4:3 Monitors, where did they go?
« on: October 17, 2009, 02:36:33 am »
Does anyone know a good place to get 4:3 computer monitors in 20-26" size without spending $800 or more? It seems like these monitors have become extinct, and I couldn't bring myself to use a widescreen monitor on my arcade.

NEC have a couple of 21" 4:3 LCD monitors that are still available. They may have been discontinued - I don't know - but you can still buy them in the region of $400-$500.

And don't forget you can do something with a bezel.
The 21.3 inch 1600x1200 ones are still made, but are VERY expensive.
The 20 inch 1600x1200 ones have a much better price. Search for a HP LP2065 or a Dell 2007. They are IPS screens with good viewing angles and perfect for vertical mounting too.
If you want bigger, the LG2600W and the DELL 2709W are great. You can feed them 1600x1200 as well, and they will have black bars. Under tinted glass, or with black paint outside the 4:3 area on normal glass, they will have a 22,5 or 24 inch 4:3 size.
And if you don't give ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about viewing angles, you can always toss in a 28 inch TN HannsG or one of those cheap-ass 26 inch TN screen from IIyama, and Samsung.
Forget about the 240,260HD series from samsung though, they are horrible on the input-lag.
Nice to know: TN panels from 24 inch and upward are not better in regards to input lag than IPS panels. Some IPS panels like the mentioned LG 26 inch are even better than most TN panels in this aspect. Small TN panels use dithering for colors, which does not add to the delay. Bigger TN panels have PWM modulation to go from 6-bit to 8-bit/channel like colours, and that adds much to the delay.
In a gaming perspective you can roughly say for input lag:
WORST:
Panels with Tuners/TV's (3-5 frames lag)
SPVA panels (around 3 frames lag)
S-IPS/ TN>=24 inch (1-2 frames lag)
Small TN panels (almost lag-free)
CRT (direct draw of the image signal)
BEST
