Lets keep this arcade only, and yes this is a direct ripoff of popular movies that suck.
Pop games that suck
1. golden tee - the only thing more boring then watching golf is watching someone play golden tee
2. UMK3 - Lets face it, MKII was the pinnacle of this series
3. Primal Rage - Anyone remember the hype behind this game? Remember how the game just completely disappointed you?
-
All SF/MK style fighters.
-
Sonic
-
No way Chad cmon now. Not ALL of em suck. I agree with Donk though, 2 was indeed the best. I always thought the Silent Scope games were super overrated. Always got a case of eye strain even if I played it for 2 mins...
-
I know people will hate me for this, but I always felt Killer Instinct was way over rated. I never really cared for it.
I prefer ALL Capcom fighters...Sorry Chad =)
As for MK I agree that II was the last good one. MK3 was too jokey...II introduced some comedy elements but 3 just went overboard with it...

I agree with you Bootay. I fired up ol Killer Instinct in MAME the other day and MAN was that game terrible. You gotta keep in mind when we played the game though we were kids.

Hey...Donkey Kong was what I played as a kid and I still like it. Not sure age really has anything to do with it. Killer Instinct came out when I was in my early 20s anyway. I really wasn't a kid, but I just never liked it. At the arcade near my house there was a KI and 2 machines down was X-Men Vs. Street Fighter...that's the one I played instead. But that's all I could hear was the screeching of the werewolf coming from the KI machine. LOL
-
call of duty series. its a joke compared to REAL online shooters like MGO.
first time I played COD it was pretty hilarious. I kept saying to myself "THATS IT?? this is supposed to be fun and I am supposed to keep playing for more than a day??"
-
SNAAKE - 5 minutes in the penalty box for not mentioning an arcade game.
-
LOL..yea it's supposed to be arcade only. maybe there should be one for consoles separate. :)
-
Too easy with console games... There are way more popular console games that suck then popular arcade games that suck.
bad dudes
-
oh I didnt read anyone's post. was too excited about hating on COD. seriously those games are really lame/boring.
-
I also agree on the Golden Tee...although I am not a sports guy so I tend to not like most sport games.
-
Every single fighter and FPS ever made except the Simpsons and TMNT.
-
Blitz sucked too IMO.
-
I think all the MK's were overrated and am willing to take my lumps from those who think otherwise. But I understand the appeal of I and II - III was a step backwards and Ultimate was a gross "double-dip".
Also, pretty much most games made in the last 10 - 15 years. Too many clones of each other: fighting, driving, shooting (obviously excepting the NFL Blitz and Golden Tee machines). The last semi-unique arcade game that I can even really remember in that time frame was Gauntlet Legends. I also wanted to give props to Crazy Taxi but it's still, ostensibly, a driving game.
-
Every Konami arcade fighter. (*winks at Saint*)
They were just mindless button mashing with no skill required, relied on continues, and the graphics were behind the times.
-
virtual fighter.....what an awfull game....it really suck, grafics, moves and all....just ugly
-
Pacman Jr with it's half pinball half arcade game and no fun
-
Pacman Jr with it's half pinball half arcade game and no fun
You mean Baby Pac-man.
-
No Mortal Kombat has ever been good. The suck starts at the title - ooh sub a K for the C in combat . . . clever!
Also +1 on Sonic if that's ever been in the arcade. There's never been a good Sonic game unless like Mario and Sonic at the Olympics was any good (and even counts as a Sonic game, which seems doubtful).
-
I'll probably get shot for this but....
Not a specific game but I never really liked rail shooters. You know the kind I'm talking about. You're on a fixed path through the game and the goal is to blast anything that moves into giblets.
I get the idea and I admit I played a couple of them for a while (generally on the console though). I just don't see the long term appeal. I think I'm spoiled by games by the likes of Quake, Duke Nukem 3D and Half-Life (not arcade) where you actually have some degree of freedom and exploration (for what it's worth).
The second type are the "Pick Your Own Death" adventure type games. If I mention Space Ace, that should be enough.
The problem with those games is well... re-playability really. There really isn't a whole lot there. Push up here. Push down here. Push left there but if you're too late you'll die. Once you burn through the game there really isn't a whole lot of reason to play through again, hence the lack of appeal for me. This unlike say.... SFII where you have the potential to play against (hopefully) a good opponent or like SMB where you can make up some random goal depending on how drunk you are.
While games like Space Ace are reasonably fun the first time through, the game starts sucking major if the damn op on that owns the circuit is slow to change the cabs out on his route.
-
The Sonic games on the Genesis were good.
I get the point on the Dragons Lair/Space Ace type games. But for their time the graphics were unlike anything anyone ever seen so it was amazing and exciting (at the time).
20+ years later they aren't very impressive. But I have a love for them just because of growing up around them.
As for Baby Pac-Man....the problem with that game is I was constantly trying to get it to go to Pinball mode. I didn't care about the "Pac-Man" part of the game because by the time that game came out I was way over Pac-Man. I actually wouldn't mind owning a Baby Pac-Man cab.
-
The Sonic games on the Genesis were good.
No they weren't. They were retarded fast and that novelty put stars in people's eyes. The gameplay is awful. The music and sound effects are like having your brain run over a cheese grater. The story makes the mario series seem literary. The art direction is garish. The whole thing just sucks.
-
Altered Beast, totally sucks...
-
With the exception of golden tee, primal rage and KI you guys couldn't be more wrong with your complaints.
(I'll ignore the console-based posts as they weren't supposed to be in here)
Fighters are awesome, they saved the arcades in the mid-90's (and killed them, but hey nobody's perfect). You can't say a genre sucks just because you don't care for it. Regardless, fighters have never been really popular in the US except for that small time in the early 90's.
Bad Dudes might be the greatest/worst game ever created. I mean you and your friend go around wearing matching outfits all oiled up to akwardly punch and kick not only ninjas, but Karnov to save the president. What's not to love?
All MK games are awesome, but some are better than others. I would gladly admit that mkII is the best one, but UMK3 is the second best. The difference between 1 and 2 is like the difference between sf 1 and 2 (sf1 was barely a game). While mk3 was down-right terrible, because they removed the best characters, umk3 fixed it by putting them back in. Still not as good as mkII, but that's a long way from sucking.
I've gotta agree with jim on this one... as far as arcade games go the popular ones don't suck... the ones that do suck were never popular. It makes sense really. Unlike TV, arcade games have the most direct consumer approval system. If it sucks, people don't put their quarters in it and thus they don't make any more and it isn't popular. Golden tee can be simply written off as not a real arcade game though. It's a sport simular they put in sports bars.
-
You can't say a genre sucks just because you don't care for it.
No no no. I say I don't care for it because it sucks. You have to get your causality in the right direction.
-
Robotron, blasphemy? maybe it might be that Im not good at it, but I'd rather play Smash TV
Joust. It might be unfair to say "it sucks" but to me, its just not fun.
-
I actually find most fighters to be fun. Except Primal Rage. I think Time Killers is even charming. (man I remember being totally pissed putting in a quarter and losing in like 30 seconds because someone cut my head off.) But hey, that's my generation.
-

Shmokes: Well we have to agree to disagree there. I loved the first couple Sonic games. And I really don't pay attention to story with those types of games, but I found them fun. But like someone already mentioned...Sonic is not an arcade game. :)
-

I love me some good fighers. My favorites are Marvel Vs Capcom 1/2. I liked the idea of primal rage, and I liked it at the time, but now, it just sucks. Same with Killer Instinct.
Also tried to play Dark Stalkers. The framerate on that game makes my eyes feel weird.

I love all Capcom fighters...I always wanted Capcom to do DC Vs. Capcom so that one day we could see Marvel Vs. DC...that would have been awesome....but instead we got Mortal Kombat Vs. DC ...oh well.

Altered Beast, totally sucks...
RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!!!!
I liked altered beast even if it's pretty short
And i prefered bubsy over sonic but i still like sonic
-
Altered beats sucks but i find it entretaining, i always play one game everytime a fireup a mame cab. Sony adventures are very stupid, and nonsence too me.
-
I didn't mind Altered Beast...but it is short and there really isn't much of a story behind it.
I like Golden Axe too, but I always hated the ending.
-
Every single fighter and FPS ever made except the Simpsons and TMNT.
Those are 'beat 'em-ups'. And most of them suck. Back in the day, I had fun with Double Dragon. And Simpsons is pretty cute. Overall, my favorite is Caveman Ninja.
-
I didn't mind Altered Beast...but it is short and there really isn't much of a story behind it.
I like Golden Axe too, but I always hated the ending.
I dont think I ever beat Golden Axe. What happens in the ending?
I did however beat Xmen the other day. That was the biggest let down EVER.
-

At the end of Golden Axe a kid is playing the Golden Axe arcade game and the characters from Golden Axe come out of the screen causing the kid to run...or something like that. Pretty stupid to have such a heavy, non-comedic medevil game end in such a goofy way. I mean if the entire game had comedy elements or jokes throughout it would be one thing...but they play up the whole game as serious...and then that.
-

Oh I see you are confusing your personal opinion of a genre rather than the actual quality of a genre (in other words, not an opinion). you can think it sucks, but that doesn't mean that it sucks. The quality of a genre is quantifiable, if you like it or not isn't. ;)

Actually, I'm confusing whether or not one can pick and choose when to apply such a standard and when one can make that type of genre spanning declaration.
Any procedural crime drama (law and order, csi NCIS, ect)..... Twice as offensive for every spin-off it's produced.
Any contest reality show in which a person without talent has or can win. Also applies to talent shows that revolve around a lame talent (dancing shows).
Any reality show in which the stars of the show don't have a real job. (Jersery shore.... real housewives, ect).
Shows that are remakes of older, better originals (hawaii 5-0, V... all that remake crap nbc already cancelled a few years back)
Cartoon remakes that rape our childhood memories (gi-joe renegades, transformers prime ...ect)
Naruto

Any FPS on a console
-
This thread motivated me to go play Golden Axe.
Man, when I was a kid, I thought this was the coolest game ever. And loved the ending.
Now? Eh... well... it seems like one of those games where if you do everything besides the regular attack, you could probably beat it on a couple of credits. Just keep it to jump slashes and shoulder butts and you're good to go. I fired up the video on Youtube and *finally* saw the much hinted at yet never quite revealed trick to beating Death Adder.... you just keep jumping up and slashing over and over.
Ah well. Still... kinda... fun.
:dunno
I like Golden Axe...just not the ending.

Any FPS on a console
Powerslave on the Saturn was actually pretty good. Too many jumps that were near impossible to get over the gap, though. You'd fight your way through a hard level and then die jumping a broken bridge section.

Earthworm Jim
-
The topic is ARCADE games, please cease with all this console nonsense. Pit fighter was pretty bad...
-
I figured someone was gonna mention Power Slave. Never figured it was going to be the most accomplished man that ever lived. :-\
I don't always play console games, but when I do, I prefer Keith Courage in Alpha Zones.
-
I loved Pit Fighter when it first came out. I think because the graphics were good for the time. It had the digitized graphics before Mortal Kombat was even out. Going back and playing it today is hard though..the controls are terrible.
-
There have been a ton of good FPS games on consoles. Chronicals of Riddick, Goldeneye, Metroid Prime, King Kong, Far Cry (the one that was an Xbox exclusive). People who make this claim about console FPS games are just snobs. I mean, it's a given that keyboard/mouse is almost always a superior control scheme, but the extent you are taking it is like saying there's never been a good racing game controlled by a gamepad, or a good flying game without a flight stick and rudder pedals.
edit: spelling (good racing, not food racing :) )
-

Oh really? Subject line says "Popular games (that really suck)"
Let me add one to the list: Monopoly
-
nope, it says arcade games
-
Yahtzee bores me.
-
COD (I see no fun in this)
Super Mario Galaxy (could have been OK, it sucks because of the wiimote).
Super Mario 64 (just because it's everyone's No1, I think it stinks graphically (don't tell me it is the first 3D graphic adventure.... boooh, diddy kong on the same machine DOES look good), no action, too much humping trees, too slow, boooring).
Super Mario Kart series (could be OK, but the computer is really a pain in the ass with the assignment of goodies, I want lightning and red turtles in the first position too! Other carts behind outside view go faster than all others looking at the speed of the dots of the map. Peach is always helped. Being stuck behind obstacles really stinks).
Super Metroid (boooring, slow, too large, did I mention SLOOOOOWWWW).
Yoshi's Island (unbearable because of the abducted baby sound!)
Angry Birds (another sound-problem for my ears).
Oh, BTW sonic haters in this topic: I love Sonic. The Game Gear version rules. Great sprites, decent gameplay, not the over-the-top levels of the Genesis and the best music on any 8-bit platform.
-
The topic is ARCADE games, please cease with all this console nonsense.
Sorry..... please change topic title, we might not read page 1!
Arcade games are ALL good.
Except Golden Tee off course, which sucks badly, but that is a disguised Wii I would imagine.
-
Video games have endings?
When RAM was enough to hold more than 254 pac levels or a certain DK progress, and it was affordable to use some RAM for the end scene, yes, they had endings. It is hard to think of games that don't have them (beside the 16-64K ram classics off course).
-
Just curious,
Why is everyone so down on Golden Tee? Do people have the same opinion of SilverStrike. I think the bags spin off is a little much, but all are good bar games with friends. Never really got in to Golden Tee, but silver strike is a good game to put a $1 in per person and play against several of friends at the bar.
-
ANY AND ALL NEO GEO FIGHTERS
PS: You have to edit your very first message subject line in order for it to change in the forum view.
-
I am not down on Golden Tee, I am just not high on it, not a big fan of the bowling games either. "Hey, lets take turns spinning this trackball!"
just doesn't do it for me.
big buck hunter is overrated too.
-
I like Golden Tee and bowling games. I like the animal shooting games, too.
@Blanka: maybe you missed Saint's sentiment. Technical exceptions aside, games went on forever. It was only when they started making stories out of them that this changed.
-
ANY AND ALL NEO GEO FIGHTERS
meehhhhh Samurai Shodown 1 and 2 were fantastic

Pac-Man sucked a lot! ^^
-
Angry birds rocks, BTW. (just not on a cab...)
Jurassic Park anyone?
-
Thayers Quest.
-
Ok, don't throw anything at me... Galaga. I prefer to play Galaxian, Astro Blaster, a whole slew of other 'contemporaries'. Maybe because it has the fame it does (even non-gamers know Galaga) I tend to secretly roll my eyes when someone asks to play it. I guess that's not the same as saying it sucks, but overrated IMO.
Wrong thread then?

The story of Mario literary. ROFL. Well let me tell you that story: "Gay Italian Plumber (who should not dig ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- anyway) has to rescue worthless non careful ---smurfette--- for the 35th time from the same castle by kicking Bowser of a platform he just gets back onto in the next sequel when the ---smurfette--- has run into her secret lover Bowser once again".
These games are NEVER about story. But I still remember sonic landing on my Game Gear (and on my friends Genesis). It made every other platformer look crap and sound crap. As a grown up, I cannot say anything else today. It still looks stunning, and (I have to admit the GG version is even better, maybe because it does not have the oversized non-understandable levels of the Genesis versions and Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 on the GG have - by far - the best ever 8-bit soundtrack made for a game).
Back to the real crap:
Angry Birds and Wordfeud. I want to kick my school kids for playing that.
-

I guess that shows that I am getting old.

If you can run one of these you can play Madden. There's some buttons. ;D

I got to play a dedicated Spy Hunter recently. That game stinks.

You mean, You stink at Spy Hunter, and dont like that fact right?
Spy Hunter is a desert island game. The AI is perfectly Awesome. Every game is a new experience, with intensity rarely matched.
-
No, he must mean Spy Hunter 2 sucks. And I agree...
-
all mortal kombat..
mostly jokes if you start playing "competitively" with other people. then you realize how boring mk games are including the newest one. I have no idea what I doing and learned kung lao in like a day and pretty much won every match I played online lol..
-

I may stink at Spy Hunter. It still sucks. I played it a lot as a kid thought I remembered liking it.
Conversely I KNOW I stink at Donkey Kong but still love the game.
-
Everyones entitled to their opinions of course, but Id be curious to know what it is specifically about Spy Hunter that you dont like.
It has some of the Fastest racing speeds in any game.
- multiples awesome weapons.
- you can slam cars off the road!
- You can take Hellicopters out of the sky with missiles.
- You can turn into a boat, and release flaming trails of oil!
- it has awesome theme song and sound fx
I just dont see whats not to like?
DK is a bit too clunky control wise for my tastes, and too slow. Its also a bit too cheap. I still play it occasionally, but would rather fire up something else.
And Yeah, Spy Hunter 2 was Wretched. What a monumental disappointment.

I don't disagree any of that. Recently I had an opportunity to play about 20 classic games that I had not seen in 20 years. Spy Hunter was one of them and I was very excited at first for the reasons you list. I played it a couple of times and found myself getting frustrated with the driving controls. It actually reminded me a little of DK in how accurate you needed to be. I Decided I would rather spend my limited time playing Defender and Asteroids Deluxe. I did not find that Spy Hunter held up well at all. Maybe if I had access to one and could play it regularly I would change my mind.
One thing I noticed was how similar the physics of Spy Hunter were to Bump N' Jump. Makes we wonder if they share some of the same code.
-
Never really understood what made the FINAL FANTASY
games so appealing to everyone. I would just look at them and (insert fart sound)
Now Phantasy Star 2
for the Sea Genesis was my First RPG game and I thought thought that game was epic.
I remember almost crying when Nei(A charter you had at the very start) died to her sister Neifirst in a 1 vs 1 battle. I was like NOOOOOOOOOO that’s my ---smurfette---!
Phantasy Star 2 playthrough #13: Neifirst (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQ0S2n4sWRs#)

I used to play Bump n Jump forever when I was a kid. It was one of the games I probably played the most. heh But its interesting that you consider SH difficult, when I would think Defender is much more difficult and controls very quirky compared to most games.
I think you may be right though. Spend an hour or two with the game, and you start to get the hang of the way it works, and find little tips to keep alive longer.
One thing I found out that turned out to be very important.. is the ability to ram the switchblade cars when they are behind you. This saves your weapons supplies. As they are just coming up on your side, you can smash them right before their tires come into play.
Oil Slick is kinda like Asteroids Deluxe, in that its Time / volume based, rather than presses. The longer you hold it down, the quicker you run out.
Shooting forward guns all the time is dangerous. Usually only do this when you need to kill a baddie.
- Be prepared for puddles, they can smash u into a car or off-road. Watch for car positions, and leave room for puddles slide effect should they come.
- Use pedestrian cars as shields. The baddies have to get around them to get to you.
- Get to high gear, and stay there... but, reduce the pedal so its almost stalled out. Going too fast in this game can be a death sentence. (unless you are in the die-free time period) At this speed, you can still slow down if needed (such as almost about to hit a car), but you can also speed up very quickly to escape baddies.
-If you get a baddie off screen, it can take a while before they return.
- Go fast as possible without crashing, to cover a lot of ground, and get one or two extra men before the timer runs out.
- The ice level Suxs. I cant help you there.
- Dont go too fast on the boat stage. You cant turn quick enough to avoid danger.
-Juke the helicopter, by staying in a place for a sec. You have to be prepared for the curves in the road... so make sure you have the time and space needed to still have road room to evade into.
- Take out one baddie at a time. Trying to fight a mob of bumpers inst good.
- When bumping, SLAM the wheel hard as you can. The faster you move the wheel, the harder you can push the baddie. The wheel wont break.. its made to do this. If you bump too slow, it will be nullified. If you wait too long, the baddies force will also be greater... so bump before them.
- The van has a graphical icon on top, which shows you whats inside it.
- Pressing the Van button doesnt make it come any faster / sooner.(its just a start button)
Now Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 2 Pissed me off. It was soooo bland and boring compared to PS1. It also omitted the cool 3d dungeons. PS1 is so much more creative. If you have not played it, I suggest you go back and try it.

I'd say Dragon's Lair. I get why it was so popular, but the game mechanics have to be one of the lamest, most boring things around. Memorize several short sequences and you've pretty much got it. Don't memorize them and you have ZERO chance of being successful. Not like most other games, where you can develop your own strategy and at least have the illusion that you're getting better.

Fruit Ninja. Yes, it's an arcade game too. Three giant touchscreens in a triangle. Multiplayer... but only between two screens at a time. I don't think they made any changes to the graphics, and it costs about the same to play as it does to buy the game on your phone. It's an abberation, and yet people still play it. :dunno

Madden. Too many buttons!
I guess that shows that I am getting old.
If you can run one of these you can play Madden. There's some buttons. ;D
That's different. Those games are all classics! ;D
Madden comes out every year with a few upgrades and/or changes? I don't see how people can justify buying it every year. But I guess some don't understand retrogaming either.

I thought the updates were incremental as far as game mechanics and graphics but the big updates was updated players.

The player updates are the biggest deal with my son. He can't wait for Friday each week when they update the rosters and player rankings based on the previous games. Yesterday Josh McCown was added to the Bears roster and he is right now "trying him out" against the Chiefs.

I prefer Galaxian over Galaga too, although I don't mind Galaga. It bugs me that the play count for Galaga is higher than Galaxian on my cab, because everyone that has ever visited and played the cab has gone straight to Galaga...

Hmmm. I don't mind Galaxian, but I really love Galaga! What sucks? I'd have to say Tempest. Not truly horrible, but most definitely overrated! WAY to difficult!

WHat?! Are you playing with a keyboard or something? Tempest and Warlords are the reason I put spinners in my cocktail cab.
-
The spinner does help, but it is just not my cup of tea.

Warlords yes! I love that game, it's :censored: (Censoring myself) awesome! Plus Arkanoid.

I didn't care for Pole Position.

Fighting games are generally overrated, most of them suck. And this comes from someone who was a teenager in the 90s. I was down with the SF2 games and MK games and still enjoy them semi-often. I liked Killer Instinct at the time, but it has aged badly, I don't much care for it anymore. I might play just a little bit of Tekken, Virtua Fighter, or King of Fighters now and then.
The rest of them are pretty crap IMO. I always find them generic and dull and/or too much like work to learn how to play well.
