I've been trying to think of a theme for my new project and I keep coming back to this idea of "Girls of Street Fighter" or "Fighting Girls" cab with the graphics being themed on all the fighting game girlies.
I've made the decision to base the cab design on the Global Arcade Classics machine like a few others in here because I like the look of those and I want something smaller than my last (giant quad machine).
I ordered the monitor (Makvision 2929D-72) and got the computer humming nicely with groovymame and Hyperspin. Now I just have to build the cab.
I built it already in 3d and even mocked up some possible graphics just grabbing stuff off the web. I'm not completely sold on the graphics yet. Let me know what you guys think....
*EDIT: I renamed the Subject because I'm not doing "Girls of Street Fighter" but rather an overall Street Fighter inspired machine.

I like it - but don't Ken and Ryu need some surgery to meet the requirements?
-
Nah, Chun-Li ken ryu are all sisters, some had to many steroids
Cabinet looks nice, good luck :)
-
Nice render... Like the raytracing! What software?
-
Dudes with fetishes about cartoony asian women committing violence against themselves are creepy...
-
How ironic, I find dudes that don't like cartoony asian women commiting violence to be creepy.
Yeah, obviously I just threw that marquee up there for it. I'm still not sold. I might do my own retro thing.. I was thinking about it over lunch.. maybe do space invaders but as rendered 3d particles (do like thousands of them flying up the cab side). Dunno yet. I thought the girls would be fun, colorful and light-hearted.. not creepy. ::)

+1
-
replace ryu+ken marquee with random SF girls??
nice render.
-
needs more cleavage
-
More Chun Li. ;D
-
Kasumi or Mai :P
-
Dump the guys in the marquee. I agree get some ladies in there especially if you calling the cab Girls of Street Fighter

He said above that he just threw the guys up there for the render....Did you really think he is going to have dudes on his girls of street fighter cabinet?
-
I dig the art, but if I think you should at least make it more than just street fighter girls. You can't forget the Darkstalkers girls. But I totally know what you mean with the debate... I'm constantly daydreaming about another project and I'd be torn between a rendition of something already existing or something original that looks like it could have been a real arcade. I always loved the crystal castles art.
-
It has begun.
I cut the 2 sides out today but they need a lot of sanding to get them even. I still haven't decided on the graphics. I need to do some renders and see if something catches my fancy... otherwise it's going to be fighting chicks.
Hey Martijn... your Street Fighter build is what inspired mine!

Yeah i noticed a resemblance. Makvision 2929D-72 is a 29 Inch? Nice size :applaud:
Paint or laminate?
Good luck ;)
-
I think I'm going to follow yours and do laminate. That has such a finished look to it. Besides, I painted my last one and i want to do something different.
The rounded cabinet has been quiet a bit more difficult than the straight edge one. It's more work but I'm not as crazy anxious to get it done like I was last time so I'm enjoying the build itself.
I'm looking for a router bit that can cut my t-molding groove now. This is going to be another challenge with the rounded edge.. how to cut a consistent groove. :dunno

Don't worry about it. Just go slowly and it won't be any more trouble than a straight edge.

I think he is going to have dudes all over his girls of street fighter.
-
Snk one side and Capcom on the other habba habba!! >:D
-
Would there be any reason to laminate the sides that are going to have printed graphics? Wouldn't you just be covering the laminate?
-

I always wondered about that ???
-
well when i laminate the side it gives a smooth surface, any wood imperfections of gapes are gone. its a strong surface like a kitchen table, that gives a professional feel when you touch the artwork and surface , also easy to pull back the art and reapply.
-
I might have screwed myself for laminate. I'm building with 3/4" MDF so if I add a laminate, will my t-molding not cover the edges... or do they make a larger t-molding for this event?
-
well mdf here is 18mm and tmolding is 19mm with the laminate is perfect flush. artwork is so thin it wont be a problem
-
If it is not wide enough you could always order 13/16" or even 1" t-molding from these guys: http://www.t-molding.com (http://www.t-molding.com). Then if it is to wide you could get a quad trimmer from fastcap to trim off whatever is overhanging like so: Quad Trimmer With T-Molding (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Yv99mmzmHA#ws)
-
Great! Thanks for the video. That didn't look hard at all. :applaud:

That is neat! I'd just love to see it do a corner though...
-
I just asked them to make a video showing corner cutting and a close up of the trimmed t-molding, let's hope they deliver!
-
An obvious way would be to set it on a straight area, cut it, then place it in the corner (at least it sounds like that would work).
-
I have one of these quad trimmers. I was going to use it to trim the 3/4" tmolding off of my 3/4" plywood. I'll try and take some pictures of some test cuts this evening.

Well yeah that would work I suppose, but I meant more for things like a curve - both inside and outside curves might be too much for this tool.
-
needs more cleavage

I'm building this one around the monitor so everything it test fit against the bezel here. I've got the t-mold routed in and the support pieces on.

I've also placed the monitor mount brackets in (2x4s) and placed the monitor on to test fit. Do you guys think I need more support for this heavy monitor? I could build more of a frame inside but is that necessary?

Thanks for posting that.
In my tests with 5/8 plywood there is a bit of a gap after laminating. That quad trimmer might be just the ticket.

Assembled the body and painted. I decided to hand off the controller work to Dream Home Arcades to complete... I'm just too lazy and they are suppose to be the best so I'm sure they'll do way better than I would have.
I'll have the graphics this week. I'm printing them at my family's print shop. I want to give them a plug here. The place is called Carolina Canvas www.carolinacanvas.com (http://www.carolinacanvas.com) and they are great (and cheap). They specialise in large format printing. Mine will be printed on a thin, self adhesive vinyl that is UV protected so it should last forever.
Here's the cab so far...

Did someone post a pic of themself with a girl HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

Home for Thanksgiving so I'm getting my graphics printed. My family has a printing shop that specializes in large format printing www.CarolinaCanvas.com (http://www.CarolinaCanvas.com). I'm having the graphics printed on a self adhesive, uv protected vinyl film and it looks amazing. The theme will be more general Street Fighter versus series rather than "girls" of street fighter. I warmed up the colors on this piece to match the rest.
Here's a picture of one of the printers doing one side of my side art. I'm blanking on the original artist's name but I should definitely give him proper credit.

Back in California and putting the graphics on today.
For a large graphic, you want to line it up first (with the adhesive back still on). It's best if you can lay the cab on it's side because it's easier to keep the print in place. Once you got it where you want it cut some excess off (leave about an inch on each side just in case you accidentally move it while pulling the adhesive back off.
Pulling the back off is a two man job (I don't have a picture of this because I needed the camera man :p ). You'll want to stick down a small piece to anchor it. One person should be pulling the back off from underneath very slowly while the other person uses a squeegee to push the paper down and toward the person pulling the back off. The guy with the squeegee is also making sure there are no air bubbles under the graphic.
Once you get the entire thing stuck down, you should still have that inch or so overlap. That's easily cut off with an exacto knife or even box cutters. Make sure you use a new, sharp blade and be careful with it. Place the blade on the edge and move the knife consistently with the blade as flat as possible. This part isn't nearly as hard as it looks... just cut with confidence and if you have to stop, turn the knife away from the cab.

T-molding is super easy so I'm not going to explain that. :p

that artwork is pretty sweettt!!!! nice work.

did some redraw that street fighting collection(cammy) art in vector? looks solid

That's some damn hot artwork!

No, the art was already print resolution and my brother's shop specializes in enlarging stuff like that so he worked his magic and it looks perfect. This way is much better than converting to vector because the graphic maintains the proper gradations of the original which I personally much prefer. If the art doesn't have very many gradients then vector conversion is a good option.
Thanks for all the compliments! This has been a super fun project.

Was searching for some Street Fighter artwork and came across this image:

Pretty cool Udon artwork. I instantly thought of your cabinet. Nice work so far!
-
Those Udon dudes are awesome!
Ok.. here's a picture of the controller. I outsourced this to Dream Home Arcades. What's funny is they forgot the spinner (top picture) and 5 minutes later he sent me the second picture. :applaud:

This weekend I'm finishing things up by assembling the cab. Sorry it's so dirty in the pictures.
Test fit the marquee plexi and made sure the light works behind it:
Put the coin door in and powered the lights from the computer:

Got the graphics printed for the marquee:

Installed the speakers (these were broken out of a brand new box.. 2 tiny speakers and a sub):

Wow, very nice cab :applaud:
The artwork is just ...amazing !!!
-
Thanks!
It's pretty much done now. Got the controller in, the plexiglass is in and everything is hooked up and running well. I still want to shell windows xp but that should be really easy.
So here's the final result!

Dude, it looks really good! Much nicer design than some of the other Street Fighter cabinets I've seen posted here lately.
Though I could have gone without the tron stick, kinda distracts from the cabinet. But then again, I'm not one for frankenpanels, I usually opt for less controls and multiple cabinets, versus one cabinet that does it all. But if you're happy, that's great!
It looks tight man. :applaud:
-
This turned out great. Very proportional. It looks store bought.
The screws holding the plexi down are a great and unique touch.
-
What's the height of this cab? Thanks
-
Looks great! Nice artwork and great shape on our cab. :applaud: :applaud:
-
Thanks for the compliments! :D Sorry it took me so long to respond... I've been playing video game! :duckhunt
Erik, it is almost exactly 6 foot tall.
-
That is a great looking cab. I gotta agree with everyone else about the amazing art work.
I plan to check out that site you linked to.
Again, great job!
:applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

Wow, I think you may have finally convinced me to do full side art on my next cab- that looks amazing!!! Love the contour of the upper part of the cab, too. Great job!
