Paypal users, i need some advice. please help.
« on: September 25, 2009, 06:06:58 pm »
Hey guys, just looking for some advice , heres my situation:
I still need to fix my bike, long time ago but im still trying to get the money, anyway, i placed an add at craigslist, for an old school boombox that i have, an old lasonic trc-931 that its working just fine and that only have minor cosmetic  stuff, and i really mean'it. anyway i got an email from a guy from canada, hes willing to pay for shipping, so at first i though it was a scam but the guy offer me to pay me with paypal. So heres what i need help with; i dont use paypal much to sell , i buy alot from ebay and never had a problem.
If i get the payment from the guy, then i ship the boombox, can the guy revert the payment and screw me up? or what other options do have to protect my self? thanks for any help.

The best way to do it, is IMHO, to sell it to him, receive the money first make sure you have it, I like to transfer it to my bank at that point, and then ship the item to him. That way there is a lesser risk to you the seller because you have the money and now can ship it in confidence. Just make sure to document what your selling, and what the condition is and all so that if there is a hint of problems he can not come back later and try and get his money back for whatever reason. That is just my paranoid idea.

you both would need a confirmed address and email to be covered as a seller

you must also be able to prove the item was delivered with tracking or a signature

dont hurt to ask the person if they can show some form of feedback either

He can and may revert the payment and screw you up.

I was selling on ebay and had a guy who screwed me because I wouldn't sell him an additional item outside ebay.  He opened a dispute, escalted it 10 minutes later, then filed a SNAD claim with Paypal.
Shipped me back an empty box and got his money back.
I did tracking and everything suggested so far but he still kept the game and got his money back.

Paypal has no real protection for the seller, only the buyer.

Don't deal with the guy unless you find a safe way to cover your ass unless you can afford to lose your money.

My opinion based on experience.

Good luck!  ARCADIAC!

The only sure way to be safe is to have the guy send you a money order or cashiers check.

ebay sales and outside of ebay sales are two very different policy's for both sellers and buyers.

Whatever, I posted my experience, not yours.
I'll never take a risk and trust Paypal to protect me as a seller again.
I don't use them as a seller if I can avoid it, they have too much control over the account I use for business.
I've had funds frozen because some jackoff didn't check their warehouse to see if they received a shipment from me as well.
---I'm attempting to get around the autocensor and should re-read the rules!--- Paypal.

Im honest with the guy about the selling, but yea, i dont trust paypal much to protect myself, so i guess ill have to go with a money order or casier check, thanks for all of the opinions.

Last I checked, Paypal required a 7 day wait to escalate a claim. I should know, because I had a deadbeat ebay buyer, and I was pissed that I had to wait 14 days to close the case and get my final value fees back. I had to eat listing fees.

He called me at home after 9 PM (I wasn't there) filed around 10 PM and escalated within 10 minutes, that's what happened.  I did not have time to respond.  Spent several hours with Paypal customer service to no avail.
That's my experience regardless of what you may believe.  All he had to do was send a package back (booklet and box, no game) with tracking, which he did and Paypal refunded his money.
Looking back at this guys history after the fact he had done this before.  I got no satisfaction from Paypal on Ebay regading the issue even though he sent all his offers for the item he wanted to buy outside of ebay through the My Messages feature.  They wouldn't even review that.

So again, do what you want I'm not gambling any money on Paypal or Ebay at this point, I don't have the time or energy to set up mutiple accounts just to insure I don't get ---fouled up beyond all recognition---, I'd rather deal with more reputable companies, I'm done.

Bottom line is if your gut tells you something is wrong with a buyer, don't deal with them, don't ignore your instincts.

BTW, to get a little insight on this scam, go to the discussion boards on Ebay, sellers section, this scam is well known there.

Good Luck,
ARCADIAC
