Cube Quest ?

The laser disk were analog data, some some stuff is lost when comverting to digital (both mame and daphne).

Mame is compressed, but it's sampled at a higher res, and it's a lossless compression.

The Mpegs are compressed with a lossy compression, and are sampled at the DVD resolution.

Besides that some games have a few mpegs versions out there of differenting quality (self converted, retail dvd, and HD versions), and cube quest is not in daphane, the video quality in general isn't very different between mame and daphane.
I'm not saying they're exactly the same: they're not.  In some places most people can't tell the difference, in other you can see the differences, and of course the HD version is higher quality than the original arcades so is better image quality than mame.  Some games run only in mame, but more run only in daphane. but the games that are in both, technically mame is slightly higher quality.

Never the less, mame needs more CPU power than daphane, more hardrive throughput, and more disk space.

That surprises me.  I'm running Firefox with MAME .128 or .129 (whichever was the first version that played it) on my P4 3ghz and it runs at 100%.  It was my understanding that Firefox just needed a speedy harddrive (like 7200 rpm), rather than a blazing CPU.

On the other hand, Cube Quest *IS* CPU intensive, so that one will require a better CPU.

Daphne Simulates

MAME Emulates.

Cube Quest has a lot of processors that MAME has to emulate and I believe the Daphne Team do not have the resources or capability to get a game like Cube Quest running in Daphne.  Firefox is different, but follows the same argument. Firefox is complex.

I would add ALG games into this discussion, as there has been an Amiga emulator that would be available for the Daphne Team to utilise, unfortunately there has been no effort for the Daphne Team to accomplish this.

To give them their fair dues, they have simulated several laserdisc games, all working within a cabinet or PC.  Yet I feel MAME will assimilate Daphne in the not too distant future.

The collection of a few dedicated programmers versus hundreds of talented coders, the odds of getting such a project completed is higher with MAME IMHO.

I would not count the Daphne Team completely out, as I bet they have plenty of projects in the pipeline, to keep their hobby alive, and I'm sure we are all grateful for all their hard work to bring Dragon's Lair into our cabinets.

Cubequest for sure needs more cpu.  P4 2.8 ghz is running it at 70%.

I dunno if I was gettin that much on mine. I don't play LD games all that much anyways, though, and when I do Daphne is quite fine for those I do play.
