using commandline version of mame, it creates a file called "mame.ini" if you doubleclick on it it will open up in notepad. scroll down to a setting called "resolution", the default is "auto", I found changing that to "800x600" or "640x480" will eliminate out of range errors. But, then you don't have original resolutions. This is all trial and error for me, can't explain why.
