N64 ROMS....which to use
« on: January 08, 2010, 10:53:27 pm »
I'm in the process of FINALLY turning my XBOX into the XBOX I always wanted.
All the emulators I could think of with full &/or custom ROM sets (depending on size).
A whole slew of games, MAME, and MUGEN, just to name of few of the token gems I'd like installed.
For N64 I decided to go with a custom ROM set of the select few favorites I had.
I just dont know which version of the ROM I should be using, any help ?
For example some ROMS end if V64, others Z64, some even N64. Most have the (U) which I assume is for U.S version ?
And then you have (!) and [!]
I dont know if they all work, if it doesnt matter, or should I be looking for something specific ?
I ended up installing multiple ROMS for various titles, but obviously I would like to clean this up, I dont need two WWF Wrestlemania for example.
(that for example ends in (U) (!) N64 and (U) [!] Z64

I'm confused help a NOOB out !

thanks

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

To my knowledge, those extensions should all work fine. There is a filename length limit on xbox of 38 characters plus the extension. The ! means that it's the proper rom and best known version of that rom that exists.

I'm just going thru my ROM folder and every ROM has the ! in some form or another, be it surrounded with () OR [].
I guess what I will do is keep the ROMs with the shortest name and delete the rest.
No need for duplicates ! I just need one working ROM for each select game.
thanks !

You could just rename any of the ones that are too long.
