The Iceman retires.
« on: April 19, 2009, 11:00:53 am »
im not sure how many of you guys are into mma, but chuck lidell has retired.  It was more like he was knocked out into retirement by shogun rua.  Too bad, he was one hell of a fighter but he just dont got it no more.

I thought he was winning the fight.  until he got knocked down.  He can't take shots like he used to.

Am I the only one that noticed round 4 of the Silva / Leites fight ended 10 seconds early? Instead of making the "clap clap clap" sound, it ended.

icon of MMA without the last name gracie? for shame.

chuck was the guy us rednecks wanted to win, despite the kanji tat on his noggin. He seemed like the kinda guy you'd wanna have a beer with, and if anyone started a fight, he'd finish it for you.

Now rampage jackson... I wouldnt wanna go drinkin with him, he cant drive drunk for ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---!

They were off on that all night, at least that little clock on the screen was.  That was the worst example but they kept sounding the ten second warning at 13 seconds or more.  One early fight they did it near 20 and the guys were all confused when the round didn't end when they thought it should.

Gracie beat up on non-trained weekend warriors. Strike that, because he didn't beat them up. He just broke their arm. You throw Joyce Gracie in a time machine and bring him to current day. He would just be another face in the crowd. Even then when he went over to Japan to fight real fighters, he had lots of problems with them.

That's not exactly true.  He beat up on karate teachers, pro boxers, a Savate world champion, a European Judo champion, Ken Shamrock (catch wrestling champion).  That's not a list of weekend warriors. It's a list of highly trained guys who had never had to defend ground submissions.  It was the catch wrestlers in Japan who were able to hang with Gracie - another ground submission art.  It is mostly true that the first few UFC lineups were tailored for guys who would be vulnerable to Gracie but it's not true that they were nontrained weekend warriors.

EDIT:  I phrased part of that badly... clearly Shamrock isn't on the list of guys who couldn't defend submissions.

back in the early days of mma alot of fighters had no idea about submission fighting like catch wrestling and jiu-jitstu, so the gracies had there way fighting guys who had no idea how to fight.  I belive thats why they introduced the ufc, to show the world what brazilian jiu-jitsu can do.

thats a bit much, and please dont have me on the same side as Chad......
that being said, a 40 yr old Gracie held his own for a while against Forrest. I think my point was, once gracie did what he did other fighters had to learn new stuff and anyone who gets into the octagon with NO jujitsu/submission training doesn't last very long.

I dont care how "set up the first 2 UFCs were" fighting 4 or 5 people in 1 night couldnt have been easy, especially that giant ---fudgesicle--- of a Hawaiian in UFC2

Could have been this Iceman:

I was  a fan of his when he teamed with the Von Erichs.

Wow, I thought Iceman was dead. All but one of the Von Erichs are.

Huh? The Iceman's been retired since the 80s. He basically defined the shooting guard position as we know it today.
Old, but not obsolete.
