Semi-thin cabinet with 28" LCD based on Knievel's "The Woody"
« on: December 06, 2009, 08:38:52 pm »
I have been wanting to make a cabinet for year, but I have never found the time.  Well, when I ran across Knievel's "The Woody", I got inspired to build a cabinet.  I wanted to make it a little wider & have a coin door, so I made a few modifications...

Since I will be using a 28" 16x10 LCD, I also had to make it a slight wider.  Anyhow, I was able to get started today, and this is where I am at...

Here is a you can see the bump out for the coin door...

I am using 3/4" MDF for the sides (including the sides of the bump out) & 1/2" MDF for the front/back.  All of the parts are joined using dado joints.  I have ordered most all of my electronics, so I hope that they come in this week.  I will be using U360's & Electronic Ice buttons with RGB LED's.

That's a hell of a lot of work for one day

I'm curious about the almost vertical face of the monitor area? I am currently wiring my cabinet and I incorporated about a 30 degree angle for the monitor area and on my 30" lcd I wish I would have angled it more. I am also 6' 1" so I have to look down when I play instead of head on.

Anyways congrats and good luck

I am at little concerned about the angle of the screen too. I was going to set it on the floor, but it is too low.  I am experimenting with putting casters under it, which is why I have it sitting on the 2x4's.  If you where sitting at a bar stool, then it is perfect.  I had better elaborate on a days work... I did get all of my wood & cut a template out of 1/4" board for the sides yesterday, so technically, I started yesterday.

Well, my Logitech Z-2300's speakers & computer parts from NewEgg are all supposed to be in tomorrow, so it is looking like I am going to be able to get my speakers cut in & computer put together this weekend!  I also plan on making the bezel for the monitor, so I should have all of the construction except the CP.  I should be getting in the CP parts next week, so I guess that I have next weekend planned too.

It has been raining all weekend, so I was not able to work for very long this weekend.  I was able to get about 2 hours in before dark.  I routed out the opening for the speakers.  I have seen a few others mount their speakers like this, and I have to say that it is worth the time to do it like this, because the results look so professional.  I was able to get the backside opening about 1/32" of a inch shorter so the plastic is a very tight fight on the length of the speaker.  You can turn the board upside down & they will not fall out.  I made 2 templates for each side of the board with opening sized to use a 1/4" bit with a 7/16" collar.  I started with the smaller opening--the one that is seen from the outside & went about 1/4" deep tracing the template.  Then I flipped the board over & traced the first template on the board with a pencil. so that I would have an idea where to meet with the first cut.  Finally, I mounted my 2nd template & traced the edges, but freehanded it across the pencil line.  The cuts matched up, and then I set my depth to 7/16" to cut out the space for the grill.  Here is how it turned out...

This week is going to be crazy & it is supposed to rain, so I doubt that I will get any more done.  I was really hoping to be done with all of the wood working this weekend.  Anyhow, thanks for reading.

I have not found any time to work since last Sunday, but I have designed how I am going to mount my LCD...

This will all me to have adjustment in the screen placement in the event that I ever need to swap the monitor out for a different unit.  I will put T-Nuts in the side of the cabinet perpendicular to the middle of the monitor opening.  Then I will have about 3" of travel in & out with about 6" of travel up & down.  I will have a VESA 100x200 pattern & a VESA 100x100 pattern.
