JUKEBOX and STRIPPING QUESTION

Hey Everyone,

For the past few days I was thinking about building a Touchscreen Jukebox. I wanted to go more with an antique old style kind of look……of course except the LCD 

I’m driving home yesterday and what do I see? EXACTLY what is was that I was looking for. RIGHT DOWN THE BLOCK FROM MY HOUSE WITH A SIGN ON IT THAT SAID FREE!!!!

As you can figure I loaded it in the truck and took off. When I got home it looks like it was a very old radio that had settings like Police, North America , South America……You have an idea how old it is now 

I started cleaning it up today and it has a shiny coat on it but what I would like to do is stain it again. How do I go about doing this?? What is the best way to finish this off?? Comments, Suggestions??

Hi Bobby115,

I have had great results on using Danish oil. I have cleaned up the timber using fine wire wool and then cleaned down with turps or white spirit.
Once dry you can apply the danish oil. I use a lot of coats applied like you would with French Polish using a cloth. I wire wool after each coat or every other coat.
The result is a silky smooth touch to the wood.

I finally got around to start the stripping process. Still have more to do but here it is so far :-)


The only thing that is a concern to me is certain spots seem really dark. Do you think that will matter with a Dark Walnut stain??

Hi Bobby,

That cabinet looks great now that you have stripped it. Finish the stripping off but I would not go for a dark stain or you will loose all the grain in the veneer.

As I said before I have had great results with Danish Oil on hardwoods. Give it a try I am sure you will be impressed with the results.

With regards to stripping old varnish etc I use a mixture of the following applied with fine wire wool:-

1 part white spirit
1 part meths
1 part boiled linseed oil
1\2 part white vinegar

Thanks buddy. Someone was also telling me I should use a Paste Wood Grain Filler for the venner.....What do you think?

Hi Bobby,
Are you talking about filling the grain or filling chips in the veneer?

You could use some filler for the chips and then sand down to the veneer. You can use a cellulose sealer on certain hardwoods but I am uncertain what would happen on veneer.
If the veneer should lift from the softwood then you would have problems.
What ever you do try it on the back of the cabinet first on a small test area.

I would avoid using a dark stain... Using an oil (like danish oil) will darken the wood somewhat, and bring out the natural grain patterns. It probably got as dark as it did over time, and will again. Are you looking to reproduce the original colour?

Wow that thing is very awesome looking.  My only suggestion is the default screen on the LCD be made into a restoration of the original bands of the radio spectrum?

Definitely restore. I used WonderFill from Rockler. That stuff rocks!

Can work to fill large cracks or, thin it just a bit and you can wipe it on to fill grain.

I'd love to have a radio shell like that! Good score!
