Deluxe Space Invaders cocktail color screen overlay help
« on: June 16, 2009, 05:29:04 pm »
I think this technically falls into an artwork category. . .

I have tried searching both on Google and this site, and I can't seem to find any info about this specifically.  I picked up a working Deluxe Space Invaders cocktail in stellar condition for it's age, and at an awesome price!  Anywho, the color monitor overlay has some of the color melted off directly in the center of the monitor, and this actually interferes with gameplay.  I am wanting to restore this to it's original state, but I can't seem to find anyone who knows of a way or has a reproduction of this translucent.

I tried to buff out the burn, but it didn't help at all, and I actually made it worse with some other attempts to try and remedy the problem.  Is there anyone out there that either has one to sell, knows a way to reproduce it, or knows of a place that I can buy it from, that would be greatly appreciated.

I already replaced the glass top and glass clips, I have the artwork on order, and hopefully will have it soon.  There is some very minor repair of the cabinet needed, and some touch up paint, new t-molding, and cleaning up the coin box.  This bad boy will be ready to go in no time!

Thanks in advance for any help on this.

This is what I am talking about.

That's a toughie. The only thing I can think of is to scan the overlay, probably by using the same technique used for copying transparencies, touch up the damaged areas (or have someone here do it), and well... that's where I am at a loss. I really can't think of any place that can print up a shaded transparent color overlay. Kinko's perhaps? Every printed color transparency I've ever seen always used solid primary colors. I've never seen shades or gradients or anything like that so I don't know if you'll ever be able to color match it. :-\

I called Kinkos, er um FedEx Office, and they can do a transparency for $1.99 but only in standard paper size, and I need 13 X 16 or about that.  I didn't ask about gradient printing though.

I am thinking that since it is on the solid yellow are that needs repair, that I could have them print up a sheet and I will have to do some cutting to repair the damaged area, and splice it in that way.  This wouldn't work if I kept my clear glass top as is, but I will replace the smoked plexi that was over the screen on the original that got heavily scratched as well.  This should mask out the cuts themselves, we'll see.  It's not a huge deal, I don't mind the B & W, I just know that it is more authentic since it is the deluxe and not standard table.

That and my lil' girls like the color part better. . .

On that note, my 4 year old can almost clear the entire first board, it brings a tear of joy to my eye watching her play the game.  My almost 3 year old doesn't seem to understand that you can move your base, so she just fires while sitting in one spot.  Still not bad for only technically a 2 year old.

Before cutting & splicing the transparency I would suggest scanning the artwork, even in its damaged state. Even if there isn't any resource available for reproducing a transparency of this size now, that doesn't mean there wouldn't be in the future. It'll be a worthwhile half hour of your time to go through the effort. That's up to you though.

In any case, what about signage? Didn't the Ms Pac-Man repro guy use some kind of transparent material for this masks? I think he had his printed up using a sign printer. I'm not sure about that though.

I think I can get a good scan from a friend of mine.  Mine is not only a high quality one like his, but also it is too small to fit the whole page on.  I'll post what I have when I get around to it.  Life is very busy right now, leaves little time for fun unfortunately.

Sorry it took me so long to get to you about this, but yes, that is the same pattern.  That is exactly what I need to replace.

It is the Midway Cocktail version that I have, so I don't know if the Tatio one is the same.  And the outer edge is 16" by 13 1/4".  The colors start in about 1/8" in from that edge.
