Mame vs games
« on: June 29, 2009, 05:03:08 pm »
Can you guys recommend good versus games? Excluding fighting games.
some I can think of:
hyper sports, hyper olympics
warlords (it's mixed bag with this one)
tetris
dyna blaster/bomber man
some of the light gun games, like point blank
rampart
a lot of puzzle games, but those I see them as more indirect versus games.
I really can't think of too many.
Maybe a link to an already compiled list of all vs games?

Joust
Original Mario Bros.

Technically those are cooperative games, but I've never seen them played that way.

  • Yeah, owning a MAME cab only leads to owning real ones. MAME just isn't good enough. It's a gateway drug.

There was some good co-op game suggestions recently in a thread [here] I'm sure you'll find some good ones in there.

They may not all be directly vs but you can alwasy go vs on the score count :)

I should be a little more specific I'm looking for games that are more action oriented, like bomberman. "Hot seat" vs is not gonna do it. Joust probably could be a good choice though.

I am aware of that other thread, and I'm pretty sure all the games suggested there were co op, and score count vs, just will not cut it.

The term you are really looking for is "head-to-head" rather than "vs."

The simplest answer is obviously fighting games and sports games - a million footy games, top semi-serious sports games like NBA Jam and others. If however these are not your cup of tea, try some racers like Out-Runners etc.

2 on 2 Open Ice Challenge is another great competitive game. It's very fast paced and supports up to four players.

And have you considered Pong?

Not been in MAME for a long time, however there is Plasma Pong which I'm gonna revive right here that I first found out about when I joined here years ago...

I don't know if you can call bomberman a "head to head" game. Bomberman would be a template of what I'm looking for. Fast paced action, against each other.
But I wouldn't say no to games like toobin. Something different.

As to pong. I would love that plasma pong, but something tells me that it does not have settings for 2 spinners. It probably is just a pc game for keyboard.

My favorites are:
Baseballs stars 2
NBA jam series
windjammers
puzzle fighter II

I'd be interested in hearing some more as well!

Might not sound like an accurate description, but it's basically short for 'a competitive simultaneous multi-player game', whatever the layout of the game.

Hell, I thought the title of this thread meant you were wondering about Mame versus games - like, game boards. I would've title it something like, 'can you recommend some VS. games?' .
