Local Auction Find

Evidently the local pool hall / arcade went out of business (they actually moved from the mall about a year ago,  evidently to some strip mall were they failed miserably).  Anyway,  the bank who owned many of the machines put on an auction on Friday.

Stuff went CHEAP... there was no real classics at all (a broken Buster Bros that went for about $80 was the closest thing to a classic)... but some good deals.

I ended up with these:



...with topper that is still sitting in my truck.

Both machines worked on Thursday when I went to check out the games... but one side was dead Friday morning....I am guessing power supply.

$185.00 each + 10% auction fee & tax... $430.00 out the door for both (with topper).

Medium res 25" monitors too...and analog sticks!

Other great deals that were had:

Point Blank 2 in a dedicated cab with awesome artwork: $330 or so I think it was.

Letal Enforcers 2: I think it went for arount $175.

Sega GT huge-ass full moving cockpit thing....2 went for $175 each!!

Sega Bass Fisher (50" screen): $225.00 I think it was.

Surprisingly a small COIN CHANGER went for $1,250?!?   A Big Buck Hunter Pro went for over $2,200... and a House of the Dead 2 went for about $500 i think it was.

The local mall has a set of those. Never played them, neither of them have sound and one side is not on half the time. I thought they always looked neat though.

Yeah, and I've never understood how you can dent a wood cabinet like that...

It's a good graphic design.  You can beat them to hell and they still look good.

Hell yeah... these cabs are in 9.5/10 condition as they are,  but even the flaws are very difficult to detect with the design...hell,  a couple actually add to the look.

Unfortunately there are STANDARD RES monitors in them...not MEDIUM RES as I thought.  K7401's....verified by the fact that the PCB is set to standard res.  Oh well... I'd rather have the medium res,  but frankly,  these standard res monitors are beautiful and if for some reason I decided to do something different with these cabs,  they certainly have more flexibility (a dedicated MAME flyer/stick cab comes to mind).

It's decently fun enough against the computer.  It looks like it will be a blast against another opponent deathmatch style.

Plenty of good news and a tiny bit of bad news. 

First the good news...

I was right about the issue being a power supply.  I swapped the power supply from the working cab to the non-working cab and it fired up.   So I go online and check and Bob Roberts has a 20a PS for $30.00.   The problem is I just ordered buttons from him and THAT order went out the DAY BEFORE.   Being that the original PS looked like a computer PS and the fact that computer power supplies run more than 20a in the 5v line I figured I shouldn't have a problem swapping an old AT style power supply in...

...after a little hacking I fired it up and it worked!

Nice.  I then noticed that this was the client cabinet as it went in to a "looking for server" loop.   After pulling out the network cables from both I realized the coupler that is mentioned in the manual is NOT included with these two cabs.  DAMN.  No big deal,  I'll go buy one.  After a trip to radio shack where they charged me $7.99 for a tiny piece of plastic essentially I had the coupler.  It didn't work.  >frown<.   What to do?  Well... the manual mentions using a hub if you have 3 or 4 cabs and I happened to have an old 4 port Netgear hub in a box in the garage.   After hooking it up... SUCCESS!  The client cab recognized the server cab and both games fired up.

Oh yeah...sometime around this time I noticed that the fan making all the noise from the original "working" cab was just the fan guard...it was loose.  NICE.

Things are going great except for one thing.  It appears one of the pots on the analog stick is going bad.   I can only get a limited range...not enough to properly configure and it ends up goign in circles unless you hold the stick about 5 degrees off from center.   I will definately be replacing the pot.

Nice find. I have never even heard of this game.

Sounds like you already have the server/client thing working, but just another thought on that... in the world of PC networks, to connect one PC directly to another you would need a cross-over cable. To connect them to a hub you would use a straight-through cable.

I'm not even sure if this is remotely related to what you have, but just thought I would throw it out there.

The local arcade has a dual WAR kit in a sitdown 2P Wingwar cabinet.

I also played this when it was new in the old Mall cinema - it was okay. Reminded me of DukeNukem 64 deathmatch.

Likely not keepers.  I'd sell one or both.  If I sell one I may convert the other to a dedicated analog "stick" MAME cab.  If I sold both,  well,  then that idea is out the door.  They were a great deal considering the monitors themselves (even standard res) are worth the price.
