Best Primer
« on: April 02, 2009, 09:47:26 pm »
I'm going to sand a DK cab down to the wood. What is the best primer to use? Spray Can? Oil based primer applied with a foam roller? Should I apply 2 coats of primer and sand between coats? Im looking to get the best finish possible.

I'm going to be doing the exact same thing tomorrow (sanding and painting a DK).  I am going to be using bondo to fill the holes/dings and then sanding it smooth with 100 grit followed by some 220 grit.  I will be using Zinsser BIN primer and applying 2 (or more) coats with a 4" foam roller and sanding with 220 grit and then 400 grit in between coats.  I'm not sure about the top coat yet but that should keep me busy this weekend.  I will NOT be sanding all the way down to the bare wood.  I will be smoothing out the bondo layer just enough so the primer will lay flat.  I don't think going all the way to the wood is necessary for something like this.

I don't know what you mean by "best finish" though - I mean there are a ton of ways you can go.  Check out mayhem's project thread for some craziness.  I put a pink "piano" finish on one of my cabs - it looks GREAT but I'm not sure I ever want to go through that again.  It's up to you and how much effort you are willing to put in.

Take some pics when you get going - even the ones that seem boring because you are just painting and sanding are helpful.

Well, best would be from an HVLP spray setup, but I'm assuming you don't have one.

Foam roller with Kilz that matches your intended paint should be fine.  Two coats, sand after each one.  Unless you're going for a piano finish like javeryh mentions a good sanding down to around 400 grit works between coats until the finish.
