So the GF and I finally got things in order and splurged on a new TV. Now I'm feeling like I want to get a Blu-Ray player as well and I was thinking about buying a PS3 around the holidays - mostly for the Blu-Ray movies, of course (wink wink)... but also to play an occasional game.
So my questions:
1) How does it perform as a Blu-Ray Player? I read it's pretty solid but I wanted to see if others thought that. Also up-converting standard DVDs. How does it look?
2) I know I was preaching the "graphics aren't important" rhetoric many times in defense of Wii, but I can't deny that I like me some eye-candy. Any game suggestions? I should add that I'm more a fan of simpler, unique games rather than the same 'ole "FPS".
3) Any other opinions? Should I spend a few extra bucks and get the "Move" bundle or not waste my money like I did with the Eyetoy...
Looking forward to the feedback. Thanks in advance.

its a great blu ray player, in fact thats about all I ever use it for. While I'm not an xbox360 fanboy as some claim, I am in fact a bit of a Sony hater. The PSP would be useless if I couldnt run emulators on it, and PS3 will be until they get some homebrew running on it. As for games, I tend to get my games on the 360, but Im sure some Sony Fanboys will hop in and give you the normal "God Of War, Gran Turismo (not out yet), Metal Gear Solid (interactive movie), Little Big Planet (boring ass game),etc " list of games.
-
I haven't played either of the first two God of War games, but I recently played God of War III and it is just absolutely phenomenal from beginning to end. Ultra violent, though. There's a scene where you graphically tear a guy's head off and it takes a bit of work and time and the skin and tendons stretch a big before giving. It was probably too much. But it's really great. Similarly, and much more family friendly, Uncharted 2 was one of the best games I've ever played. The production values are astounding. Demon's Souls is amazing too. Heavy Rain looks amazing and super innovative. I just ordered that today, so I'll find out soon enough. I've only played about five minutes of Little Big Planet. It seemed super boring, but my brother loves it and he has good taste in games so I've always chalked that up to just never putting in enough time to get into it. Judging by its popularity and the reviews, I suspect that it is pretty phenomenal. And Metal Gear Solid is really good, even though it does have too many cut scenes.
As far as simple games go, check out Echochrome and Braid and FLOWer and Scott Pilgrim on PSN. These are all amazing, inexpensive little games.
I think all of those, except Braid, are PS3 exclusives. If you don't have a 360 there's a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- ton more games you'll want to consider. Bayonetta, GTA, Red Dead Redemption, Infamous, Batman: Arkham Asylum . . .
Lots more I guess, but these come to mind.
-
Coming eventually is The Last Guardian, from the makers of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. I almost bought a PS3 just for this game.
-
Scott Pilgrim is on XBOX360 as well (have it, its a fantastic River City Ransom type game). As for little big planet, my GF logged about 20 hours on it and it didn't get any better, its just a really boring platformer that you can make your own levels for.
Infamous is a PS3 exclusive, you prolly have it mixed up with Prototype (which was on both 360 and PS3, and I mix them up all the time) and its pretty good ; shame the lead character's arch nemesis is the chain link fence.
-
i must say that god of war III was impressive, I haven't noticed a leap in graphics like that since we went from ps1/n64 to sega dreamcast.
Ok ok maybe it was because I experiences it at my friends house who had a projectors and some fancy surround sound speakers... and I really only felt that way in the first stage, hades was standards *meh* stuff.
I have a xbox 360 too, but a ps3 is a good investment.. I'd get one if I had the funds for a handful of ps3 games. To be honest though.. isn't that all you need nowadays? Yeah as a kid I would have cared that the 360 has more fun games, but the ps3 has at least enough to keep me busy Heavy Rain, uncharted 2, that new game from the ico team, and plus pretty much all the games i'd want on the 360 (such as, red dead redemption).

The only real disappointing surprise I got with
the playstation 3 was the half hour game installs
with each new game.
It's not a huge deal, but coming from an arcade generation guy
it's a half hour I would rather have spent actually playing the game.

What? I pop a game in my PS3 and play it.

Lot's of games require installs. Lot's of games have optional installs to improve load times. Lots of games are just put in and play. Installs, including installs for PSN titles, do tend to take a lot longer than one would expect, though never (rarely?) a half hour.

Wait till you get Heavy Rain, its like 20 min, then when you fire it up it does a 10 min update :)
Shoulda got it new, you'd get the origami to do to pass the time.

Katamari on the PS3 is great. It is ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on the XBOX (all fun levels are online buyable add ons), and does not exist on the Wii (when does that piece of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- get a decent controller?). So let that game be your reason for a PS 3 ;)
-
The games I'm waiting for now are Killzone 3, and Gran Turismo 5 which I just pre ordered the Collectors Edition yesterday. The only thing i'm not looking forward to is the 10GB optional install on GT5 but considering the game more than likely takes up the full 50GB blu ray disc. it's not that big of a deal i'm sure it will be worth the space.

Sold! I love Katamari Damacy.
Thanks for the input. I think I've gotten over my "Sony-Hate" for now and will take the plunge.

I've got a PS3 as well, mostly use it for media streaming. (Not been really big into games lately, dunno what my deal is :( )
I use PlayOn and stream all kinds of content to my PS3 from my home computer. They have tons of add-on scripts/plugins you can use that people have created where you can stream anything from Anime to MMA fights, Netflix, etc., for free. (Sure, XBOX can do it as well, but that's not the point of the topic)
I've played several Blu-Ray discs; look beautiful. As far as up-converting, I can't really comment though.
Game content is also great. Heavy Rain is beautiful and has some of the coolest gameplay i've ever done. Call of Duty games are a great bit of fun; especially multiplayer. Little Big Planet was bashed on earlier, but its simplistic puzzle fun. Fat Princess (PSN) is simply amazing as well. (CO-OP anyone?) God of War III is a great game also; uber violent, but great storyline and very fun.
For the price point I don't really think you can go wrong. If you watch the deals, you can occasionally get one from Dell for $225-250.
-
If you ever thinking of playing other games than ps3, like ps2, then i would go for an older 80gb ps3. Those can run all the good stuff like homebrew, linux, emulators and so on.
-
Don't go for an older PS3. They can't run any of that stuff (except with the new mod, but it's way too early and expensive to want to buy that). They used to be able to run Linux, but that option was taken away a few months back by a required firmware update. I'm pretty sure this firmware update applied to old-model PS3s as well as new ones, but I could be wrong about that. In any case, I doubt that you have any interest in running Linux on your PS3.
If PS2 backward compatibility is that important to you go ahead and consider buying an old fat-model PS3 (used). But if you REALLY want to play PS2 games, you're probably a lot better off just buying a new PS3 Slim and a PS2. While doing all this, though, keep in mind that you're an adult now and there are already too many great PS3 games available for you to get to them all, so the chances of actually getting around to the PS2 games seem pretty low. Also bumped-resolution versions of God of War 1&2 are available on a single $30 collector's edition disc, and it appears that Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are getting the same treatment. And let's be honest . . . if you were actually going to put down your PS3 games to play PS2, it'd probably be for one of those games anyway. Backward Compatibility is like flood insurance. It's nice to know it's there if you ever need it . . . but you probably won't ever use it.

I couldnt disagree more.

Yeah, I play PS1 games on my PS2, as well a LOT of Gamecube games on my Wii. I never had a Gamecube, so when I got Wii, I had the chance to finally catch up on many games I missed out on (at way better prices).

Yup backwards compatibility rocks!
But he has a point, are you married? do you have kids? a full time job? then realistically you don't have time for all the ps2 games + ps3 games
If' you're a student or a single guy then go for it!

Dunno how you do it, but very nice.

I don't have much time to play, but I'm not ditching the old games I didn't get around to playing just because I have a newer system.
-
It's not just because you have a newer system. It's because newer, more tempting games are constantly being released for that system. It's not that when I bought Fear Effect 2 I didn't intend to play it. It's just that it's still sitting there in its case after like 4+ years because it just keeps being something that I'll eventually get around to. Except I won't.
-
althought not on an old system, you guys inspired me to go revisit the xbox 360 games I never finished.
Lost Odyssey.. I left off in the 3rd disc about a year ago. Maybe after I finish this I can try out final fantasy XII, unless any other better rpgs or adventure games exist... or maybe an action game to keep it short.
-

Opinion is not fact; and while your opinion is not wrong, you can't assume everyone shares the same opinion.
A new game may be tempting but if there was a game you missed or never heard of and you can buy it for next to nothing wouldnt it be great to not have to buy an old system just to play it? Ginsu's Wii / Game Cube example is perfect. I didnt buy a gamecube but there were a few games I would have liked to have played, so now that I got a Wii (against my will) I can pick up the few good GC titles and not have a purple box sitting next to my TV, just a purple controller.
I wish my PS3 could play PS2, I'd prolly play it more; I love me some Tokyo Extreme Racer (I have import Tuner on 360) I just dont have room on my shelf for the system, so its sitting in a plastic Bin
-
My gamecube is silver... :dunno
-
Opinion is not fact;
Seriously . . . banish that from your vocabulary. It doesn't mean anything. Of course what I say here is my opinion. On the other hand, I think (and it's pretty obvious to everyone that it's my opinion I'm giving here, so no need to point it out), that it probably is objective fact that very few people make use of backward compatibility, even of the people who like the idea of it. Since most people won't use it (even if they initially think they will), or won't use it enough to justify the cons (used, out-of-warranty, huge system, tiny hard drive) and the extra cost, and since statistically the OP probably falls within the "most people" category, it can be said with some degree of reliability that backward compatibility is probably not a good idea for him (or most people).
In any case, who whether it's opinion or fact? I'm giving him my opinion, you're giving him yours, and then I'm giving him objective facts that suggest that my opinion is more useful to him than yours. If a mechanic suggests a particular brand of air filter, he's giving you his opinion. But just because it's his opinion doesn't mean that it has no more value than the brand your 5-year-old kid suggests based on the color of the packaging. Not all opinions are created equal.
-
Tiny hard drive?
I have a backwards compatable PS3, the 60Gb version. Also, most laptop hard drives can be swapped right in, no modding necessary.
-
The cheapest model PS3 comes with a 160GB HD now. $50 more gets you 250GB.
-
heard they hacked the ps3 dongle hack.. so soon enough you should see cheaper jailbreak dongles (and guides on how to make your own).

not used at gamestop; and that a fact. :lol
You say newer games are more tempting, I say older ones are. Why you got them fishnet panties of yours all up in a bunch over that? Lighten up Francis.

You know, backwards compatibility, or rather, the newer PS3's lack of it (save for PS1 games), has long been one my reasons for hating on Sony and the PS3. But shmokes is right in that it's not so much a big deal now seeing as there's a perfectly fine library of PS3 games and I have a working PS2 that can be hooked up with relative ease. Yes, it would be nice but it's really not so much a deal-breaker for me any longer and it's not incentive enough to find an older model.
I did read about the recent updates that prevented users from installing a secondary operating system to their PS3's (i.e. Linux) but to me that's a complete non-issue. I did a lot of modding with my original Xbox and PSP and I ended up "reversing" both of them. (Yeah I know, "apples and oranges" as the former was a legal modification. But it's somewhat similar so bear with me.) It was cool to play homebrews, but it made regular use a little more complicated (had to flip a switch for the Xbox, couldn't update the PSP, etc.) At the end of the day, I find myself using my consoles more legitimately than not. My emulation needs are met with the PC.
Soon as a new system comes out, I'm RARELY interested in playing old garbage. I'll make the obvious exceptions for arcade games but you'd literally have to pay me to get me to fire up a Gamecube or PS2.
I don't think a great games turns to "garbage" just because it gets older, especially last generation since the graphics weren't horrible piles of jagged, foggy mess like in the PS1/N64 days. I still have a lot of fine games in my PS2 library that I have no intention of ever getting rid of. Heck, I can get into playing Crash Bandicoot: Warped.
Yup backwards compatibility rocks!
But he has a point, are you married? do you have kids? a full time job? then realistically you don't have time for all the ps2 games + ps3 games

Not married but in a relationship. No plans for kids. Yes, full time job with side work. But even so, the gaming happens on the main TV and the girlfriend is always watching something. So gaming for me is quite limited. I still have 2-1/2 Metroid Primes to finish, as well as the Wiiware version of River City Ransom. Then there's the dozen or so games put on the back burner...
But if I were single, I would worry less about backwards compatability. I would have all my game systems stored prominently in the living room with miles of ugly wires clogging the back of my entertainment center. If anything, BC is more useful to me now - the girlfriend doesn't want the clutter.
Actually, she doesn't even know I'm buying a PS3 yet. I'm telling her it's a BluRay player that doubles as a gaming machine. Then I'll get a game that she'll enjoy like "Buzz" or something.
-
FLOWer. My wife love Flower. Also Heavy Rain . . . at least that's my theory. I've never played it before, but I'll try it out tonight and I'll see if she wants to watch.

Shmokes, you sound pretty smart.

I'm probably opening a can by putting this out there... but Heavy Rain wasn't all that great to me. It has fantastic graphics, yes. In fact, the entire presentation is polished and cohesive. It has innovative gameplay elements, yes. It has a "mature" story, in that it was intended for adult players -- I appreciated that immensely.
However, playing through the actual gameplay was only occasionally what I would call engaging, let alone fun. The story is drawn out far too long in the attempt to build dramatic tension. It's also sometimes really hackneyed, and contains some plot holes you could drive a truck through. Your mileage will vary based on your sensitivity to those things.
Sidebar: The voice acting also gets ragged on a lot. That said, I felt that the acting was not bad - but as a performer myself, having had a lot of focused dialect work in grad school - it was frequently apparent that the voice actors were not from the States, as the story intends. Most folks won't notice except in the most egregious of examples.
All that said; you should play it (and ffs buy it if you love it... it's the only way better games of this type will get made!) but I would rent before buying.
-
I've been really enjoying Heavy Rain so far. I've only played it maybe 2-3 hours in total, but I think the gameplay mechanics are super well done . . . really engaging. Except moving the character around. It's just terrible. You push the left stick in the direction you want to go and then . . . I'm totally not making this up . . . nothing happens. You have to, additionally, hold the R2 button down to go. The left stick controls the direction your character will walk if you are holding down the R2 button. Otherwise it does nothing. It's super clumsy. Also you can't run. Just walk. It's an adventure game, though. Obviously in an action game or a platformer this would decisively relegate the game to the garbage can and it wouldn't get higher than maybe a 2 of 10 from any publication. Still, though, it's really annoying.
But everything you do that isn't walking is done super well. Interacting with objects is done in ways that are far far more immersive than I would have thought possible with a gamepad. Same goes for the quick time events. The developers have really transformed the quick time events into being more than just hitting a button at the right time in order to see some prescripted thing play out. The quick time events suck you into the story, and not just because of what you're seeing on screen, but because of the way in which you interact with the controller.
-
Going back to the OP: I'd say "wait and see" on the Move bundle. The software isn't there, if you ask me.
More importantly though, do you enjoy motion gaming? It took me a while to understand it for myself: Generally, I don't actually want to be "Active!" when I'm gaming, unless it's Rock Band or, say, a driving/flight sim where the interface is inherent to the gameplay. I'm perfectly content to sit on ---my bottom--- and press A to swing my sword (or "Press X to Jason" haha!) I'm "Active!" in other ways.
@shmokes: Yeah, the gameplay mechanic is great, it's how they utilized it (with a few exceptions) that was not at all engaging to me. I thought most of the combat/chase set-pieces (despite being QTE) were amazing(!) when using the motion mechanic. I just don't think spending time making dinner and changing babies is at all fun (or even RELEVANT to the plot!) in this same context - regardless of how immersive it might feel. In an "interactive experience" where plot and characterization is the primary selling point, I don't want to be distracted from it just to fulfill the "Hey you're playing a GAME" requirement.
I guess what I'm saying is this: I wouldn't have minded if they had made the whole game a QTE "Choose Your Own Adventure" if they kept the story moving and didn't digress into "look what we made you do" moments. That's probably why I liked Metal Gear Solid 4! :laugh2: (By the way, another great PS3 exclusive...)
I am INCREDIBLY excited to see them follow up on this style of storytelling. I just don't think Heavy Rain quite hit the mark.
-
I think the point of the diaper changing and making dinner and stuff is to develop an emotional connection to the characters. Like . . . you were personally went into the back yard and played with your kids, and you make them food, and tuck them in at night. Then something happens and maybe it means a bit more to you. I think it works. Maybe they could have just played a couple cut-scenes telling you that you have a relationship with your family . . . but I think there's a decent chance that the way they did it actually connected you to the characters and events in a more substantial way.
-
Hmmm... shmokes, that's a totally valid point ... and what's interesting is that what I want to say about that will COMPLETELY spoil the end for you, which I don't want to do. Regardless of how I eventually felt about the game! :)
So, in that sense, the game is certainly a success -- it has a distinct value that I, as a gamer, feel strongly enough about not to spoil your experiencing it -- but I do believe it can go much, much further.
Imma shuddup now. ;D PM me if you want to continue the conversation at some point. Good stuff!
EDIT: Sorry for the threadjack, DaveMMR, but at least you know now that the game is certainly worthy of discussion!

I was at work today talking about Wii games and I heard myself say "you know, I'm tired of waggle." And I am. The GF and I have been playing a lot of New SMB Wii and that's minimal waggle. The other games I've been working on only use motion controls for aiming (i.e. Metroid Prime Trilogy) or are VC or WW downloads.
You know, the girls may appreciate the whole "Move" thing but, to me, it's redundant when I already have a Wii and they don't give a flark how it looks. These are people who can play Wii Sports until the day they die and be happy with it. So I think you're right, the "move" bundle may be overkill and my money would be better spent on other games.
As for Heavy Rain: It sounds like a game I may have to get when I have a long weekend to myself. I saw some clips and it looked interesting but lately I've been of the "quick action" mindset. That's subject to change at any time so I'm keeping HR on my radar.
EDIT: Sorry for the threadjack, DaveMMR, but at least you know now that the game is certainly worthy of discussion
Not a threadjack at all. I asked about PS3 and, thus, this is totally valid.

Yeah man, I feel yah on the quick action games. I'm trying to get back into playing an rpg on my xbox 360. I started it over a year ago, and recently picked up where I left off. After playing a little bit I started remembering where the story left off. It was fun but then...
I had to go through a dungeon.. that had no save point before the boss. After I beat the boss it sent me to the boat (airship type vehicle of the game). You can't save while on the boat (as far as I can tell) so I was looking for somewhere to land so I could find a city in hopes of getting to a save point or an overworld map to save. I ran into another boss, that killed me... after about an hour and half of play. the game sent me back to my last save (the beginning of that dungeon). seriously, WTF. they don't want us adults to play RPGs. I seriously feel that all rpgs should let you save at any point. Saving at any point doesn't necessarily make the game any easier.. it just saves time.
Does anybody have any ideas if final fantasy XIII lets you save often? The price is at a point where I'm considering buying.
-
I'm resurrecting this thread for another question. The holidays are coming and I was going to put this under the tree (yes, I wrap and label gifts to myself sometimes). Anyway, I ruled out the "Move" bundle as I feel I'm over the whole "motion" thing (or until I see it's not just an under-supported peripheral). However, I do see for $50 more I can get a 320Gig HD as opposed to the $299 160GB setup.
Now, assuming I'm not really using the HD to store music, movies, pictures, etc. (at least, not much) nor am I really interested in upgrading to a larger HD in the future - is there any advantage to getting the larger HD up front?
-
It's a good price. I don't think you can get a 320 GB 2.5 inch hdd for that price. Granted, if you bought the cheaper one and upgraded you'd have a spare 160 GB drive to throw into an enclosure, but you probably don't need that.
For what it's worth, I have a 120 GB drive that I haven't come close to filling up, though I probably don't buy nearly as many games as some of you.
It's such a big jump for such a reasonable price that I'm almost inclined to say go ahead and get the insurance. But really I suspect you don't need it.
-
Also, if you just get 160 Gb now, you can always upgrade later. The PS3 will take any 2.5" HD (laptop size). You can buy a 1Tb laptop disk on newegg for $120.
-
For $50 I put a 500G drive in mine. I'd get the cheaper version and wait to see if you need anything bigger. The longer you wait the more space you'll be able to get for $50.
-
When I first got my PS3, I immediately modded it with a 320gig hd. I don't store any movies/music/pics/demos long term on the drive, but I am fairly active in downloading demos and DLC (particularly for RockBand, which takes a fair amount of space) and I always install games to hd if given the option.
I've used all of about 50 gigs total. High estimate.
Save the $50.
If you ever actually needed to upgrade, anything you buy/download from PSN can be re-downloaded once you've got your PSN account back up on the system. I may be wrong, but I think you can do full system backups to an external drive now, too.
-
Awesome feedback. Thank you very much! I'll use that extra $50 towards a game.
-
If you're strictly going to stay away from videos/music on the HDD then you should be fine. But I had to upgrade my HDD from 60 GB to 120GB because some of the game installs are surprisingly large. Some games require installs that can be several GB's. If you do require to upgrade later it can be done very easily on your own with any regular laptop SATA HDD.
-
So I squeezed a PS3 down to within $50 of a comparable bluray player and subsequently bought one.
Any good cheapies out there that are PS3 exclusive? Looking at that Metal Gear Solid game... hopefully it's not as weird as the PS1 outing.
Just out of curiosity, what makes a Blu-Ray player worth $250 nowadays?
BTW, gotta pick up MotorStorm and the Resistance games. A little dated now, but good, cheap fun nonetheless.
-
If you felt that Metal Gear Solid on Playstation was weird,
your going to like the others even less.

Im thinking of buying a PS3 for a few games, let alone the blu-ray player. Marvel vs capcom 3 comes out in Feb(Xbox controller sucks for fighting games) and I REALLY wanted to play God of War 3. Im not too sure what else though. Uncharted 2 is supposed to be awesome.

Demon's Souls is amazing. The story is pretty much irrelevant. And the game is punishingly difficult. Just remember, each time you die (and you will die . . . often) you are a bit more powerful on your next time through. It's an always-connected, online enabled game, but in a way that is totally different than anything that has come before. It's very much a single-player game, but other people can affect your game world and vice versa. I guess if you want more details find a real review . . . I could go on and on.
Anyway, the game is just incredible. I don't think I've ever played a more addicting game. If you get into it you should pretty much treat the experience much as you would if you were going out of town. Tell your wife to just pretend you don't exist for a couple weeks, because for all intents and purposes, you won't. All you'll want to do is play Demon's Souls.
It's a $20 greatest hits game, now.
Also, if you missed them on PS2, the HD collection of God of War I and II are $20. Haven't played them, but III was great.
-
If you aren't as cheap as I am, you should probably grab one of those $300 slim bundles with the games from some tax free seller like New Egg. PS3 is almost like the Xbox 360 in that the systems themselves are borderline worthless, but you're going to get creamed on the controllers. At least the hard drives are generic... :P
Thats what sucks, I AM cheap. Like I said, I have been thinking about getting once since GoW 3 came out, but just havent wanted to shell out the cash. :-\ Yeah...Damn controllers. Im wondering if I should just play MvC3 over at my friends house and let HIM buy all the stuff. He is rich anyway.

Yeah Shmokes, I heard Demon Souls was glorious, but it was hard as ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---. Not that I dont mind a challenge, but just really REALLY hard. Ugh, my GF only whines when she doesnt play... I can almost hear her now "how come you never get any 2 player games" :blah:
No, I played God of war 1, bought god of war 2 and havent played it. Im in hardcore game debt. I just havent had the damn time... Yup, thats what I heard... :banghead:

Just got my PS3 today in the mail (can't really play with it until Christmas though :-\). I ordered the FAMILY BUNDLE from Amazon that came with a Ratchet & Clank and Singstar 2 w/ 2 USB Microphones (yeah, I'm probably selling the latter). Still a good deal.
But while waiting I found quite a few good cheap PS3 games that I may be purchasing: probably Buzz! and Scene It! for the girlfriend. Saw a couple of controller/game promo bundle deals, one with God of War 1 & 2/Red Controller and another with Little Big Planet/Controller. Sadly, won't arrive until after Christmas. Plus, I'm interested in a lot of what they're offering to download. I've been out of the Sony game for so long, I didn't see that their good selection of games.
And I agree with Jim, once you get down to the big features of higher-end Blu-Rays, it's almost better to get the PS3 so it can double as that media-center as well.
-
Well, the BluRay players I was looking at were $150ish-200. That was DVD upscaling, wireless networking, NetFlix, Pandora, all that BS built into it. If you wander around on Ebay long enough, you can get used a PS3 $180-220. At that point? Screw it - PS3.
Doesn't have wireless, but at $94 (http://www.walmart.com/ip/LG-BD550-Blu-ray-Player/13912185) it's harder to justify buying a PS3 because you want Blu-Ray. Wireless isn't really the best option for streaming movies either, especially high-def, where constantly good available bandwidth is important. My microwave even interrupts my Family Guy re-runs on the Wii. :)
I don't think I would buy a used disc player of any sort either, unless it's very cheap. They are mechanical, and without knowing how many hours are on them, you could spend a buttload of money and have it die a week later with no recourse. New is really safer unless you know who you are buying from.

1) How does it perform as a Blu-Ray Player? I read it's pretty solid but I wanted to see if others thought that. Also up-converting standard DVDs. How does it look?
Bluray performance is amazing. That being said, i still only actually own 1 bluray movie and still watch more dvds or divx from my portable hard drive.
2) I know I was preaching the "graphics aren't important" rhetoric many times in defense of Wii, but I can't deny that I like me some eye-candy. Any game suggestions? I should add that I'm more a fan of simpler, unique games rather than the same 'ole "FPS".
I picked up uncharted 2 last week, it is amazing, and cheap (being platinum). Probably the best looking PS3 Game i own. Ans as primarily an FPS player, it was good to spice things up with this. A great combination of puzzles, shooting and platforming.
God of war 3 is also awesome if you dont mind the violence.
3) Any other opinions? Should I spend a few extra bucks and get the "Move" bundle or not waste my money like I did with the Eyetoy...
Forget the move bundle for now. That money could get you an extra controller AND the bluray remote

I would hope that anyone (these days - considering recent price drops) would have at least a fleeting interest in gaming if they're getting a PS3. Yeah, solely for BluRay (and nothing else), money would be better spent elsewhere. (Though, as an aside, no wireless would be a deal-breaker as I can't start running Ethernet cables through my apartment). I have a sneaky suspicion Jim's going to play a game or two on it. As am I - though I call it a Blu-Ray player to get girlfriend approval. And that's why I don't compare prices with her. She'd see that ad you linked, and then, yeah.... it's harder to justify.

Yeah, I passed up on that. It does look cool but I've been burned by peripherals in the past - games only support it when people are buying those peripherals, but people don't buy them when there aren't games supporting it. Maybe in the future when I see enough must-haves to warrant the purchase. And I still have (and love) the Wii; but I'm about fed up with motion gaming.
-
Jeezus, dude. Lighten up.
C'mon, PJ, just man up and say "I want to buy a PS3, regardless of what it costs and the fact that it plays Blu-Ray is icing on the cake." That's what I did a year ago, when the whole "might as well get a PS3 for the cost difference" thing was actually still a valid sentiment. Nowadays, it's a $200 difference, so you are paying for both machines in the one you get. :D And it's a great Blu-Ray player, but the DVD up-conversion is worse than my old HD-DVD unit. I'm not a big one for conspiracy theories, but if you were the company behind the Blu-Ray standard and looking for mass adoption, how much effort would you put into the DVD upscaling? If you are expecting to use that feature extensively, you might find that other players can do it better.
Also, if you don't mind taking a $200 chance on a possibly beat PS3 on ebay, then that's fine with me. Same with the wireless comment. Just trying to be neighborly.
-
Eh, personally I've never had a problem with used systems, and I've dumpster dove more than one. Certainly capable of replacing parts if I need to. Probably overly sensitive on the PS3 thing, I've taken a -lot- of crap about it from people. :-/
Demon's Souls sounds interesting but I don't think that's for me. May grab Metal Gear or one of the Uncharted games for now. Heavy Rain if it ever gets cheap.
Why are the blowing you crap about the PS3?
-
The Metal Gear Solid for PS3 sucks. And the original for the Playstation is one of my favorite games ever. I must have played through it 6 times back in the day. But anyway, the PS3 has beautiful graphics, but the story line and cut-scenes are incredibly bloated. I don't even think it should really be considered a game. And it is actually one of the only games I've been dissapointed enough in to sell within a few weeks time.
As for Demon's Souls, Shmokes is right. I watched that game consume my Roomates life for about a month. It looked really cool, but I didn't try and get into it, because I didn't have time to devote to such a deep game with school at the time.
-
Now that you have a PS3, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Dark Knight in blu-ray. That's my go to disc for showing off my home theater.
-
So, the DVD upscaling isnt that great? That was one of the prime reasons for me to get one, and the blu ray, game exclusives, and stuff I mentioned before. Damn. Well, now it doesnt sound like such a great deal. :hissy:

In my experience, I've found that Christopher Nolan movies are best left seen once and never again. Not that I don't enjoy them but nothing has held up to a second viewing. :-\
Memento is the only one I've watched multiple times.
Couldn't get into Following. Haven't seen Insomnia, though I own it. The Batman movies are great, but nothing I'm going to watch over and over (even though I bought them), and Inception was a good one time viewing (I definitely won't be buying it, though).

I don't agree... however, I was speaking from an eye-candy point of view. The video quality is stunning, especially the shots done in IMAX.

Also, before buying a blu-ray movie, I always check here first:

You can find out if it's a crap transfer or not.

I've seen it in action and agree 100%. When I saw my friend's copy on his Blu-Ray set-up, it was stunning.

My microwave even interrupts my Family Guy re-runs
OMG . . . they should advertise that feature. They'd sell millions of those Microwaves!
-
OMG . . . they should advertise that feature. They'd sell millions of those Microwaves!
I know you are trying to be funny, but pretty much all microwaves operate in the 2.4 ghz band, which makes them nasty for Wi-Fi, wireless phones, etc...
-
I think everyone figured this out like 20 years ago, Randy.
Yet they still want to stream video over Wi-Fi.
-
So my questions:
I know it's a bit late but I wanted to give you my feedback. I purposely haven't read any other responses so you could have my unbiased take on owning a ps3.
1) Visually Blue Ray is fantastic if the studio takes the time to deliver it right...results vary as with any technology almost from disc to disc...when it's done right though you can't beat it.
The upconverting is great as well imo...nowadays I use the PS3 mostly for converted tv shows/movies and watch them either from my media station pc (wireless) or via a USB hard drive. Honestly the PS3 is getting much more use as a media player than as a games machine although it is great in that department as well.
At first there was an issue with some XVid versions not playing but with the last few firmware updates I have had no converted files play that I can remember for a long time.
2) Graphics are gorgeous on native Sony dev'd games like Uncharted 2 etc...but you mention other than FPS type games... definitely some great titles out there that look great and play great but simple:
Braid (puzzle platformer...simple but well done graphics)
Pac Man Championship edition (usually these types of games have a tendency to fail...this one doesn't)
Demon's Souls (yes its an FPS rpg...and people either love it or hate it...but its very unique...hard and challenging and imo...great...like the days of old requires skill not emotion to get far)
Little Big Planet (nother great puzzle/platformer)
Tales of Monkey Island
3) I think the Move bundle is different enough from the the "Eye" stuff to make it worthwhile...it will be catered to heavily (for good and lots and lots of bad) but after the dust settles I have no doubt there will be some gems using that controller.
-

Lol . . . A #1, some microwave ovens reek havoc on WiFi networks while others don't seem to have any appreciable effect. B #2, the point is that Family Guy is unwatchably bad. ;D

A #1 (which I thought was a steak sauce) it depends on the placement and PBJ says everyone already knows that what I wrote was true, and B #2, sez u ;D
Also, web surfing ain't streaming hi-def to your TV.

Definitely get Uncharted 2. No question about it. I would seriously reconsider Metal Gear if I were you. It's also pretty damned difficult, but I've tried twice to get into it and failed twice. I think if I managed to get into it would be a great game, but it starts out super slow, and repetitive because you keep dying and having to start over. And the stuff you keep doing is just a bit boring. And there's a lot of talking. A lot of Snake just waxing philosophic in your ear. Try Demon's Souls. But, yeah, get Uncharted 2. Feel free to skip Uncharted 1. It's not nearly as good and you don't need to have played 1 to fully understand and enjoy 2.

So, the DVD upscaling isnt that great? That was one of the prime reasons for me to get one, and the blu ray, game exclusives, and stuff I mentioned before. Damn. Well, now it doesnt sound like such a great deal. :hissy:
I intended to respond to this sooner, but I needed to do some research to make sure that what my eyes were telling me could be backed up by others. So I spent some time on the AV forums and it was confirmed.
People seem to like the DVD upscaling on the PS3 ok. It supposedly gets better marks than the upscaling on the 360, but the difference didn't seem that significant to me. It turns out that one of the best upconversion chipsets is the one used in the Toshiba HD-DVD players, as well as a couple of other dedicated DVD units. Coincidentally, I have been using the Toshiba to play my DVDs, so I have been spoiled. I also view them on a very large screen, so the flaws become more apparent. If you are watching on a 42" or smaller screen, and have nothing to compare it to, it's unlikely you will be unhappy with the upscaling on the PS3.
In addition, depending on the quality of your set, sometimes you are better off letting it do the conversion. The circuitry to do that kind of thing in a $1200 television is probably better than what's going to be in $60 dedicated DVD player. How that relates to the PS3, I have no clue. But it might be worth it to try both approaches to see what gives the best result.

Thanks for that Randy. Well, I think Im sold. Ill get myself one before February, thats when MvC3 comes out. ;D Who knows, there might be some after Christmas sales. The only thing I see right now that Sony is doing is the Move bundle, and I sure as hell dont want that. Or grand turismo 5, they are doing a bundle with that. I never understood why people get so nuts about that game. Then again, Im not into racers so meh... :dunno
-
i LOVE my ps3.
i bought the mgs4 bundle back when it came out. is has the sd card ports, 4 usb slots, plays ps2 games and then i went to best buy and got a 500gb lap top hard drive and put it in. its loaded with all kind of movies and music and after plugging it in to the soround sound its great for parties and movie nights.
metal gear was really the reason i pulled the trigger on buying a ps3 but its such a great system even without it. i havent even considered buying an xbox... with my wii/ps3 i feel like i can play pretty much any good current gen game except halo and mass effect
-
The only real disappointing surprise I got with
the playstation 3 was the half hour game installs
with each new game.
It's not a huge deal, but coming from an arcade generation guy
it's a half hour I would rather have spent actually playing the game.
The only game that let's you read war and peace cover to cover while installing is, GTA4

Mass Effect 2 will be out for PS3 at the end of this month. Mass Effect 3 will be released for both 360 and PS3.

Well yeah, once you elimnate franchises it only boils down to the blu ray in the PS3 vs the 360. I started on Uncharted 2, which is awesome btw. I cant wait for GoW 3. I still need to beat the first 2. Thats the real reason I wanted a PS3. Is Killzone exclusive to Playstation 3?
-
When dealing with true console exclusives in these days of PS3 vs 360, the list is extraordinarily thin. Once you eliminate franchises I couldn't care less about (e.g. Gran Turismo, Halo) you're down to virtually nothing. My PS3 library still consists of Uncharted 2 and Metal Gear 27 or whatever.
Want a super fun game along the lines of Robotron/Asteroides it's called Superstardust HD on the PSN store The game play and graphics are great.
Super Stardust™ HD Official Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYql98tL-t4#)

I just got Gran Turismo 5... took a half hour to download a 600+ meg update, and then another 20 minutes to install tracks and crap to the hard drive. :banghead:
-
Looks neat but I don't really take my consoles online.
Beat Uncharted 2 last night... if anyone has a PS3 exclusive they want to trade for it, LMK. I doubt I'll ever play it again.
Did you like it? I just got mine too and I have only got to play it for about 10 mins. Got to the part where you start out in the jungle. The game is gorgeous. Its pretty fun so far too.
-
Haha good to know. "Far too wealthy" huh? Thats hilarious. Must be nice. ;)
Nice. The third one is supposed to come out soon. I cant wait for next month when MvC3 comes out. I also didnt know DC Online was PS3 exclusive. Too bad it costs 15 bucks a month to play. If it didnt, I would totally get that one. The trailer looked amazing.
-
Speaking of DC, Batman Arkham Asylum is a really good game. I'll second the Super Stardust recommendation.
And yeah, Killzone is PS3 exclusive. I've never played any of the Killzone games, though.
-

Yeah I played Batman on my 360. I thought it was an AMAZING game, the only downfall was the ending (thought it was lackluster/too easy) and being in detective mode the whole time made you miss out on the visuals. What is Super Stardust?
The reason I ask is because they are making a big deal about its release, it being delayed etc. I heard they were good. I want to get Demon Souls after I finish Uncharted 2 and GoW 1,2 and 3 :lol I need to quit my job and break up with my GF or something to free up my damn time!
-
Especially for Demon's Souls. That game will consume you. Super Stardust is a PSN game that controls like Robotron. It's super fast-paced and super difficult. And fun.
-
Sweet, I like games that you cant put down. And when you do, youre thinking about it when youre not playing it. Reminds me of when I was a kid, and you would get a game, go to school, think about it the whole time there, then jam home so you can play. Sweet, Ill have to check that out. They also have Castlevania: SOTN on PSN so I might get that too, its only 5 bucks.

Castlevania SOTN is easily worth the 5 bucks. Great game.

Haha thats awesome Vigo. I skipped out on a weeks worth of school when Zelda Ocarina of time came out. I have a pretty cool mom :lolSOTN is good for its time, but the newer DS games are better. If, like me, you've only got the attention span to play one, go for a DS iteration.
They're all more or less the same game and have equally nonsense plots....
You can thank the Japanese for the ridiculous plots :lol. I dont have a DS so Ill be getting the one on the PSN. I wont even have time to play it, I have so much other ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- to play its retarded. :dizzy:

Ocarina is well worth skipping school over. I din't have the luxury of missing school for video games until college, unless you count the occasional flu that I faked.
Of all the "super metroid" style castlevania games, SOTN is good, but not the best. I would say the best would have to be Aria of Sorrow. After beating the game, there is a add on called Julius mode. It is a alternate version of the game where you have three characters to switch between. It's a lot like Castlevania III in that respect. If you don't want to put money into yet another game system and add more games to your plate, SOTN should be good enough.
-
I have all the DS games and I still put SOTN just above Aria of Sorrow. Order of Ecclesia was easily the worst. If you wanna go GBA Circle of the Moon was the bees knees. I cna admit Im biased towards SOTN, I just always loved the game.
-

I have a GBA I play at work! Circle of the moon huh? Never heard of it. Damn, ok that is top of the list since I could be playing that right now. Instead Im trying to configure HS while talking to you guys :lol
-
Phew, I am getting my Castlevania games confused right now, but I am still pretty sure I liked Aria of Sorrow best just because of the Julius mode. Thinking back, Circle of the moon is really awesome as well. If you got a GBA, go for it.
The Castlevania double pack for GBA is a good purchase, it came with both Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow. I think I didn't like HoD as much, but it was still a good game.
I couldn't get through Order of Ecclesia. Not that it was hard, but the game wasn't as enjoyable. The game didn't seem bad, but I was spoiled with better.
-
I'm thinking of getting a ps3 too, but I noticed something really weird when playing street fighter 4 with a friend... it loads really slowly compared to the xbox 360 version. Is this the case for all of the dual system games? Eitherway, I'm getting it mostly for the ps3 exclusive and bluray.
-
The PS3 drive is really slow, presumably to offset the cost of including Bluray vs. DVD. I haven't played much 360, but I'd guess this is the reason for longer load times. PS3 discs have a much higher capacity, much a much slower transfer rate. There was hope that Sony would put a faster spinning drive in the PS3 slim model, but there was no change.
