How do I make curved corners on my control panel?
« on: December 15, 2009, 12:09:56 pm »
Hello everyone.   I'm working on creating a new control panel.   I have the box entirely created, but now I'd like to finish up the actual control panel board the controls will go on.   I have the wood cut to be the size I want it to be, but I need to curve the corners.   I've attached a picture of what I mean.    I don't need the top part to look like it does in the picture.   I just want the plain curves, like on the bottom two corners in the picture, on all four corners of my piece of wood.

How do I do this?    I have a router and a router table.    I would assume that these tools would work, but I'm just not sure how to start.    I also have a router bit set with about 40 different bits in there.

Is there some sort of template I can buy at the store to do this?   Or what?   Any help would be appreciated!

with freehand routing, templates usually come in handy but in many cases, you have to make one.

an alternative if you don't have a template is to draw/trace the line onto the wood and carefully cut with your router near the line but slightly off the line.  then use some sandpaper to true it up to the line.  Just make sure to go slow and don't push too hard or let the blade catch and then ruin your piece.

another option is a jig saw.  While I actually used this for my control panel side template for my cocktail cabinet, the template turned out nice too. :) I followed the same process of cutting near the line and then sanding it with a piece of sand paper wrapped around a small wood block (to keep the side flat).

Thanks for the info.    I was looking around online before you posted to see if I could buy some sort of template.

Do you think that something like the templates here would work?
http://routertemplate.net/circle.html

Specifically the "Medium Convex:  Overall size 11½ x 9” one"?     It seems to me that this is the sort of thing that you could clamp onto the bottom of the wood, and then maybe use a flush bit on my router to follow along the pattern.   Making sure that the roller on the router bit runs along the template.    Does that seem right to everyone?  And if so, are there any negatives to using something like this that you can think of?

Whoops!   I apparently didn't search properly before posting.   I see this post now regarding the same thing I want to do.   I will post my question there.    Sorry about the duplicate...
