My problem is still with the USB drive....Drive #1 (PNY 256MB) doesn't work in the Xbox but AR will transfer files to it, and drive #2 (Cruzer mini 2GB) works with the X-box, but when I try to transfer the files it crashes AR and I get a windows error report deal.  I tried this on 2 computers to see if it was computer related, but I got the same result.

I will try a Crucial stick I have....after that I will have to try a different method altogether...possibly a hot swap but I am not a fan of that option if I can avoid it.

Do you have the Cruzer MINI 2GB or the MICRO 2GB?  The Micro is listed, but not the Mini.  However, there is a 1GB MINI listed.  Bit of confusion there.  Also what OS are you using.  Are you using Vista?  If so, then just about anything can happen.  Been hearing about many problems with Vista.  Try running it on an XP system then.

The hot swap method is actually very easy.  As was mentioned above, it can be completed in 15-20 minutes and that includes the programs installing.

Hmmmm, I am still kind of leary about going this route.  I never swapped drives before with the system on and knowing my luck I probably will fry something.  I have a funny feeling though that this project will take a LONG time.  Let me explain:

As you know I had trouble with the drawer not opening properly on the first Xbox I bought.  So today I returned it and got a replacement unit.  This time I made sure the store tested it in front of me.   So I get home tonight and hook up the Xbox and get ready to test the unit out with the Agent Under Fire game I bought.   As soon as I opened the box, I realized I been dupped again!  The disk is the Platinum Hits version, but the box is the original box!  Arrrrgghhhhhh!  As far as I have been reading in terms of guides as well as what Dillon says above (nice summary BTW, Dillon), the Platinum Hits version will not work.    However, in terms of people doing the mod some have said that the Platinum Hits version WILL work.  Now I don't know what to believe.  So it looks like it to be on the safe side I am going to have to return the game to get the correct original version.   Damn, I should have examined the disc before leaving the store...so that one was my Bad.

Ginsu can you tell me what version this Xbox is?

MFG Date: 6-17-02
Serial Number: 3012431 22402
Product Id: 233 3012431 22402

Also can you tell me how to read the info so I can identify Xbox's on my own in the future?

Thanks!

Geo

Well, my saga is getting stranger.  I have attempted to use 2 different XP systems.  On both USB Stick #1 is now no longer recognized by AR at all....as if no Memcard is in.  USB Stick 2 crashes AR.  USB stick 3 acts the same as USB stick 1 where AR doesn't even see it, except the X-box reports that it has to erase the disk if I attempt to put it in there, where Stick 1 it says is no good.

I am wondering if swapping USB sticks confused AR somehow?  I am changing the Driver File specs with each disk, but now windows has 3 options for me to choose from prior to me specifying I will find my own..so Windows is remembering the drivers I try to use.

I am afraid the hotswap method is my only hope, and only 1 computer has the chance of working...my luck it won't work.

Hot swapping isn't that difficult.

I'd suggest (again) posting where you're located.  You may find someone locally who can do this for you for the price of a beer or even for free.

I am located North of Dallas, TX.  I do see services offered to do this, but I really don't mind doing it, it just seems my luck that even following the guidelines it doesn't work for me.

I will try the HotSwap method...gotta read up more about how to do it when all I want is XBMC and MAME for now.

Wouldn't this be a lot easier to do with a Datel Action Replay Max?  It comes with an Xbox1 memory card and purpose built USB memory card writer.

If you follow the instructions in the thread I posted: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263

You'll end up with UnleashX as your dashboard.  This is not a bad thing though since once you've got that up and running all you have to do is some FTPing.

From UnleashX, to get to XBMC, you'll have to FTP a program to your XBOX that has FTP access.  I know that sounds kinda weird but you'll understand in a second...  I usually just go with XBMC.  Yep, I use XBMC to install XBMC because I'm familiar with it.  :P

So you'll FTP XBMC into E:\Apps\XBMC
Restart the XBOX
From UnleashX choose XBMC in the Apps folder
Now that XBMC is up and running you will FTP into the XBOX once again and replace the contents of "E:\Dash" (which is the UnleashX dashboard) with XBMC.
IMPORTANT:
Make sure your directory structure looks like:
E:\Dash\default.xbe
and NOT
E:\Dash\XBMC\default.xbe

*note that the ".xbe" file is basically the XBOX's version of an executable or ".exe" file in windows.  Also understand that "default.xbe" isn't the only file you'll be having to move into the cleared "Dash" folder.  You will move everything from the XBMC folder into there.

I'm sure there are about a million other ways to replace UnleashX as the dash on a NDURE softmodded XBOX, for example, burning one of the various "auto-installers" that has FTP access.  Of course then you're wasting discs and whatnot and most drives just don't like to read CDrs and some even have trouble with DVDrs.

Regardless, the goal is to replace the files in E:\Dash with XBMC.

If anyone has any specific questions about hotswapping following the tutorial in the thread I posted or even wants someone to walk them through it while there doing it via AIM or some other method, I'd be glad to do so.  I just did this a few days ago so it's fresh in my memory.

Or it could have been used in the beginning and then shelved for a couple years.  Can't really tell for sure.

Ok, so it looks like I have a first run unit, version 1.0.

On both XP machines do you have the original version of XP or Service Pack 2?  You need Service Pack 2 for the USB to operate properly.

Quote
I am wondering if swapping USB sticks confused AR somehow?  I am changing the Driver File specs with each disk, but now windows has 3 options for me to choose from prior to me specifying I will find my own..so Windows is remembering the drivers I try to use.

I am afraid the hotswap method is my only hope, and only 1 computer has the chance of working...my luck it won't work.

I wonder if it could be like what the guys were saying about using a good cable.  Given your problems AND the fact that I been dupped with my Agent Under Fire disc...I am slowly debating if I should go this route myself.  Ginsu says that my replacement box is old and he is correct, it looks like a first run unit version 1.0.

So I am beginning to think that by the time I spend all the money on cables games and memory sticks I would be at the price of another Xbox in the event I blow this one up.  So the hot swap method or a chip mod may be a better answer.  Since this is a first run Xbox, it might be easier to chip mod it than a version 1.6 unit.

I don't know guys, what do you think?

Tightwad...what version is your unit?

Hot swapping isn't that difficult.

I'd suggest (again) posting where you're located.  You may find someone locally who can do this for you for the price of a beer or even for free.

I been thinking about it.  The Xbox cost me $35, right?  So now with the game, the extension cables, USB drive (as I have the same one Tightwad has), I am now looking at an expensive proposition just to get the Xbox soft modded.  So as I said above, hotswapping and chip modding is beginning to look more attractive.

So, Hoopz, what are the odds of blowing up an Xbox on a hot swap?

Another question.  After the hot swap is done and everything is running, how do you add more roms to Mame later on?  I know that with the soft mod you can use the memory stick.  Would you burn roms to a DVD and use the Xbox to load up new roms that way?

Wouldn't this be a lot easier to do with a Datel Action Replay Max?  It comes with an Xbox1 memory card and purpose built USB memory card writer.

You mean this thing?

http://www.amazon.com/Datel-Max-XBOX-Action-Replay/dp/B001T8IKFY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1262980308&sr=8-3

Look at the price.

If you follow the instructions in the thread I posted: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263

I seen that document before...in fact that is the one I feel asleep on reading.  It is like reading a phone book and it is probably just as big too.  I don't need Unleash X nor NDure.   I am interested in XBMC, but for now I am fine with CoinOPS Ignite (or the like).  This document just seems like the really really really long way to to do it.   So I am looking for something a bit more cut and dry.

Quote

I think if the hot swap method is cut and dry and there is at least a 75% chance I will NOT blow up the Xbox, then I think I might risk it.   The only thing that would hold be back is if there is a risk to the PC that your swapping too.    I might not mind if the Xbox blows up, but I would be awfully pissed if the PC blows up too.  So I am really not willing to risk the PC.

The last option would be the chip mod.  Since I have a version 1.0 Xbox AND I do have extensive soldering capabilities (I am a technician)...would this be a better option?  If so then what are the types and costs of the chips I should use?

Given my experience with soldering rate from easiest to hardest what is the best option:

1) Soft Mod using the memory stick (as I was going to do)
2) Hard drive hot swap
3) Install a mod chip.

Thanx all.

once the xbox is modded, you can FTP in to transfer files.

you are making this WAY too complicated. why dont you just paypal someone some money and buy a memcard with the exploit on it? as for AUF, Ive heard that the platinum version works just peachy

Any idea who sells these cards?  I might be interested only because I already made the cable and because my AR attempt didn't work...I know it shouldn't be this complicated!  I am not worried about bricking the Xbox really...it's a $40 purchase that came with enough other stuff that even if it fails I come out even.

I think Jukingeo and I want the same thing...a no frills MAME setup for the Xbox.  I have a version 1.6 XBox, not sure the date as I didn't write any numbers down and it isn't the one I originally purchased new.

Good to know Malenko, I'll make note of that about the AUF Platinum version.

If you're worried about complexity and risk of blowing something in the hotswap process, first thing i would suggest is getting some alligator clamps, and tie the xbox shielding to your PC shielding. This will help prevent static shorts/shocks.

Also, I'm not against the hotswap process. It's (mostly) free, and it's proven to work time and time again. I've done it, and it works. If you're gonna hotswap, i say go for it! HOWEVER, if you're confident with your soldering, you are just as well going the modchip route. 10 bucks plus shipping for a DuoX, and you'll need a CD-RW, as most drives are picky about CD-Rs (hey, you can always erase it then!). Modchips will give you greater control over the boot process, and if you pull a bonehead move and unlock your hard drive, the modchip won't fail like a softmod.

The trade offs to a chip, is it will cost you about the same, if not less, if you don't need to buy a copy of a game and a memory card/USB drive. More secure as a fail-safe. Less chance of error (again, not saying hot-swapping is faulty, but it's not without it's risks. Also, with a modchip, you install it, configure your bios to boot e:\dash\default.xbe, flash your BIOS, ftp your dash to e:\dash\, and you're done. Unless you screw up soldering, your xbox will never become a brick.

Ok, so you do that through the ethernet connection then.  Gotcha.

Didn't know that was an option.  Where would I look?

Quote
as for AUF, Ive heard that the platinum version works just peachy

I been doing some reading up on this today and I am getting mixed answers.  Many are saying it will not work, and other like yourself say it does work.

Then I found something that shed some light on scene supposedly if you have a number written on the disc at the end of all the copyright junk that is 1448517, then that Platinum Hits AUF will work, if has the number 1448527, then it will NOT work.  And lucky me, I have the 1448527 version.

I think Jukingeo and I want the same thing...a no frills MAME setup for the Xbox.  I have a version 1.6 XBox, not sure the date as I didn't write any numbers down and it isn't the one I originally purchased new.

Exactly.  That is what I am looking for too.

Good to know Malenko, I'll make note of that about the AUF Platinum version.

Well, after reading what I came across today, I am not 100% (see above).

Quote

Well it is like I said, if there is a 75% success ratio for the Xbox and 100% for the PC then I will do it.  If there is even a 10% chance I will take out my PC, then forget it.  The PC is not as expendable as the Xbox.

Quote
Also, I'm not against the hotswap process. It's (mostly) free, and it's proven to work time and time again. I've done it, and it works. If you're gonna hotswap, i say go for it!

Very much so, I make my living on soldering.

Where do I get the DuoX chip?

So from start to finish, chipping an Xbox would be considerably faster and less involved than a soft mod, correct?  I am also assuming that since I have the version 1 box that chipping it should be far easier than with the version 1.6 box, right?

Once again, is there a good guide on installing the DuoX?

Once I see some inside pictures of the XBox and how the chip is installed It would help me make a better decision.  But given the trouble Tightwad has been having and it seems like I have similar equipment to what he has, I think I am going to have the same troubles.

Tightwad, let me know what route you are going to go next.  I might follow the same path as you.  As it is I am slowly loosing confidence in the softmod/game method.  While it sounded like the best way to go because it really is very low risk, it just seems like there are quite a few variables to deal with.

One thing that is sitting over my head in terms of all the forms of modifying...with a chip mod, you can unlock the drive and upgrade it.  Given that my Xbox is a much older version it does pose the question of how long with the hard drive last.  With a chip mod, changing the drive should be easy.

Edit:

I looked up some installation guides on the Duo X.  This is the first one I found:

http://www.modchipworld.co.uk/store/duo-x_2_diagrams_v1.5.html

Are you kidding me?!?!  That looks like a walk in the park compared to the document that crash wg pointed out.   Get a load of this too.  Look at the bottom of that document, it says that if you turn the Xbox on via the eject button rather than the power button, the Xbox turns the mod chip off and you can still go on Xbox-Live.

Whoa!  I think I been barking up the wrong tree by not checking out the chips first.

If it is THAT easy, then count me in for a chip mod.

Edit:

Is this a reputable company?  Is this the chip I should get?

http://www.modchipcity.com/duox3moforxb.html

Thanx guys,

Geo

A version 1 XBOX is a cakewalk to solder a modchip in.  I had zero experience the first time I did it and it went swimmingly.  The only challenging part was the "D0" point.  It's a very small point on the board that you have to solder to.

I would say that if you're confident in your soldering skills (which you obviously are) and the softmodding stuff is getting your knickers in a twist then you should definitely go with the chip.

As for the link you provided for the chip...  I have no experience with them but like DillonFoulds said, "10 bucks plus shipping for a DuoX" is pretty much the norm and for the "no frills" type of thing you're going for you don't need whatever extras might come with a chip that cost more.

You should look for a DuoX 2.

Here's a guy that's selling them for $13 shipped to the Con-US.  Seems to have many a happy customer.  It does say on the first post "my old thread...MODS, PLEASE CLOSE." but that posting was from 2008 and if you go to the last page you'll see he's still selling them.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=666376

I contacted him to order one....for $13 it can't hurt, and I checked about a SATA-IDE adapter...I have a spare 200GB HD that won't be much use for upgrades as I would prefer a bigger drive.

There's divineo you could try out, i think they're got them for 9.99 plus tax and shipping.

Look up the alternate D0 point, and it will be a cakewalk. It's on the bottom of the motherboard, so there's a few extra screws, but it'll save you the hassle of scraping resin and risking a trace lift (doubtful you will if you're experienced soldering).
http://www.x-elixis.com/final/installation/do-point.htm - First google result of "alternate d0".

The risk to your pc is the same as the risk to you xbox, if something were to blow, it'd be a 50-50% chance it'd be one of the other.

Any hotswap guide will give you the same chances of frying something, it's just in the nature of the swap. Linking the shielding/grounding will increase your chances of success.

If you guys would like, I'll bust open one of my xboxes and snap a few pictures for you all. Would you guys like me to repost my above post in a new thread, and maybe we'll flesh it out to a more definitive guide, perhaps?

I think the guide that Ginsu, crashwg, and I've linked to is fine.  The first post covers all of the details.  Yes it gets long and convoluted, but the first and only first post gives you everything you need to do it.  The Q&A after it may be beneficial if and only if someone encounters a problem.  I don't mean to sound like an ass though.  I'm not good at soldering so the hotswap was the easiest method for me.  Literally, the first time I did it, it took 20 minutes.  No mess, no problems.

No knickers in a twist...just listening to the voice of experience.  Tightwad is having trouble and it does sound like he is using similar stuff to what I have.  Just in my case I was fortunate that I didn't get the cable as of yet.  I been dupped on the game.  Lets  just say I am pretty good at listening to a bad vibe and as they say all the time in Star Wars, "I get a bad feeling about this".

As for the D0 point, I looked at it...no problem, the trace is wider than the ic next to it and I HAVE soldered #30 wire to a lead that size before.  So D0 should be a cake walk.

Quote
As for the link you provided for the chip...  I have no experience with them but like DillonFoulds said, "10 bucks plus shipping for a DuoX" is pretty much the norm and for the "no frills" type of thing you're going for you don't need whatever extras might come with a chip that cost more.

So far I have not seen it for that price, but $20 is still fine.

Quote
You should look for a DuoX 2.

Ok, so the DuoX 2 is better than the DuoX 3?  I see the '3' more often though.

Yes, I just was looking over the site and so far the pricing is good.  I will give him an EM for $13, can't beat that.  I certainly seems cheaper than the current soft mod route I am on.   Good thing I didn't cut into the Xbox extension cable I bought!

I contacted him to order one....for $13 it can't hurt, and I checked about a SATA-IDE adapter...I have a spare 200GB HD that won't be much use for upgrades as I would prefer a bigger drive.

LOL!  I guess you saw that price too and jumped.  However, you mentioned you had a version 1.6 box.  That one is harder to get a chip into (from what I read).  For me I am basically using the older version to my advantage and that is why I feel at this point I think it probably would be easier to get the mod chip.   The directions to install it are just a few paragraphs long...sure beats that  mile long document that was posted earlier.

There's divineo you could try out, i think they're got them for 9.99 plus tax and shipping.

Do you have a link?

Is that the alternate point in that link?  But I have repaired pretty fine traces before.  I fix digital pianos and many times a customer spills something into the keybed and then all of a sudden a section of keys stops playing.  What I find is that cola had seeped down onto the key matrix board and eaten away a trace or two.  So I do end up scraping the fine traces and soldering a #30 wire in place to jump the gap.  So I think I should be good with D0.

Yeah, that isn't good.  If I had a spare PC around (well actually I do but they are all Windows 98, I only have two XP machines and I am not risking them)

That does sound like a plan.  What would be good is too is for the those that still want to do the soft mod is to try to condense that behemoth that Crash posted.   Your post did well to give us the 'abridged' version.   So it would be cool if there was a good thread on the mods.

Since it is clear that both Tightwad and myself are going to go the hard mod route and it does seem like that is the easiest one to write up, lets start with that one.   I think it would be cool if you started with the cover of the Xbox off and then "zoom" in to the connection points to where the mod chip will be installed.  Anyway, not telling you what to do, I am sure you can do great writing it up your own way...it's just a suggestion.

I think the guide that Ginsu, crashwg, and I've linked to is fine.  The first post covers all of the details.  Yes it gets long and convoluted, but the first and only first post gives you everything you need to do it.

Oh yeah, I am not saying it isn't fine or 'bad', however, I am just looking for the 'condensed' or abridged version because I just don't have the patience to read through all of that.

Quote
The Q&A after it may be beneficial if and only if someone encounters a problem.  I don't mean to sound like an ass though.

Oh, not at all, I would never think that.  I know you guys are helping out and trust me I tremendously appreciate it.  It is just me though.  I saw what Tightwad was going through, I saw the length of that guide and I thought to myself, if I am going to invest all the time to read that, pay good money to get all the materials and then something still doesn't go right...I would be mighty pissed to the max.  Given that the mod chips isn't like $40 or more, I think it would be the better and more then likely cheaper bet.

Quote
I'm not good at soldering so the hotswap was the easiest method for me.  Literally, the first time I did it, it took 20 minutes.  No mess, no problems.

That is understandable.  While I wasn't born with the silver soldering iron in my mouth, I came damn close.  I was soldering and kit building when I was 9 years old.  And I haven't put down the soldering iron yet.  So in terms of installing a chip, I have the advantage over some here.  I have more confidence in my soldering ability than trying to switch a hard drive while everything is turned on.

I know initially I was a bit leary about doing the chip mod because I HAD a version 1.6 unit, and many are complaining that it is very difficult to solder in that version.  BUT now that doesn't apply anymore because I have a version 1 unit.

So I guess it is a go for the hard mod.  I will contact the fellow that is selling those chips and place an order for one.

Once again thanx for the info guys!

Oh! Almost forgot, I changed the subject title around a bit so it starts with "Xbox mod" first.    Also in the context of that title, once I get the mod going I would like to take it all the way up to installing Mame.

Tightwad, are you going the XBMC route to Mame or are you more interested in putting your console in a cabinet like I am?  If it is the latter then perhaps we should both use CoinOps Ignite for Mame.

Here is what it looks like:

The XBox may be a temporary Mame platform for me....I am building a Cabinet...I still have to figure out how to integrate the controls into the Xbox...I planned to use a keyboard and computer...so that will probably be my end state.  The good thing is I can do both...just takes some doing.

The CoinOps looks cool, I will have to read up on that more.

4 USB drives...so far I can't get Action Replay to transfer to the 2 bigger drives, the one smaller drive the Xbox doesn't like, and one drive AR can't seem to see....I a sure given enough drives I could get it to work, but 4 is all I have or can afford to buy (you can never have too many USB drives really).

I am not too afraid of soldering, even the 1.6 board.  It takes an adapter, but that is included in the $13 price, and just takes some modding.  I have replaced surface mount resistors on motherboards before where I accidentally scraped them off, so I am sure I can handle this one.

I got it!

Well, I got the Xbox to finally recognize the files...kids were watching a movie so I didn't proceed the rest of the way yet.  The key for me was USB try #5....a 128MB sandisk SD card in a cheap adapter I got from DealExtreme or some such...been sitting in my junk box for a couple years because 128MB just wasn't useful enough.

I figured if my 256MB card worked, but both bigger drives (2GB and 4GB) would lock up...maybe a smaller drive would be easier....worked first try after changing the driver file of course.

Still going to get the mod chip I think, always wanted to try one and I also want to use a bigger drive for emulator storage.

Can't comment on that particular build. I never got in to mame until just recently when I started my first cab.

As for the DuoX2, there is no DuoX3. The chips are built by Team Omega. The Duo3 is a ps2 modchip. DuoX series is for xbox and DuoQ is for gamecube. I also notice that they've got a wii chip out, although that's pretty much useless now.

You'll probably need to use Xbins.  Make sure you follow the rules.  You'll get kicked out for a day or two if you don't.   ::)

Here's a link to how to use it:  http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/xbins.php

Here's what was posted earlier about it too from DillonFoulds:

Xbins
- EVERYTHING that you'll need to download for xbox modding will be on XBINS. EVERYTHING. PERIOD. Softmod packages, Bios files (for your modchips), dashboards, emulators, apps like ConfigMagic. EVERYTHING is there.
- Go to their IRC channel (#xbins on EfNet), you'll need an IRC client installed, such as mIRC
- type !list and hit enter, you'll get login information for the xbins FTP site, as well as the XBMC FTP site.
- Go nuts with your favourite FTP client!

Thanks!  I installed MAMEoX last night, with a few Roms I had already.  It was a bit confusing understanding how/where to put the files.  I created an "Emulator" folder, and put my MAMEoX folder inside, which had a "rom" folder in it.  I was expecting to need to do some more to configure, but when I went tho the "Games" tab, it was there!  I ran it, played a bit of Arkanoid, then finally called it a night at 3am.

Still not sure how it worked...seems a bit like magic!  I assume if I want to get rid of it I can just strip the MAMEoX folder off the hard drive and it will go away.  I will look into X-bins now (or a bit later, gotta do some garage cleaning so I can start my Cab build!)

wanna see how I modded my first XBOX?

64 total solder points with a Radio shack iron on a brand new $250(?) XBOX. if you wanna mod stuff, you gotta grow a pair.

64 solder points and $250, I would say you got lucky that you didn't blow anything up.

Can't be afraid to screw things up, that's for sure!  I am not afraid to try just about anything, but with so many choices it sure has been helpful to get concentrated opinions and feedback.

I always was more on the careful side and many times I double or even triple check my work.  Many might think I am overdoing it, but perhaps it does have something to do with getting a high success ratio.  Generally when I build kits, they work first time 98% of the time.

I guess since that now I have the older version of the Xbox, my confidence is increased since that particular version is pretty easy to work on.

Weighing the actual procedure to get a modded box, it looks like the softmod side weighs heavy indeed in comparison to just soldering a chip in.

This is interesting news, but congratulations on getting it going!  You might be on to something with the smaller drive.  The drive size might be too big for the Xbox to properly recognize or format.  For the San Disk 4gb Cruzer they even recommend breaking that down into partitions.   I was wondering if you could try something out.  Try breaking up that 2gb Cruzer you have into 256mb sections for the first gig.  Then assign one of those for the Xbox partition.  If then the Cruzer is recognized and you can move files to and fro then you are good to go.   The reason why I mention this is because I remember working with video files not to long ago and with a FAT32 system (which is what the Xbox wants), the files couldn't be any larger than 2gig.  If they were they wouldn't transfer.  I had to set up my drive for NTSF so the full video file would transfer.

If this is indeed the case, then a sticky note should be made about it because memory sticks aren't getting smaller, they are getting bigger and bigger.

As for the DuoX2, there is no DuoX3. The chips are built by Team Omega. The Duo3 is a ps2 modchip. DuoX series is for xbox and DuoQ is for gamecube. I also notice that they've got a wii chip out, although that's pretty much useless now.

www.divineo.com

Perhaps that was it.  It was a Duo3 I was looking at by mistake.   Anyway, thanx for the link, I will check it out.

Gotcha.  So this Xbins site has everything then.

Since I am going to shift gears for the chip mod once that is done then I only need XBMC and CoinOps Ignite, right?

If MAMEoX follows the same directory structure Mame for PC does, then all you really have to do is put your roms in the roms folder, the snapshots in the snapshots folder, cabinet pix in the cabinet pix folder and so on and so forth. Since I am already an avid user of Mame that should be straight forward.   I believe that in terms of the Xbox, MAMEoX and CoinOPS provide the front end needed to select games.  In the PC world setting up your front end could be a big pain in the neck.  So perhaps those programs help to make setup easier.

My goal is to go and use CoinOps for Mame as that program seems to cater to cabinets.

Anyway, if you get a shot see if you can do that as I mentioned above with breaking those other memory sticks down in partitions (particularly the Cruzer 2gig stick).   If it works then I MIGHT still consider the soft mod.  But given the low price on the chip and the fact that I have the earlier version of the Xbox, I think it is in my best interest to hard mod this box.   Since it is old, I don't know the longevity on the hard drive and with a hard mod, the door is open for me to swap out the hard drive for a bigger one if I want to.

I just remembered something that is important for you Jukingeo, having a version 1.0 XBOX and all...  The 1.0 is the only version of the XBOX that has a GPU fan and it is notorious for becoming extremely loud and crapping out.  If your XBOX starts to get loud that's the first place you should look.  The fan is extremely small and as far as I know, not a normal form factor, at least I've never seen a fan like it other than on a 1.0 XBOX.  You might have luck trying to fit another fan on when it goes or you could do what I did which was get a GPU heat sink from a non-1.0 and swap it in.

Oh, and not it matters so much now since you've all but made the decision to go hard-mod, but one of those spare win98 boxes would probably work just fine for the hot-swap.  You'd just make the disc on your newer pc then load it up in the old one for the hot-swap.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Ehhh, I am not worried.  My company has a Mouser account.  We can get just about anything from them.  I am sure they have the fan.  Luckily the fan IS working.

Ok, gotcha.  I know most might be comfortable with the hot swap, and that might be an option I might still consider if I get a 1.6 Xbox again.  But I think that because I have an older one, I am going to take advantage of the chip mod for this unit.

Thanx,

wanna see how I modded my first XBOX?

64 total solder points with a Radio shack iron on a brand new $250(?) XBOX. if you wanna mod stuff, you gotta grow a pair.

64 solder points and $250, I would say you got lucky that you didn't blow anything up.

I disagree. I read the guides and took my time, and what I did was infinitely moe complex then what you are trying, and it worked. There is a fine line between believing in luck and having some faith in your ability.

I don't know how to create partitions and only assign one of them to the Xbox...and in any case I don't need it now of course, as I have a trusty 128MB card with the USB adapter.  If you would like to try the soft mod I can send it to you...I think I am in it about $8 for the adapter I bought....the card was from a woot Bag of Crap or something, so value there is basically nothing.

Lol then you saw this online after burning your fingers...?  :laugh2:

You will need .84 roms for MamedoX

CoinOPS is miles better though.

Congrats on getting it soft modded.  :applaud:

What version roms do you need for CoinOPS?

BTW, thanx for the info on your avatar.  I got a really cool idea of what to do for Halloween!  Heh Heh Heh.

Geo

Hehe nice one mate perfect for halloween!

I do not know what version of Mame for CoinOPs, as the games look slightly altered (to probably play faster?) or are hacks.  I got the entire 4gb image from an interesting site and via rapidshare.  That should be enough clues.... :o

naw, they didnt invent solderless modchips till way after I modded mine. thats an original Enigmah chip =)

but yeah they just keep makin it easier and easier. Also, for the record, I never had much luck with the solderless chips, they tend to shift or scrape traces, of course the XBOX I have now is softmoded with a 120GB HD and its nice and cozy sitting in a plastic tub, lol

Well, for the average it is luck.  Unless of course you are like me and solder often.  Even still, I have my qualms about tearing into something that is $250.  With my first Playstation, I waited until the price came down and even then I bought a used one for less than $60 to do my first mod.  I am NOT a risk taker, some people are.

What would be the cost shipped to 11741?

In EE you said to watch the video with the lights on, Nuh uh.  TURN THEM OFF!  Anyway, it did give me a good idea of what to do for Halloween.   That IS one of the better avatars that I have seen in a long time.  I don't care for those that get gross or gory, but this is just plain scary.

Really?  Usually Mame is mame.  I don't know if something changes the clock frequency though.  That is possible, but I have not encountered anything like that.  I am sure there would be complaints to the creator of CoinOPS.

Is that what that is?  A solderless modchip.

Yeah, I figured those would cause loads of problems.  Well, since I can solder anyway, I wouldn't go that route.

I thought you needed a chip mod to change the hard drive out?  You can do it with a soft mod?

Thanx,

Geo

There's a hotswap method, it's pretty straight forwards, power on the xbox, open an app to format drives, hotswap drives, format and lock, hotswap back to stock, open your ftp app, hotswap, ftp the files to the new hard drive, and you're set. I'm sure xboxHDM has tools to do it in dos as well, as long as your have your motherboard's hard drive key.

$10 shipped USPS first class would cover it, although I am sure you could do the same thing yourself...just look for an older camera with a removable SD card to try it...doesn't cost anything.
