Under or Over Mount Joysticks to CP???
« on: January 16, 2010, 07:22:18 pm »
I am building my first control panel for my first of hopefully many cabinet builds. I am using 3/4 inch plywood and U360 sticks for player 1 and 2, and J-Sticks for 3 and 4. My inquiry is what would be best for the U360's, under or over mounting them and the same goes for the J-sticks.

I plan on staining the wood on the CP and placing choice decals throughout it and then sealing it. Aesthetically, would an under mount be necessary in that case? And if so, what combination of restrictors and handles would be best for it/recommended by fellow under mounters of U360's and/or J-Sticks?

I am also not sure about the 8-way, 4-way switch. (Keeping in mind the restrictor that would be used for under mounting) Can it be done through the U360's software and syncing it to Mame, or would it still need to be done via rotating restrictor? For player 3 and 4, is 8-way even necessary, not sure how many 3-4 player games that need it. If so, what is suggested that I do with the J-Sticks, restrictor and 4-8 way switch wise, considering my CP design? I do plan to allow easy access to under the CP via hinges and magnets to make any physical switching easy and to show people the innards of the beast.

Thank you for any advice given.

If your not going to use
an overlay ( control panel art, plexi)
than your going to need to under mount
the joysticks.

I over mounted my U 360, but you have
to route the top of your control panel
to get it flush.
Even if you route it perfectly, you still
have the metal base and the wood
that just doesn't look real nice.
