Flickering laptop LCD... sort of.
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:10:17 pm »
It's not exactly flickering per se. I really don't know how to describe this. The problem manifested itself about two or three days ago.

I noticed it while playing movies on my laptop with VLC 0.9.6 on the 2nd monitor. Not something I regularly do.

During the movie there's a sort of sudden shift, or blitz, that occurs. At first, I thought this was corruption within the movie file. After the movie, I was doing some work and the blitz occurred on the first monitor. While writing this post, it occurred no less than six times... make that seven.

It's bizarre really. It happens for a mere split second. It's almost like the image shifts (make that eight) or splits in some fashion. Almost like the old days of trying to watch pay-per-view (9) porn without paying for it and without the static. Or maybe it's more like a superimposition over the screen. Oh wait, a better example (10) would be like the movie fight club where single frames of alternate images are inserted into the film. Yeah, that's what it's like. Like I said, it's hard to describe really. (11) It happens enough to be rather distracting while watching a movie or working.

The directional shift seems to relatively random as well. Sometimes a horizontal shift other times a vertical (12) shift. Once I got a glimpse of someones avatar in the lower right, (13) making the shift a diagonal shift.

Has anybody ever heard of this and know what's going on??? (14) Like that damn paperclip, I just can't make it stop.

(15) Tried Googling for it, but I don't know the magic Google-Fu words to use for something like this.

Dell E1705 w/ ATI X1400
WinXP SP2

Sounds like an overheating GFX card in the notebook.

BASS!

Yeah I would take that puppy apart, make sure that your graphics card fan is working, and free of dust. I would also pull the top of the chasis to check the lcd video cable as it could either be getting bent or is just worn out.  Remember that the video cable gets bent every time you open or close your computer.
