Act Labs Dual Light Gun Problem
« on: February 02, 2009, 11:23:57 pm »
Hello everyone-
I have two light guns from act labs hooked up to my PC.  They were both working for a while but now they've stopped.   I know how to calibrate them and all that, but theres a problem, I think, with how my PC is recognizes the devices.   I try to map the X and Y coords for each gun and both devices show up as part Gun 1 in the config window.   It's hard to explain so I attached a picture to this post.

So I calibrate the first gun and it says :
X:    Gun 1 X Gun 3 X
Y:    Gun 1 Y Gun 3 Y

Then I calibrate the second gun and it says
X:     Gun 1 X Gun 2 X
Y:     Gun 1 Y Gun 2 Y

So for some reason its almost as if my pc or mame is recognizing them BOTH as Gun 1 but ALSO as the correct "gun 2" and "gun 3".

Anyone have any ideas why that might happen or how to fix it?   I've tried to reboot the pc, and I've tried to unplug and replug in all the USB's, but those didn't help.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

 Have Act labs guns myself...
sounds to me like you have 1 or both switches in the wrong position.

however that don't work might try swapping everything around
1 at a time.

though what your describing does sound like a switch in the wrong
position... ;)

Open the config file of the game you are remapping keys (.\cfg\<romname>.cfg) and delete Gun 1 X and Gun 1 Y entries. so where you have this:

Gun 1 X or Gun 2 X
Gun 1 Y or Gun 2 Y
Gun 1 X or Gun 3 X
Gun 1 Y or Gun 3 Y

you must have this:

Gun 2 X
Gun 2 Y
Gun 3 X
Gun 3 Y

I agree with Cananas.

Another thing though.  You button gun numbers don't match the gun axis numbers for player 2 (gun 4 vs gun 2).  (I'm assuming you remapped both axis and button at same session.)  So... make sure both guns are set to player 1, and -dual_lightgun is disabled in mame.

Out of curiosity, did you upgrade recently from an older version of mame?  I've had this exact same problem for well over a year, and have not been able to upgrade mame over version 110. i believe is what i'm at.  older version works fine.. newer version does this very same thing you described.

No, I did not recently upgrade from an older mame at all.   I've been at 127, I believe, since I started.

On a side note, opening the cfg file and deleting the extra Gun 1 from the beginnings did work.   I'm still confused as to why mame thinks that both guns are Gun 1, but if I hack the cfg file it works, just not very convenient.  Nonetheless, it works!

Thanks!

You aren't pausing the game when remapping are you?
(That used to cause a bigger issue, but they fixed that.  I won't be surprised if pausing still causes issues, though.)

Thats an interesting question.   I think with some games I had been pausing and others not.   I'll have to test it out and see what happens when it's unpaused.   Thanks for the tip.
