Hi All,

I bought an empty Tempest cabinet and want to setup a MAME rig to only play tempest..

Here's what I have:

A mini ITX Celeron 1.6 ghz w/256 meg ram (has serial and 2 usb)
optipac and an ipac (both original type)
Tempest control panel
New arcade chassis vga/svga 19" monitor (mounted already)

What I really want is DOS or Linux that can just boot right into the Tempest multigame rom and nothing else

Would be nice if the OS didnt need to be shut down (like DOS) and just the main on/off would work.. but a power off button would be fine too.

Any Ideas?

I used to build ArcadeOS rigs years ago, but dont really have and old MB and ISA sound cards laying around.. and I know there are no DOS drivers for the mini ITX board

Help!

Bryan

Why not restore it back to being a Tempest if that is all you are going to play?  I've never seen Tempest look good on anything but a vector display.  Would likely look better on a modern high resolution display than what you are using if you are set on using Mame.

Do you have the original spinner and spinner knob? You can hack the spinner with a mikesarcade trackball adaptor and give you 3 mouse buttons to play with. If you can find a real bright 19" crt, Tempest should look pretty decent, don't even consider an lcd, it'll never look good for a color vector IMO. Mounting the monitor will be fun, I'm not even sure a 19" VGA will fit into the opening for the monitor, if it does fit, it'll be real tight.
Depending how original you want Tempest to play, you may consider an ledwiz for the start buttons flashing and give you inputs for the two coin switches.
I don't know how to do "shelling", I wish there were easy instructions for running guimame...

you could maybe create a linux live CD and even create a bootable usb key if wanted(there is some info on the advancemame website on creating the live cd) and
use advancemame - it wouldnt be that hard to do.I use advancemame under dos/pc but
have never managed to get on board sound working. only using
a ISA card did i have any luck,I have heard it is possible to get some boards built in sound to work - i myself
couldnt - could get a pci card working but only with certain boards(for me that was a sblive and
asus p4c deluxe P4 board that worked in dos).

if i was you ,if you want a dos based system i'd just buy a ISA soundcard and motherboard with ISA slot off ebay, would cost next to nothing,
any speed system would run tempest pretty well, otherwise a linux system would be the only way i think to get sound working without windows.

Hi all, thanks for the replies

The monitor I have is plenty bright and MAME looks good on it playing Tempest at the higher resolution

Cosmetically the Tempest I have is complete except the tinted glass.

Cabinet was missing the monitor, boards and PS.

I wont have that much money in getting it going with a PC. Finding a color vector thats working and such, plus the boards and PS. Would be cheaper to find a working Tempest

I really like AAE, but it doesnt allow any customization

I guess I will try an advancemame setup from USB. The computer doesnt have an optical drive

Any ideas???

Thanks

you can set up your pc to boot tempest directly using advacecd installed on a usb stick, im pretty sure your pc boots from usb, and advance cd its the most compatible with hardware, yu can also use dos, but you would have to have a compátible soundcard.
