Capped my U5000 now it doesn't work
« on: September 26, 2009, 08:55:17 pm »
OK, I have a U5000. It used to work, it was really light on one side, so I decided to cap it.  After the cap kit, I hook it back up, and turn it on, and I get no picture.  There is a glow from in the neck of the glass.  No picture though, its complettey black, doesn't look like it turns on at all from the front.  What could it be.  I pulled the boards back off and checked my work, all the caps are i nthe right polarity and I don't see any places where solder joints touch that shouldn't.  Did I f' something up???   I'm pretty pissed right now.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You double checked the right caps were put in the right places? Excess leads cut off? Checked for bad solder joints besides just on the caps you replaced?

All connectors plugged back in? Remote adjustment board plugged in? Yoke connectors plugged in? And in the correct spots? Ground wires reconnected to neck board? You didn't accidently mash down any other component leads that could now be touching adjacent component leads that shouldn't be touching?

I did check all of the solder joints.  I looked through and check to make sure nothing was touching that shouldn't, i don't recall smashing any down so it touches.  I looked and I can't see any of that either.  Obviously I'm missing something.  All the connectors are plugged back in as well.  Is there a way to check the caps to see if maybe there was a bad one or two in the bunch?  Is there any other way to trouble shoot?

Do you get raster if you turn the screen voltage up?

Sorry, I'm new to this whole thing, so I don't know what raster is, or really how to turn up the voltage.  Now don't flame me though for doing a cap kit, I have a lot of experience with soldering and a good amount of experience with pc boards.  It didn't seem to be such a hard thing to do a cap kit, as long as I was cautious and stuff.  thanks for the help.

There is a potentiometer (knob) on the flyback itself labeled SCREEN.
Turn it up and see if the screen turns bright.

Make certain the video cable is connected back properly, without it you won't have a picture either.

I adjusted that knob and it didn't change anything.  Looks like the monitor is getting no power if you look at it from the front.  If you look at the back though, you see the orange glow in the neck though.

Is there a slight ticking?

The B+ may need adjusting.  The fact that the heater is on is a good thing though.

IT WORKS!!  I took out the boards again, went through all the solder points etc, resoldered a couple of spots and put it back in and it works beautifully!  I don't think the problem was the solder joints at all, I really think it was the suction cup that hooks into the back of the glass.  I don't think the first time it was completley in there snug.  Second time around I felt it really clip in.  Either way, it works and I am one happy dude.  Now I just have to fix the hard drive problem.

Glad you got it going..... U5000's can be a bear.

I really think it was the suction cup that hooks into the back of the glass.  I don't think the first time it was completley in there snug.  Second time around I felt it really clip in.

Can't tell you what it was that fixed it, but I CAN tell you it most likely wasn't that.
You'd have had a heck of a fireworks show.

OK, I stand corrected.  That makes sense, I guess it was one of the solder points I fixed.  Thanks evryone for all the help though.
