I agree about the older pin tables looking really good. On my vpin the newer tables with lots of decorations always look a little off (2d plane and all that) but the older tables look and feel fantastic.

I've been following this build since you started it and it's definitely my favourite vpin build.

Thanks for following this project markc74, yeah I agree some tables look very promising but once loaded do look a bit flat. One table that surprised me was Spongebob Square pants. It does have some nice depth feel and great lighting too!

You have some really clean fit and finish. Looks factory made. Kudos!

Sorry if I missed it, but did you summarize anywhere what you did for computer software/hardware? I saw you're using PinballX but curious about some of your other integrations and how hi-spec of a computer you used.

Thanks, I spend a lot of time trying to get that factory finish look. Paint finishes and artwork take time. Preparation and small details make the difference. I did cover the hardware briefly, repeated below:


12th gen Intel i7 CPU
DDR 5 supporting motherboard, 32 GB DDR 5 RAM
RTX 3060 Ti GPU

The main table screen is an LG 4K monitor, and the backslash screen is an 21.5" 4:3 NEC monitor.
 The system runs Windows 11, 64bit Visual Pinball and PinballX front end. I will eventually change Windows booting into Windows Explorer shell as well.


With Ond builds it is all about design and eye candy to me anyway :D  Living the dream vicariously.


This is true, especially the design bit. I can talk design (mine and others) all day long  ;D

I'm getting some R&R at the moment but back soon enough. When this project is completed ill look at doing a video to show it off a bit.

It was certainly the product of some experimentation over time.  Displayport method did not work for me.  I'm using a HDMI 2.1 cable, I couldn't tell you the brand offhand.  From a generic big box store.

Go to the Extensions section (button near bottom right).  You'll end up having to click to add a Freesync range block, then set it.  I'd recommend 47-61 actually.  45 was a bit arbitrary, and after testing a bit more, I do see some frame drops in 45-46.  62 causes noticeable drops on mine.  Save/apply and exit.


After that, go to AMD Display Settings and you should be able to enable VRR if the last step took.  I'm using an RX 6400 here.  Then you'll need to there create a custom resolution of the native res (2560x2880) at 61hz.

Next, go to Windows Display Settings, then Advanced Display Settings, then Display Adapter Properties to manually change the desktop refresh to 61hz.  Do not skip this step!  Calamity actually posted about this a while back, that VRR apparently has a tolerance range from the set target where it does not kick in.  Net effect is, if it's still set to 60hz, things close to 60 (CPS, for example) do not sync right.  I've seen that behavior on mine.  Lifting it to 61hz apparently 'tricks' VRR into turning on as intended at those between 59-60. 

At that point, you can go verify it's working with various freely available tools.  The scrolling bars VRR test on git, the pendulum test, Blurbusters frame drop test, whatever floats your boat.  Mine appears to be working spot on within the set range.

Last, tweak MAME ini as needed...  almost stock will do.  Turn lowlatency on (1), and make sure refreshspeed, syncrefresh, and waitvsync are all off (0).  And...  that's about it, should work fine.  Turn off filter and go nuts with HLSL.

Let me know how it turns out...  Excited to see someone else appreciating one of these, and hoping mine's not a fluke.

That is exciting if the Monitor supports VRR.   I'm going to set up CRU and test it out this weekend. Any specific info or screenshots of CRU you can share please?  Exciting stuff.

Also what cable are you using and what card? VRR can be picky with the cable type etc and I'd like to know what has worked for you.

Has anyone else purchased this monitor?  Im still very satisfied

I got one about a year ago now to replace a 27" CRT monitor after its grid shorted.  It took some soul searching (before giving up on cost-effectively replacing the CRT), and trying a couple of other more conventional LCDs first, but I could not be happier with the DualUp in my cab now.  Couple of additional observations I've made:

- On the obvious end, when rotated, it's about the closest match you're going to find to a 27" CRT footprint.
- While it's officially a 60hz monitor...  this monitor (or mine, at least) CAN sync to a range of frequencies and support VRR within it.  By using CRU and adding a Freesync block with a range of 45-61, then enabling VRR in AMD control panel, it is working stably at native resolution.  As long as desktop resolution is set to 61hz, and MAME resolution is set to 61hz, VRR has been working fine using mainline MAME.  I can't claim to have tried everything under the sun, but I've tested a fair number of odd rates (RType, MK, CPS1, DK), and all are syncing fine without using triple-buffering, V sync, etc. 
- It has a high enough resolution to do some very compelling CRT simulation with HLSL, too.

I was wondering why more people haven't discovered this one...  But if you need to use an LCD in a cab, it's great.

I just added 3, LED-ready, buttons (coin, 1 and 2 player start) to my USB based controller panel. My cabinet runs off the Pi 5.
I purchased a PAC drive in the hopes of making use of the LEDs.
Ideally, I'd like the buttons to illuminate based on MAME output and specifically driven by credit count or other relevant game state/output.

Since I can't use LEDBlinky and RGBCommander seems dormant, it looks like my only option is LEDSpicer for a Linux based driver.

Before posting here, I did a sanity check with ChatGPT and it seems like this is do-able (?)

On a standard monitor:

In the game options, set it to the x1 window mode, where 1 pixel on your monitor is 1 pixel in game.

Run and inject Special K, open the OSD, read the window resolution.

That is the resolution of the game. Make that as a custom resolution

I don't think the schematic is correct for the chassis. Here's a closer look at the area in question

Reckon so too, and thanks for the new pic.

Don't want you to break anything, but maybe you could pull it off to get a closer look? There could be markings on side/below we cannot see from above. You could also possibly measure it using one of those meters.

You can confirm if it is an inductor by just using your DMM in ohms mode, as described above.

If it is an inductor, the red dot suggests "2" but without more markers or clues we wouldn't know if it is 22mH or 2200mH, for example.

OTOH, on your latest photo I see there is a dot on the PCB that aligns with the red dot, so possibly just a polarity marker?

You might want to check how hot it gets when TV is powered on. In the ideal world you'd have a thermal camera or a thermal probe for a multimeter, but realistically you probably don't. Failing that, and if you are feeling brave, maybe you could carefully hold a finger nearby.

I do actually have a thermal probe for my multimeter. I'll dig into this issue again sometime this week.
