I'm an idiot, smoked my monitor
« on: March 09, 2009, 04:35:06 pm »
So my 13" WG monitor was working alright except that the picture was really dim and had lots of color smear when you turn up the gain.  So I replaced some parts and put it back together exactly the way it was before.  Well I noticed that a red wire (not the anode) with connector was attached to the flyback and wasn't plugged in before so I looked to see where it might go.  Well there was a single pole on the neckboard labelled V, and I figured that it might be the right spot.  Well after turning it on, I saw smoke coming from the monitor and quickly shut it down.  After removing the wire and powering it back up, I get just a thin horizontal line.  My first guess is that I sent 10k volts to the vertical deflection circuit and killed it.  I looked all over the board and couldn't find anything that looked blackened so I'm not really sure.  Any thoughts?  Also is there any danger I could now be release x-rays or am I safe to use my multimeter on it while the monitor is running?

Thanks,
Scott

Even more confusing now, I checked my other k7000 chassis (19" not 13") and that red lead from the flyback is connected to the V pole on the neckboard.  So not sure why it worked without it hooked up and now after connecting it, I fry something.  Maybe it is something completely unrelated or maybe the 13" flyback is different than the 19" flyback.

I only swapped out 3 transistors and I know I put them back correctly.  Maybe the 13" flyback doesn't use that red lead?

worked before, don't work now=something must be either in the wrong place or missing an insulation sheet or a blob of solder across some track
just trying to look at this logically
