Author Topic: Whats a good fighting game to get good at? (Read 3733 times)

I've never been too big into the fighting-game scene (Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, etc etc), however I did get a little into the Dreamcast version of Soul Calibur.

Now thought I'm building a cabinet for myself I would like to start getting good at these fighting games (specifically Marvel vs Capcom or something like that).

In order to get good at the joystick controls (eg. getting good at these type of games), should I play something else first, or should I just play MvsC over and over?

Also, I'm not sure if it matters but I'll probably be using J-stick joysticks (unless somebody recommends something else for me).

In my opinion, you're headed for big virtual scars and trouble!

I sugest games like those you wrote and also WWF wrestlemania!

It's fun, it's hard and it's very good graphicaly!

About the joys, i think mostly is up to you but if you're totally out of ideas, take a peak at oscar's page and see the Joystick reviews!

Some characters (like Ken and Ryu) really never change their moves, but characters (like Chun-Li) are constantly changing their moves from game to game. I'd recommend picking the newest version of Street Fighter you can run well. Marvel vs Capcom is good too, but it doesn't have my favorite characters (Ken and Cammy). Sakura is awesome, too, but only in the more recent games. She sucked when she first came out. Anyways...

No point in learning Mortal Kombats because I'm not sure Midway even has plans for another one in the arcades after they went to console. Plus the characters are always changing, anyways.

I would play the early versions of Street Fighter II and master the basic moves. Characters moves do change, but once you get the basic moves down...Fireball, Uppercut etc...then you will find that a lot of the newer fighting games have the same basic movements and it is easier to pick up. Just my 2 cents.

sf2. it is the most basic, and every arcade i hav been in since 1995 has had one. plus, if you master sf2, fighting games as a whole will be a lot easier.

Hey AlanS17... something I found (maybe you know) is a trick in MvsC that allows you to change Ryu into Ken... sort of. When fighting as ryu roll forward-down-back and hit the middle punch button... he'll change his costume to red and his arm will fire up... now you're essentially ken... i think it even has his voice. Unfortunately you have to do that every time you start a new fight. (You can also change to Akuma and back to Ryu with the other punch buttons.)

I was SOOO much happier with Marvel v Capcom after I found that out.... until then I just played Marvel v SF.

My opinion is to play SF2: CE and probably X-men: CoTA to get started... I don't know when the air blocking came in, but I'm still not used to that. Also, you may try SSF2 also as I think that's when the multi-hit combos started appearing in the capcom games. Where the heck is Snaaake... he's supposed to be the bomb-diggety at these games... of course I 0wn at SF in my house / parties. No one knocks me off the cabinet until i want to leave. (But don't let my friends know that, they'll stop playing me.)

P.S. Who else hates the chick saying "let's go crazy" when you insert a quarter into MvC? ME ME ME!!!

Oh yeah... I beat the shizzle out of my control panel the other day when I got screwed over by the ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- computer in MvC... and the panel took it. I felt bad when I realized I was trying to break my own creation, but felt good that it took it so well. Anybody else done this?

I would say to master Killer Instinct, but it doesn't really matter anymore. I thought it was a GREAT game, but they aren't making any sequels and they're becoming more and more Rare. (HA! Rare! You get it? Maybe not...)

Nobody beats me in that game, though... So don't yall even go thinking that you can.

i tend not to play MvC because you can get good or at least decent in it to take on the computer but just when you think you can handle whatever the game throws at you, capcom throws onslaught. i've only manage to beat him once in the arcade and i'm not even sure how i was able to do it. he is by far the cheapest and overpowered character ever. so heres my suggestion: play the other capcom "vs" series games but give MvC a try to see how hard onslaught really is. If you have MvC2 for home, play that since Abyss is a much funner boss to fight.

I honestly like the Street Fighter EX series, but not alot of other people do. It brings together the awesome graphics of games like the Tekken series with the good moves of the Street Fighter series. Most people don't play it long enough to realize there is a totally different system to fighting, though. They have alot of the same characters with the same moves, but they can link and connect special moves. It's really pretty cool!

I don't like cheap MvsC combos where you knock them up in the air and hit them or whatever (damn you Spiderman), but I do like the EX series. It's emulated through Zinc quite faithfully.

Plus my favorite EX character (Pulum Purma) can't be found in any other SF series, and Chun Li is powerful again! That hasn't been the case since SF Championship Edition!

I'm not a big Tekken fan, either... but it's better than Virtua Fighter!

Howard is just saying that cuz he knows I'll whoop him in KI. I'd even let him choose my character.

hah, ever played vf4? makes tekken4 look and play like crap. anyway, vf2 and vfkids were two of the best 3d fighters ever! bring on the flames!

I remember the first time I played Virtua Fighter years ago... (It was also the last.)

Either way, it's another series you don't have to bother learning how to play.

I like the Soul Edge/Blade/Caliber series too. And Rival Schools is alot of fun.

What I find odd, is that I'm actually agreeing with you. I don't like KI or Tekken. At all. In fact, I don't really like the 3D fighters very much either. SF EX is okay, but nothing compares to 2D fighters. I just played Waku Waku for the first tonight - man is that awesome!

It's not the 3D that makes SF EX special to me. It's the linking special moves that's so cool. If they made a 2D fighter like that I would be happy.

However, I do like the Soul *insert end here* series. Those are fun.

Every fighter after mk1 and sf2 basically ripped off those two and the result were more and more watered down games.

The ultimate result of this process is the doa and soul series. They are ripoffs of ripoffs of ripoffs of ripoffs. The end prodcut is a game that while technically speaking plays well, has unoriginal moves, unoriginal characters and ultimately unoriginal gameplay.

The only 3d fighter I have ever considered good is mortal kombat deadly alliance. 3d fighters=crap.

Just my opinion though.

Now the virtua fighter series is unique, I'll give it that. But blocky, lifeless, characters that lack true special moves ain't my cup of tea. Tekken is basically a high res version of vf, so I don't see how you can dislike one and like the other.

Hm.. I don't like the VF, MK, KI, or DoA series, but like the GG, SF, Tekken, and Soul series.. I am a consumer whore, at least Namco and Capcoms'

.. still want an MK2 PCB, though

You know what i just remembered....

A really great fighting game in the arcade was MACE came out at the same time as Wargods. Very underated 3d fighting game. Lots of fun plus MK style fatalities.

Kind of a mix between MK and KI. Not sure if its mamed though.

I was made by Atari and was ported out for N64 but it was much better at arcade. Every character had weapons. I used to rock it all the time when i worked at an arcade. The executioner charter is kick ass.

(Sidenote - it's a pretty machine. Wonder why it didn't get more popular. I guess there's already a corner on the fighting game market.)

Here are my favorites

2D:

SF2 - specifically Super StreetFighter II Turbo X Grand Masters
SF3: 3rd strike is awesome and we play it all the time at work

3D

Soul Blade/Calibur 1&2 with probably the Dreamcast Calibur really up there.

I just thought that this series is the best in terms of depth and artwork/style. It's so easy for Noobs and the veterans to really have fun.

Of mention are Tekken, VF as well... I also hear good things about Project Justice, Tech Romancer,

NOTE: I'll mention also mention my obscure titles Tobal #2!!!!! and the 2D NEC SuperCD Godzilla fighting game!

Seriously, tho, me being the fighter newb I am, I just discovered the cool capcom vs snk. It's pretty nice, I'm sure the 2nd one is better, but I can't play that on my cab. The intro movie is a little silly, but I get excited everytime I hear "CAPCOM! vershussss...S N K!"

as far as i know, capcom vs snk was a dreamcast only release....

If they managed to port it to the ps1, the port must totally suck. (It's a HUGE game)

Not really.. he's probably right about the sucking.. 2D fighting game ports without all the frames of animation suck (and PSX didn't have enough RAM for it).

My friends were always Street Fighter freaks, and they would always ---smurfette--- about the animations and the resulting effect on gameplay on the PSX ports. From what little I played on PSX (I had me a Saturn + 4MB, baby

), this seems accurate :/

btw, the trick to most of these games (against the computer) in getting good at blocking...

Against others its getting super moves off... And memorizing characters/moves.

But getting good at SF(any) and MK(any) are good starts. MK blocking is different.. plus you take damage. So good to know how to get a quick shot in..

SF's, I like the EX series... why? I never played them before! They really play great!

Many like the KOF'ing... I don't... Never did. What its great for is when friends come over. We are all on level playing fields. Not much fun playing SF with them because I destroy them...

btw, getting good doesn't mean that you will be having more fun. I really like playing games where we are just trying to find a special move... any special move... before the other does...

Beasteriozor whatevern (Zinc) is also VERY fun!

Gauntlet on stun and hurt levels is fun with free tokens!

I usually find that people who obsess over a particular game, play it and play it and play it over and over,
for the sole purpose of being able to beat it consistantly, regardless of wether or not they are havhing any fun playing the game itself, are usually doing so because of deep, deep emotional issues.

You know the types...some of YOU may fit the mold!

These are the same folks who would be into competitive rock-collecting, or competitive sand-eating....competetive anything!

Me, personally, I'm more interested in watching some dude wolf down 50 hot-dogs in 10 minutes than I am watching some guy master Street Fighter.

I'll agree though, playing a game hours on end just so you can beat little timmy down the block is pretty lame imho.

If you can master Ryu or Ken there are many other games you can step up to and just own.

I grew up with street fighter...

MKII was great fun too..

But when I got hooked on Tekken 3, and later, Tekken Tag... I can tell you I've yet to find another fighting game I've enjoyed (and still enjoy) so much. Purely for it depth, mind games, mixups, and different player styles that can all come out of the one character.

Infact, I bought the JAMMA gameboard and a cabinet just for Tekken Tag.

It takes many many hours to learn properly... helps to have alot competition as well (which is rare these days).... downloading korean vid to see what heights they have taken the game to is also a good education tool.

Hopefully the new Zinc and Kaillera will let Tekken Tag relive the glory days....

I know my fingers are crossed for it.
