reddit but from the sounds of it JJ and Disney are butting heads on some things. Which might be a good thing. I can for see Disney trying to make the movie into a wholesome piece while JJ is giving it the justice it deserves.
And truth be told I thought the prequels were 10x better than the original trilogy.
...Seriously. Loved 'em. The prequels. Not the originals. The Ewoks defeating Jango Fett clones at the Battle of Endor. C'mon.
-
...Seriously. Loved 'em. The prequels. Not the originals. The Ewoks defeating Jango Fett clones at the Battle of Endor. C'mon.
Haha, Yeah, that is as insane as something like an 8 year old defeating an entire robotic invasion army and a armed spacestation using only a small spacecraft he didn't know how to fly.

Didn't anyone believe in putting up the ships shields? If I saw a bunch of enemy planes coming at my ship I would inherently put up my shields as a defense. Someone got fired that day.
And they completely ruined force run for me in the Phantom Menace. It was done poorly. It took me about 35 minutes to realize they were trying to show force powers. Pure drabble.
And why wasn't the story written to show Palpatine influencing Anakin more? It was just like 'BOOM!'. And Anakin was like 'Oh. I'm evil now. Time to go kill some kids.' God dammit these new movies better not suck.
If they do I'll be all like...

Fett survived many years after ROTJ, There's quite a good chance that he'd be alive during this trilogy. I wouldn't doubt you'll see him at some point as he's a massive fan favourite.
The entire "expanded universe" was RETCON'D by Lucasfilm / Disney.
So.. no, Boba Fett did not survive ROTJ. :)

You wanna see millions of devote fans rage quit a franchise because the fate is reversed on one of the top 3 bad ass characters in said franchise?
The devote fans (fanboys) will watch whatever comes out. Jar Jar is proof of that enough. And the super weak backstory of Boba Fett (the most bad ass bounty hunter in the galaxy is a clone? and his father figure got punked by a Jedi in like 10 seconds of screen time? Really?)
