How do I get sound in Arcade OS?
« on: May 18, 2009, 11:28:46 pm »
I just got bought a few arcade machines and one of them is a MAME.

The guy I bought it from said it wasn't working, but I got it to work but with no sounds in Arcade OS or when a game is running.

This has a soundblaster 16, AVGA card and JPAC  windows 98. I think the arcade monitor is a HAPP.

I can't get to windows on this, when i power it up i have to hit the f8 key because it has some sort of boot virus :dizzy:

I will take some pics soon and post them of the inside.

I think I need to adjust the resolution in windows also because every game flickers real bad, even when i try to get the native res for the game in arcade os.

any thoughts?

thanks.
-Dustin

Can you get sounds from within windows?  Like the startup and shutdown sounds?  If so, then you're at least on the road to getting it to work in arcadeOS.

That said, I strongly suggest taking this machine and gutting it.  Upgrade the motherboard a bit, keep the AVGA and JPAC, install XP and run Mala (or other easier to work with front end).  Having to press F8 just to get into windows certainly won't do for a finished cabinet, so you've got to do *something* with it anyway.  Just nuke it and start over.  $0.02

Um, that sounds right, in that windows is shelfed, it's working in dos, and ArcadeOS is the shell.

I can't get to a windows desktop.
once I hit f8 key after Bios , it informs me about a boot virus.
I hit the "c"key then ''Y"key and next is enter.
this gives me the option to boot as normal.
Once I hit enter, I see the windows logo, this takes up almost all of the screen with the bottom half of the logo cropped off.
This takes just a few seconds to load(no sounds from the speakers)Now I get right into arcade os.

How do I get to windows from arcade os?

And no, I can't get any sounds at all, just some static from the speakers once a game starts to load up.

Thanks.

ArcadeOS is meant to be run with DOS or W98.   It had problems with newer sound cards that did not have DOS or W98 drivers.   Simple soundblaster cards were the most often used and drivers for DOS/W98 are still available. You should get freedos or an old copy of PCdos or an old W98 and do a clean up and reinstall.   ArcadeOS is available on the PC2jamma link over at mameworld.

If you want anything newer to run in MAME then gut the unit and put in a newer MB and run windows xp with  newer version of mame.   If you still remember how to use dos and W98 then have at her.

ArcadeOS is meant to be used with DOS /only/.  There are focus problems when trying to use it in Windows.

You need to get into the autoexec.bat and config.sys files and see what's going on.  If you don't have experience working in DOS this could be a problem for you.
